If you’d be so kind, would you mind sharing some tips? I adore gardening.
Sadly, it’s heading into autumn here, and I’m being kicked out of my house. So half the work I did on my garden is gone. (Thankfully the rest is in pots so I can take them with me).
But, fingers crossed, if things go alright, I might be able to maybe own a house before next spring. Then I’d be able to put my plants in the ground and really get everything going and thriving.
That sounds really intense! Hopefully you’ll have roots planted soon!
I just returned this book to the library, so I can’t go into nitty-gritty details, but what I took from this book specifically were the garden structures.
Tips include:
Supplementing soil with logs underneath that can slowly decompose over time
Straw! Straw is good at suppressing weeds
The garden refuse can be fresh, but only after you cover it with dry refuse (like dead leaves)
The styles of garden include A Mound Of Dirt On Top of Logs, a Box with a Composting Keyhole, and a Regular Box Full Of Dirt.
A lot of the information was really above my level, but I attached pics of my notes of the little amount that my brain retained. 🪴

I saw a book on living from nature recommended on youtube, so I dug around to see if I could find a pdf. And I did! The book is called ‘Back to Basics’.
I’ve been gobbling it up and it’s incredible. I’m only at the start, but it tells you in detail, all about buying the land, how to tell if the land is what you need, how to build a home from scratch, even to know to cut your own lumber by hand! It’s incredibly encouraging, reminding you that people did this for thousands of years, these are timeless skills, and you can do it too. I’ve only read 60 pages and I already know more about construction than I ever did.
The book also covers getting energy from Wood, Water, Wind and Sun, Growing your own food, Food Preservation, Skills and Crafts for Homestead, Recreation at home and in the Wild. You will likely see me gush about new info I try out from it because I can already tell this will be crazy useful.
Oh and did I mention? It’s written by a woman. Here’s a pdf and be blessed.
Honestly, do this. No matter how small your patch of lawn is, let it grow. Let wild plants grow on it. There are things you can do if you prefer it would become a flowering meadow and pollinators will prefer this, too. But no one will prefer a mowed lawn, except some dude selling lawn mowers. It's just wasteland, ecologically.
You patch might be tiny, but if every lawn would be transformed into a place for local wildlife, it would make a huge difference. Show the way. Be an example.

So glad my local womyn’s land is still lush and green this August. We had a lovely campout last weekend.
I...tried to make a meme and got carried away and made A Thing that is like partially unfinished because i spent like 3 hours on it and then got tired.
I think this is mostly scientifically accurate but truth be told, there seems to be relatively little research on succession in regards to lawns specifically (as opposed to like, pastures). I am not exaggerating how bad they are for biodiversity though—recent research has referred to them as "ecological deserts."

there are countless studies on the salutary effects of being outside but they’re typically so, like, productivity-oriented. they’re about how students perform better after being outside, or how fitness-pursuers get more benefits from their workouts outside, etc., which is of course what gets research funding. it’s not lucrative to talk about just being outside, literally just being, sitting, breathing, taking it in. but we can extrapolate from all the data on how “productive” pursuits are enhanced by nature and the outdoors, and say that being outside in itself confers benefits to the mind and body, and no doubt there are a few studies out there which have tried to document this
