What is Mass Media?

mass media, simply put, is a way of communicating to a mass audience. Traditionally, this meant one source communicating to many recipients, but it can also include communication between many sources and many recipients, especially in our modern day with the use of technology.

The first instance of mass media was the printing press. This new technology was primarily built to spread the bible to the masses. Since it was no longer necessary for someone to sit and manually write each word in order to make a copy of the bible, it became much easier to spread Christianity further than ever thought possible.

As technology evolved, so did mass media. Books and newspapers quickly grew to include film, radio, ad television, up to the point where there is so much mass media available to the average person, that audiences have become fragmented. 50 years ago, if you were lucky enough to have a TV, you could count the number of channels available to watch on one hand. But now with the popularity of this medium, there is a vast sea of selections to choose from when surfing channels. that is, if you still pay for cable. Streaming services bring this concept to a whole new level, allowing consumers to watch whatever they wish, whenever they want.

Deterministic theory

Marshall McLuhan was a Canadian philosopher who focused on media theory. He claimed the way we perceive and think is influenced by mass media. for McLuhan, this global interdependancy does not necessarily result in a peaceful co-existence.
