upon first observation, he is a quiet figure, face all sharp angles and lines. happiest when left alone, he carries with him tranquility beyond his years. sharp brown eyes with a piercing gaze that catches on everything they land on. he has an inordinate amount of patience, rarely getting riled up except about those he cares for. an air of sagacity, he remains neutral on all topics, avoiding conflict at every turn, to the exclusion of all else. always polite, always willing to assist; but very rarely trusting.
get a bit closer and you realize that the lines soften into curves. the corners of his mouth turned up like barbed wire, defensively protecting the facade. that sharp gaze is just an observant stare, keeping an eye out for anything that may be dangerous. that serenity turns into nerves, anxiety bigger than one might expect. always making jokes, keeping a solid wall of humor between him and the person across from him. conversations feel like drowning; ready at any instant for things to go the wrong way. focused so intently on the talk that jokes posed to him lose all meaning. simply poised to run, his fight or flight long ago broken. only one option for him now.
for those that do manage to peel back the skin of his onion, the whole demeanor is altered. though socially inept he may be, he has a wealth of knowledge available to him at any given moment; not quite an eidetic memory but certainly a sharp one. talkative: things he’s learned from books or just from his unstable life, he could go on for hours and hours about random things. the humor is discarded, conversing much easier now that he feels he can talk freely. the anxiety is a defensive mechanism, dropped only when he feels comfortable—consider yourself lucky.
(if you have the audacity to take advantage of him when he’s at his most vulnerable, he will never forget it, and you will regret the day you chose to make that decision.)
when hwanji lived in seoul, he was much more excitable and social. necessity has forced him to pull a mask over that now, but when he was younger, he was quite popular. he would regularly roam his neighborhood, making conversation with anyone he could. as he grew older, he became more mischievous, often getting into trouble and hanging out with people that could be considered “rabble-rousers” or troublemakers. gambling, fighting—he did it all, and enjoyed every minute of it. rebellion was invigorating to him.
eventually, hwanji’s luck ran out. he ended up on the wrong side of one of the larger gangs in the neighborhood, landing himself in deep debt. being the type of person he was, he didn’t realize right away just how much of an issue this was. instead, he tried to avoid paying up, and managed to smooth-talk his way out of many a dangerous situation. unfortunately, that didn’t work for long; something hwanji wasn’t aware of was that one of the gang members was a werewolf. the boys ambushed him on the night of his 17th birthday, leaving him to die in an alleyway.
of course, he didn’t die. life couldn’t have been that simple.
After his turning, hwanji fled to jeju, seeking protection from those that still chased him. ever since, he’s lived a quiet life with the nam pack, trying to weather out the increasing tension between the packs. he dislikes talking about the war, and even more hates discussing the current standings around the island. he’s almost what you could call old-fashioned: he believes in the peace treaties that jeju was protected by, and is often frustrated when the other (especially the younger) people don’t understand it. he has never forgotten the dangers that await him back in seoul, and isn’t too keen to travel back any time soon. he’s no fool—he knows that a reckoning is coming between the two werewolf packs—but he doesn’t want to think about it nor deal with it.
he doesn’t offer up the information that he is a werewolf. if you noticed, then congratulations to you, and he doesn’t go out of his way to hide it. but if you don’t pick up on the telltale signs, he certainly isn’t going to be the one to inform you of them. and, what with the security of werewolves quickly declining thanks to the moves from the kang pack, he isn’t eager to change that habit.
