“If someone offered you a pill that would make you permanently happy, you would be well advised to run fast and run far. Emotion is a compass that tells us what to do, and a compass that perpetually stuck on north is worthless.”
— Daniel Gilbert
ten years from now, make sure you can say that you chose your life, you didn’t settle for it.
Watch: In another clip, Sanders explains the real reason he got into politics.
“Many women, I think, resist feminism because it is an agony to be fully conscious of the brutal misogyny which permeates culture, society, and all personal relationships.”
— Andrea Dworkin, Our Blood: Prophecies and Discourses on Sexual Politics
“Goddammit, I miss believing in everything. Who wants a universe where things are what they are?”
— Andrea Gibson, “Baby Teeth in a Landfill”
“You can call yourself a pacifist when you stop beating the shit out of yourself.”
— Katie Higgins, “Hi, Hello, My Name Is…”
like, some stuff ends up bleeding over into normal situations. my father asks why i constantly check the thermometer; i obviously have a fever. but i think i’m faking it still. i tricked the device, although i’ve done nothing to alter it. i’m going to look down at it and read a normal, healthy temperature at any point now. i keep checking my grades. i always remember my gpa wrong. i always assume it’s about .3 lower than it actually is. i stare at the stable triangle mass of “A”s in a line, shuffling across pages of transcripts and i think: that’s a mistake. the classes were all easy, i think, even though i know many were not. the teachers just liked me. i’m going to fail out of my next degree, just watch me.
there must be some mistake. people like me are just lazy. we’re making excuses. we fake being “type A”. we fake success and survival and sicknesses, because everything at my core is just. fake.
i check the thermometer again. 101 F. there must be some mistake.
“Thank you for teaching me where I draw the line between what I can forgive and what I know I deserve.”
