#THEYWEREHERE: SHOWCASING ACTIVISTS OF YESTERDAY AND TODAY SHARE THIS TWEET THIS Pauli Murray 15 years before Rosa Parks’ arrest, New Yorker Pauli Murray rode a Virginia bus with her white friend and both were arrested for breaking segregation law. This incident inspired Murray to become active within the Worker’s Defense League and attend Howard Law School to become a civil rights lawyer. Her time at Howard awoke her to the sexist consequences of “Jim Crow” laws, coining the phrase “Jane Crow.” After graduating first in her class, Harvard denied Murray post-graduate work because of her gender. She became the first African-American to receive a Doctor of Juridical Science from Yale and became one of the country’s most prominent civil and women’s’ rights lawyers, and in 1977, became one of the Episcopalian Church’s first female priests. Thurgood Marshall called Murray’s book States’ Laws on Race and Color the “bible” of the Civil Rights Movement.

RS143_ZaatariHome2Outside_0 ORPHANAGES STRUGGLING TO HOUSE SYRIA’S WAR-TORN CHILDREN SHARE THIS TWEET THIS Most Syrian refugees are under 17, and many of them are orphaned because of the war. These children are facing ever-worsening shortages in care. “There are so many children that need our help. But we can’t take anymore,” said Nihad Abdi, herself a Syrian refugee. Abdi is director of Bayti (“home” in Arabic), an orphanage in Reyhanli, Turkey, which overlooks the Atmeh Refugee Camp on the Syrian side of the Syria-Turkey border. There are currently eight orphanages in Reyhanli, but Abdi claims that is not nearly enough. The children living at Bayti range from toddlers to young teens. All have lost their fathers and some have lost their mothers as well, said Abdi. Some of the mothers are still alive, but can’t afford to keep their children at home as they try to find work in and around Reyhanli. “Most of them can remember clearly how their fathers used to hug them and kissed them,” said Abdi. “And some of them remember how their fathers were killed in front of them.” One child watches a video on YouTube of the death of his father over and over again just so he can continue to remember him, Abdi said. Abdi said the children at Bayti were doing well, for the most part. But it hasn’t been easy. Even here, where they are nurtured and cared for in relative safety from the fighting in Syria, they struggle with the horrors they witnessed.
