Google's Flu-Tracking Flub Proves We Don't Need Big Data for Everything

Image: James GathanyWikimedia Commons Big data and crowdsourcing were (and still are, if we can fix them) supposed to tell us sweeping things about our society. They're supposed to usher in an era where tweets can predict elections and mass protests, Facebook likes can predict a movieâs box office opening, and Google searches can predict where the next disease outbreak is going to be. The problem is that the results are often not any better than what we were already getting. Letâs take, for example, Google Flu Trends (mostly/entirely because it was just the subject of a major analysis in Science). The company uses its algorithm to correlate the frequency of search terms for very obvious things like âflu symptomsâ and slightly less obvious things like âRobitussinâ to predict where there is about to be a rash of flu cases. Futuristic thing tells the future! The only problem is that Google Flu has been extremely wrong for a very long time now. Last year, the trackerâs predicted flu prevalence were more than double the Centers for Disease Controlâs official numbers. Before that, the numbers were similarly disparate. In fact, Google Flu Tracker has overestimated for 100 of the 108 weeks starting from August, 2011, according to the Science analysis, by researchers at Northeastern University and Harvard University. To be fair, itâs not just Google. Political strategists have used tweets to predict enthusiasm for different political candidates, but the ease of gaming the systemâremember when Mitt Romney mysteriously got 141,000 Twitter followers in two daysârenders that data unreliable. âThe problems we identify are not limited to Google Flu Trends. Research on whether search or social media can predict x has become commonplace and is often put in sharp contrast with traditional methods and hypotheses,â lead author David Lazer argues. âWe are far from a place where they can supplant more traditional methods or theories.â Thatâs been true, so far. In fact, âlaggedâ CDC data, which has been available for many years, is a much more accurate predictor of flu outbreaks. Itâs unclear whether we even need a Google Flu Tracker, when traditional models are already working fine. âBecause a simple lagged model for flu prevalence will perform so well, there is little room for improvement on the CDC data for model projections,â Lazer writes. âIf you are 90 percent of the way there, at most, you can gain that last 10 percent.â And itâs hard to go that last 10 percent if you have no idea how the thing works. Science relies on transparency in order to be critiqued and improved upon, which is something that a private company like Google is highly unlikely to ever provide, because itâd allow imitators access to proprietary information. Image: Science âScience is a cumulative endeavor, and to stand on the shoulders of giants requires that scientists be able to continually assess work on which they are doing,â Lazer wrote. Google wonât tell us exactly which search terms itâs using, and one of the only scientific papers Google engineers have published on the subject was extremely vague. âThe few search terms offered in the papers do not seem to be strongly related with either GFT or the CDC data,â Lazer wrote. âWe surmise that the authors felt an unarticulated need to cloak the actual search terms identified.â In that paper, the authors say Google has various categories of relevant search terms, all of them related to either disease treatment, symptoms, or complications. Meanwhile, the CDC says that things such as school closures and high school basketball game cancelations are more accurate indicators of a flu outbreak. Itâs unclear if Google is taking search terms related to that into account. Big data isnât always going to be perfect, and eventually weâll settle into a system where we know when it works and when it doesnât. Right now, it appears like the Google Flu Tracker is a failing experiment that, while not necessarily doing harm, isnât necessarily doing what the company designed it to do, which is to save lives. These are the only search queries we know Google uses. Image: PLOS One âEarly detection of a disease outbreak can reduce the number of people affected,â Google says. âOur up-to-date influenza estimates may enable public health officials and health professionals to better respond to seasonal epidemics and pandemics.â Lazer says we have to get to a point where weâre using big data to complement what we already have, rather than using it as a cure-all. He calls it âbig data hubris,â which is the âimplicit assumption that big data are a substitute for, rather than a supplement to, traditional data collection and analysis.â With Google Flu Trends, it appears we have a classic case of that. It has been a noble experiment so far, but maybe itâs time to revamp itâand to take the results of other big data experiments with a healthy dose of skepticism. Scientists Recreated Jupiter's Moon Europa So They Don't Have to Go There

