Today, HEPICAT, a new clothing line of radical Afrofuturist streetwear launched its official website. Hepicat is the creation of New Orleans based artist-educator Dane Verret, and it’s sooo much mo…
Heyyo! My clothing line, Hepicat got featured by international music & arts blog Ignite the Sound! Peep the story here. Spread the word!
Gola Glyph: Hepicat/Hipi
"One who stays woke."
"This Soul, Body, Mind is woke to the world."
Hepicat represents a conscious, active individual or community. In this sense, consciousness is an awareness of the individual/communities reality. This person is woke to their political/cultural/economic conditions but not broken by them.
Hepicat is an aware state of mind, that is not easily overwhelmed or broken.
Hepicat is a sharp state of mind, that brings a calm, levelheaded approach when taking action.
Hepicat is the Warrior's mentality.

Gola Glyph: Griot/Jeg-na/Jali The symbol has two interpretations: 1. This is a teacher dressed in the robes and mask of a mystic 2. This is the house of an oracle/teacher/guide projecting light from the top of a mountain. Griot symbolizes someone who leads you into a period of transformation and self-actualization. Griot represents the master educator, not the expert--so people who have mastered the act of teaching/mentoring/transferring knowledge. Pictured in the photo: A Scribe Called Quess, a young Griot from New Orleans, LA. Stay Woke. Learn more here: We Hepicat
Gola Glyph: 'Huru - "This presence liberates/The Big Spirit Liberates" Huru is The Big Spirit, your soul at its most vulnerable and generous--thus, free and iberated. Huru represents our transformation into culture warriors, who protect and promote community uplift. Huru represents a union between a liberating presence and creative mind. I decided to re-imagine maps through my own African aesthetic. This is one of the prints you could receive for Ssupporting Hepicat's start-up. I really want to make this company take flight. Pre-order your shirt or print here: http://www.gofundme.com/hepicat
In case you wanted some clues about where your story could begin.
What's the language on the Scroll? Gola, an Afro-Diasporic language that will express the proverbs and memory of African people in Louisiana. These are the symbols you see on Hepicat designs. The Gola Language is Afrofuturist: it proposes a new language for African-descended people to write in as an alternative to those of Europe. The Gola Language is Pan-African in its origin and genealogy. I'm creating this language to openly defy the violence of the many African slave trades, colonization, and Black miseducation in the diaspora. Where Black folk were once robbed of languages, we created our own. Patois, Creole, Jazz, Blues, Hip-Hop. Through Gola I'm building on that history. Stay Woke.
