A/N: Had this idea kinda following this little post I made, this was supposed to be more like headcanon/short paragraph but it turned out to be this thing. I also gave Chino a name, hope you enjoy.
I believe Chino didn't move alone to New York, probably with his mom, he knew the first thing he had to was to look for a job since he technically was the man of the house.
He had no experience on anything really, but he was a smart kid, good with numbers, however, most of the jobs on the Puerto Rican neighborhood weren't exactly office jobs and he knew little to no English at the time.
One day he took a chance, some place in New York had to take him in and he had to learn English and he knew he wouldn't learn if he spent all his time with his people.
On his way back home he got lost, he didn't understand the subway maps and he didn't remember which line he took to get there in the first place, to his luck another Puerto Rican boy was going to take the subway that day.
Bernardo had spent more time in New York than Chino and by this point he was no expert in English but he had a certain level of it and while he never really left San Juan Hill, this time he had to run some errands on the other side of the city.
Bernardo saw the look in his eyes, he was lost and alone just like he was on his way to New York before he found Quique and Braulio who took him in.
"Hey tú! A ti, ¿que te pasa?" Bernardo exclaimed earning Chino's attention.
"I don't-" Chino began "no sé usar el metro"
"Come with me" Chino understood what that meant so he followed this guy around.
Once they got on the subway Bernardo kept looking at him.
"I've seen you around" Bernardo told him.
"Mhm"
"Te he visto por ahí" Bernardo repeated in Spanish this time assuming he didn't understand at first "looking for a job"
"Mi mamá y yo" Chino answered "estamos solos por ahora"
"But you never apply to jobs" Bernardo told him.
"I'm not qualified" Chino said "prefiero trabajo de oficina"
"No encontrarás eso en San Juan Hill buddy-boy" he had picked up some phrases and words from the other neighborhoods he had to visit.
"I know" Chino replied "necesito aprender inglés, quiero estudiar también"
It was time to get out of the subway, they were back in San Juan Hill and he still followed Bernardo around, it was at this moment that he realized that they didn't know each other's name yet.
"Go to Doc's" Bernardo told him "the owner, Valentina, te ayudará in what you need"
"Gracias, si yo puedo hacer algo-" Chino shyly said.
"None of that" Bernardo cut him off "estás en Nueva York now go for your dreams"
Chino smiled "My name is Carlos, la gente me dice Chino."
"Well Chino, soy Bernardo" he said "si necesitas algo mis amigos y yo también podemos ayudarte"
From that day Bernardo and Chino became friends, Chino often went to him and the Sharks when he needed something. He hope that his friendship with Bernardo would last forever.
