the town of buena vista, maine has always been quaint, but decisively not small. full time residents took offense to the idea, as if it made them lesser. they were always proud not to have changed, to have kept their charm even when the popularity of walt disney university threatened to overtake them. while more and more people have relocated in the hopes of securing themselves the bright & beautiful future that the town promises its inhabitants, they mostly just find themselves assimilating to the small town life they once looked down upon.
everyone knows everything. how couldn't they, when they also know everyone ? surrounded by picturesque views, lofty thanks to the incredible status of wdu, their pride and joy, residents new and old always felt so beyond the dramas and grime of the big city. crime ? in their quaint town ? unheard of.
murder, however, may have become just a little less so. six days before the start of term, the body of professor maxwell m. mouser is found sprawled on the jagged rocks of foxtail bluff by an early morning dogwalker. the buena vista police department has never seen anything like it, but hypothesis that an accidental fall might have been what killed him - right up until a hand reaches into the inside pocket of his tweed jacket and reveals four words scrawled on heavy parchment paper, and a postmortem reveals the stab wound to his heart.
