Two weeks ago 700 people, organized by non-profit KRAKE, collected 2.7 tons of litter and other trash on the river banks of Rhine river in Cologne. It was part of a larger international day of action, the Rhine CleanUp Day, in which over 300 groups in almost all cities along the entire river participated and overall collected 320 tons of trash that now won't end up in the ocean.

"At first, the guys just took turns using brute force and tried to push my chair up that mountain," recounted Friesen. "It quickly became very evident that this wasn’t going to work, especially now that my wheelchair was hobbling on three tires. We were going to have to do this another way."

After struggling to push his wheelchair up the trail, Willy Peters came up with the idea to stick logs underneath the wheelchair and carry Aaron.

"We just wanted to see the waterfall, and Aaron goes wherever we go," said Peters.

"The chances of an older dog being adopted and leaving a shelter is not as great as for a puppy so we decided we wanted to help senior dogs," said Doreen Jakubcak, Founder of Marty's Place Senior Dog Sanctuary. At Marty's, each dog is given ample living space, human and canine companionship, consistent medical and dental care, as well as access to physically and mentally stimulating activities suited to their age and abilities.
