Dear Taylor, you're not the one who should be ashamed
To Taylor Swift and the rest of the world:
Taylor – can I call you that? – I hope this clusterfuck of name-calling and finger-jabs is not getting to you. You said your feelings were hurt and that – that, I fully understand. But don’t let it get to you. Because if there’s anyone this whole fiasco should be getting to, it’s Kim Kardashian.
Because you didn’t get famous by the luck of the interweb; you earned your fame by learning, writing, and performing music when most children’s greatest concerns were cardboard science fairs and cooties.
Because you didn’t get famous by the leakage of a tasteless sex tape; you earned your fame throughout the world by releasing your first album long before most children have mastered driving.
Because you don’t “make a living” with your big ass and painted face; you earn your every last penny by songwriting, singing, performing, touring, acting, smart product endorsement, etc.
Because you aren’t a millionaire by letting cameras ogle you on your couch and in the doctor’s office; you work your ass off.
Because you don’t post images and create emojis that set our gender back decades; you set a clean, hardworking, and modest role model for the millions of millions of girls who are watching you.
Because you aren’t nominated for awards based solely on your “hotness”; you have earned double-digit: Grammy Awards, Billboard Music Awards, American Music Awards, Country Music Association Awards, along with an Emmy award and several Guinness World Records – all of which are among (significantly numerous) other awards and broken records.
Because, months after hearing a comment that offends you, you don’t viciously attack someone more famous, revered, and decorated than you (though I’m not sure that such a person exists in your case); months after becoming the record-breaking second female artist to win a Grammy Award for Record of the Year, months after an acceptance speech wherein you motivate others, thank those who earned your thanks, and briefly revel in your well-deserved recognition, you have moved on with your life.
Because you don’t jump out and blatantly attack every person who has ever offended you; you handle only what absolutely needs to be handled and you do so succinctly and maturely, and let the bored world make of you what they will.
Just realize, Taylor, that you’re so damn famous that you’ve broken the internet – and this is not your virginal voyage at it. This time, you’ve done so with one little message, a message so little, unexplained, and unamended that the rest of the world is analyzing every last letter of it. All the rest of this nonsense has been a bloodbath spurted by countless others desperate to ride the coattails of your fame.
Sincerely,
Just another nobody whose last fifteen minutes is testament to your immense success in life.