It inspires movies, crowdsourced long-term plans to visit it, and was singled out by President Obama for $15 million of NASAâs shrinking budget, in order to look for signs of life on the icy moon. Only problem is that NASA estimated that sending a spaceship to Europa would cost between $2 billion and $4.7 billion. So if we canât go to Jupiterâs moon, letâs just bring the moon here. Thatâs basically what researchers at Centro de AstrobiologĂa has done. The Spanish team simulated Europa-like conditions in a lab on outside of Madrid. They want to understand how Europaâs icy surfaceâone of the solar systemâs smoothest objectsâbecomes crisscrossed with reddish fissures, and see if the features could emerge from the ocean that scientists speculate is below Europaâs surface, made from water, salts, and gases. They reproduced the 300 bars of pressure and the low temperatures of around -4 degrees Celsius that characterize fluid reservoirs in Europaâs crust. If that seems fairly warm for something so far from the Sun (I think thatâs the temperature it was this morning on Earth when I rode my bike to work), remember that tidal flexing warms Europaâs core, which may allow for a liquid ocean, even as the surface of Europa is on average some 170 degrees below zero. The researchers then observed what happens to a solution of water, carbon dioxide, and magnesium sulfateâcompounds detected on Europaâs surface detected with spectrometryâif it were emerging from the core of Europa and cooling as it headed to the surface. "Just like Earth's magma emerges to the surface, a similar phenomenon could occur in Europa,â said says Victoria MuĂąoz Iglesias, one of the authors of the study, which was published in the journal Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta. âAlthough, in this case it would be a watery cryomagma that would evolve and emerge outwards from the interior of the icy moon." What resulted were processes similar to volcanism on Earth, but at temperatures below zero. Three types of minerals are formed depending of the fluid's evolution: ice, crystals trapping carbon dioxide, and very hydrated magnesium sulfates. As the different compounds cooled and crystallized, they revealed how Europaâs weird topography emergedâsometimes piling on the carbon dioxide crystals, sometimes the gas is released and piles collapse. Charged particles from Jupiter that bombard Europaâs surface are thought to produce the reddish, sulfurous compounds. Itâs more evidence supporting the hypothesis that under Europaâs still surface, there is water running. âCertain characteristics of Europa´s surface regarding its composition, morphology, and topography might be explained if a saline aqueous medium is involved, which has important consequences for living beings on Earth," said MuĂąoz-Iglesias. This Solar-Powered Toilet Torches Poop for Public Health

Image: University of Colorado For all the admirable efforts to solve the world's problemsâbeating malaria, improving education access, closing the digital divideâone simple need tends to fall by the wayside: We humans have to poop, and some 2.5 billion of us don't have the proper facilities to do so. Think about what that means for a second: Beyond the commodes themselves, roughly a third of the planet's population lacks sanitation, leaving communities susceptible to disease and filth. As Jack Sim, the founder of the World Toilet Organization, told me a couple years ago, a major part of the problem is that sanitation isn't a particularly glamorous cause, which has limited its exposure and support. It's telling that more people globally have cell phones than have proper toilets. "Why is a cell phone something someone will pay for when they won't pay for it in their house?" Karl Linden, a University of Colorado, Boulder environmental engineering professor, told me. "We need to think of sanitation as a business opportunity, and turn the toilet into a status symbol." Linden's team of engineers hopes to do just that. With funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation's Reinvent the Toilet challenge, the team has developed a toilet that uses concentrated solar power to scorch and disinfect human waste, turning feces into a useful byproduct called biochar. Fiber optic cables pipe hot sunlight into the toilet's reactor to burn poop. The goal is to build a self-contained block of toilets, similar to Coca-Cola's community blocks, that can also provide clean water and power for phone chargingâto essentially turn toilets into a community center. "I think it's hard to make sanitation as sexy as a cell phone, but by integrating into the community and making it a hub, it can be something more popular," Linden said. The toilet itself, called the Sol-Char, is a fascinating bit of engineering. In order to sanitize waste without the help of massive treatment facilities, Linden's team instead designed the toilet to scorch waste in a chamber heated by fiber optic cables that pipe in heat from solar collectors on the toilet's roof. "A solar concentrator has all this light focused in on one centimeter. It'd be fine if we could bring everyone's fecal waste up to that one point, like burning it with a magnifying glass," Linden said. "But that's not practical, so we were thinking of other ways to concentrate that light." As the bag Linden is holding reads, that's real poopchar in his hand, and it's totally sanitary to hold. Image: University of Colorado According to Linden, the key was figuring out how to get light to enter the fiber optic cables, which are currently about four meters long, at the right angle so it propagates evenly. Linden said that producing heat with the eight fiber optic bundles isn't hard, but packing them tightly without melting was a challenge that required a lot of direct work with materials manufacturers. The result is a high-efficiency feces-burning machine. "The transmission efficiency is really high, it's like 90 percent as you don't have many losses," Linden said. The end product is biochar, a sanitary charcoal material that is good for soils and agriculture. By converting solid waste to biochar (liquid waste is diverted elsewhere, as it's easier to deal with), the toilet thus allows for sanitary waste disposal without huge infrastructure investments. The project received $777,000 in initial funding from the Gates Foundation, with another $1 million in a second round. Currently, the team is in New Delhi for the second-annual Reinvent the Toilet Fair, an event hosted by the Gates Foundation and featuring the 16 teams in the toilet development challenge. Linden's team will present their working prototype, which has been in development for 18 months. The complete prototype in all its feces-torching glory. The next step is to build a system that's ready for plug-and-play use in the field, as well as decreasing costs. Linden said that they've already cut costs by 90 percent, and are looking to increase efficiency and decrease the length of their fiber bundles, which are a major cost in the design. "Our system right now is not field ready. It can operate, and all our technology can work in an integrated fashion, but we have to be there," he said. "The next phase of the research is to take what we're doing now and make it ready for the field." With continued development, Linden hopes his teams toilet can be delivered to communities to kickstart the conversation around sanitation investment. On its own, the community center model could provide a source of revenue to help maintain the system, while the end result is to increase awareness and demand for improved sanitation infrastructure. "You have to have a government that's interested in investing in the health of its people, and you have to have a community that's willing to invest not just their sweat equity, but their cash," Linden said. http://dlvr.it/58B7xZ
