*dragonflies flying*
C: Look it's grandma E and J! Hi grandma E and J!
L: Aww, that's so nice. They're flying away now though, see you later grandma E and J.
C: ...I wish grandma E was around longer.
L: Do you mean as a dragonfly or as a person?
C: As a person. She wasn't here for very long.
L: Yeah, it feels like she was leaving just as soon as you got here.
C: Yeah.
Happy father's day
to you, mom. The
one who stuck it
out through it all
even if you really
(really)
didn't want to. You
made enough mistakes
for the both of you
but at the very least
you eventually picked
us up from the
playground.
You were my tether to the world:
Literally speaking, for the 9 and a half
month gestation, my cord fed into yours
Then at times you held us too loosely with
your Invisible String - free reign to roam
within the walls you kept us caged in
And much too late tried to keep us on
a short leash made tighter and wound
around your fist. Now that your tether
is gone I feel anything but liberated.
It's been too long since
I last saw you
and your waxy flaking complexion
that the embalmer touched up;
colour matching your lips to
an old photo--
let us know how she would
have looked before--
and yet before you were
different and at one point you
were the one doing the painting. I
remember how proud you were
the first time you did a woman's
make-up, how you stayed up to
practice and you weren't sure if
any of it would work out in the end.
Now you've visited to trim
my husband's hair and I still
haven't seen your face. The bits
I do remember are melting
into the lamp I keep by my bed.
We'll come to visit you soon.

The Mango
There is a method to the cutting of the Mango— first, slice it twice down to the core just grazing the hard seed at the centre; second, cut a checkerboard before you invert the soft, sweet flesh that is currently exposed and ripe for the eating. Next, you place it in front of your child who is sprouting up before your eyes more quickly and more slowly than you could care for. She takes it between her fingers and a light comes on as she learns to gnash it between her gums. Satisfied, she leaves a sticky mess behind. And tomorrow, you take the mango to the lips of your mother who is falling asleep but rouses as she smells the familiar scent of her country. Delicately, tremulously she takes it in with the tip of her tongue, bite by bite, bravely swallowing the fruit, and for a moment you think she remembers something— anything—all the while the dysphagia is just another sign of the unlearning of a lifetime of things that she wanted to forget.
I used to be afraid of the dark.
Of the nameless, faceless things
that would visit in the night,
the same way my mother was
afraid of the being in her mirror
and had to drape a bedsheet over
her vanity.
Now she asks me to look for the
shadows and I am not afraid anymore.
She points them out to me as if it's
a discovery of the New World--
"Look Mama it's a shadow!"
"Where is it, love?"
Moving, flapping, a twiddling of the thumb
and what was darkness is now
a new creature that is alive.
The shadows remind me that there is light
peeking between the trees in the woodland;
there is still light at the end of the tunnel
(somehow, so many of you will have found it already and one day will tell me where to go)
and there is light--
there is light
in what was once that shady bit.
my husband
I never felt the need to write about You, my love— because you've heard it all and not because you are not the single-most important person to me but because you were (you are) the most uncomplicated, the least complicated of them all.
Wild Geese by Mary Oliver

Death is A letting go A slackening of the jaw A loosening of the fist An inability to hold onto your animosity any longer "...and when you die, you just breathe out— that's all it is. Death is to breathe one last time, to exhale."
