How different do you feel Mai would have been if she'd been a bender? - circusxfreak?

Interesting question c:  I’ll do my best to provide you with a good answer!

Well, Mai herself never felt any lesser for not being a bender. It clearly isn’t something that ever bothered her. Even her fighting skills weren’t picked up as a means of compensating for that, for she hardly felt like she lacked anything. Perhaps that is due to her own family not consisting of benders and being more focused in the more political aspects of their society than the martial ones. 

And different from Katara, for example, Mai wasn’t directly affected by war as a young girl. Mai had no enemies she intended to fight, didn’t feel the need to protect those closest to her (in battle, and at first). The Fire Nation had the upper hand in the war, and even if they didn’t I’m sure their propaganda would say otherwise, so Mai wouldn’t really have a reason to worry. Neither is she the sort of person that would commit herself to fighting for her country just due to some feeling of patriotism.

When we think of family influences, her family never actively sought to have a daughter skilled in battle, since this wasn’t the role they meant for her to play. If being a bender gave her some more status, they’d welcome it, certainly, but otherwise I doubt so. Much of how Mai is (the distance at which she keeps herself from others, her quietness and lack of passion towards things in general, her often acid and dark way of speaking among other things) was shaped by how she was raised. I don’t think that even if her being a bender was something they’d be proud of her parents would have changed the sort of behavior that lead her to grow up like that. Even if she was able to bend and that was considered great, they’d still want her to be quiet and well-behaved and mindful of her father’s political career. Maybe she would’ve resisted this more fiercely, though I doubt it. It wasn’t a lack of physical means to oppose her parents that led her to obey and subject herself to what they wanted, after all it wasn’t through physical abuse that they forced her to obey.

I think being a bender would’ve changed some things - such as her friendship with Azula maybe? - but that when we think about Mai’s personality as a whole, it wouldn’t be that much of a change in the end. She is much too calm and controlled and just overall chill in comparison to firebenders in general, so maybe if one thing was necessarily connected to the other, perhaps she wouldn’t be that chill and controlled anymore but I don’t really know. 

Basically, I think being a bender wouldn’t change her life enough that it would make her be very different of who she is as a nonbender.

If it meant so or if her words were sincere at all, Mai couldn’t quite tell (believed yes, but knew too little of Mina to be certain).

The poro snuggles her! Poro has missed! Happy poro noises.

   Mai, who is always rather selective with snuggles and closeness overall, doesn’t object this time. Truth be told, the poro is quite nice a companion; not too troublesome that it would bother her, cute enough that even she can’t deny it the affections they seem to enjoy so much. Mai looked at the happy poro with amusement, somewhat happy herself, and let it stay upon her lap, petting the soft fur most gently.

   Mai resists the urge to roll her eyes, expression remaining blank. Truth be told she has no personal grudge against former enemies, but neither is she seeking approval or forgiveness (would hardly seek to prove herself to them like Zuko had done; it wasn’t like Mai to do so). Purpose to be there was simple enough, yet so difficult to accomplish. It took her more than a second longer to speak, forcing herself not to simply leave, forcing words not to be too harsh. In the end, Mai decides not to address tone or words spoken, settling for saying at once what was to be said.

    “-----------To say you have my gratitude;” A pause. Bland as they were, words were meant most truthfully. Of course, reason as to why she was grateful would have to be explained, but situation was one all too uncomfortable for her to say everything at once. “In Omashu, one of you brought my brother back, for some reason I don’t understand; and don’t really care to know, either. I was told he simply appeared home, safe, as if he never left... and I know it could have been all very different.”
