being an adult in the marvin trilogy fandom is so strange because i was 12 when i first discovered falsettos. part of me will always be that kid first discovering it. having grown up alongside such an amazing musical has been such a huge part of my life, i cannot imagine me without falsettos. i don’t think there is me without falsettos.

what a joy it was to see Falsettos at LSU tonight!! first of all the band on stage absolutely killed it, they were AMAZING. the cast were equally as talented, i was blown away the entire time.

the person who played jason’s mom saw me crying before the show began (i was so excited lol) and talked to me for a bit and was so nice! then after the show, she introduced me to them which was amazing!!! they were all so nice.

i am so so glad i had the chance to see it. if you live in the area, i HIGHLY recommend going to see it!!

one of my favorite things about off-broadway productions of falsettos is seeing how they handle staging whizzers grave. i’ve seen some beautiful staging.

one of my favorites is there are quilt pieces laying around the stage with famous people who lost their lives to aids, and they place a piece of the quilt with whizzers name on it. this is such a beautiful reference to queer history with the famous people who we lost AND the aids memorial quilts.

“i don’t know why, but he looks like marvin” might be the most devastating line of the musical.

truly hard to come up with the words to capture the impact william finn had on the world. for one, his memory will truly be a blessing for generations to come. to have a musical such as falsettos about queer life in the 80s, written during the aids epidemic is something that is so often overlooked, it is truly amazing that he had the strength to look at everything awful around him and turn it into something so beautiful.

through falsettos, the lives of the countless queer people lost to AIDS are not only memorialized, but their stories are honored, giving us a space to grieve the collective loss of life. he rarely receives the recognition he deserves for offering us that sanctuary, both for the people who lived through it and for those who were lucky to never get the chance to.

on a more personal note, i wouldn’t be the person i am today without his music, his works, his art. for the last five years of my life, his works have inspired me to create and live. may his memory forever be a blessing. and again, thank you william finn.
