Today I watched three more Youtube video tutorials for Java in the morning and it felt really great! I did a few easy problems on codewars as well.

Most of today I spent relaxing if I have to be honest. We watched the last two Harry Potter films, and I have a lot of comments on both, which I will not go into detail. Also, we had our first go at making mac’n’cheese bites, which did turn out pretty good in the end even though we ran out of breadcrumbs 3/4 through. Overall today was a good day!

Also, our chilli peppers are doing semi-ok, curently got a few leaf spots which I definitely disapprove of but hopefully they’ll recover soon!

Today I completed a chapter from my algorithms textbook as well as a few practice problems.

As I finished my handwriting worksheets, I was quite happy how it affected my handwriting. It is insane that now my lowercase letters look really decent (for the past few years I’ve been writing in all caps, but thought it would be good to improve my lowercase letters as for any code capitals make a rather bug difference.

I feel like I am getting to terms with not being extended productive every single day and that it’s not a failed day as I have at least completed something productive.

To be honest spending most of today on stationary websites feels like therapy at this point.

How To Code: Basic “Guess Number” Game, using Java.

There are a lot more efficient ways to this, which can be found on the internet. I wanted to try do one without looking stuff up.

Input/Output:

Enter a Number between 1 and 20: You have 5 guesses. 15 Too High. Enter a Number between 1 and 20: You have 4 guesses. 10 Too High. Enter a Number between 1 and 20: You have 3 guesses. 5 Too High. Enter a Number between 1 and 20: You have 2 guesses. 3 You Win. Play Again.

Edit: I just realized that the .nextInt() used with the random import includes 0. So the print statement should state, “Enter a number between 0 and 20″.

Today I did not listen to anything in specific.

I did not do any reading today but I did do about eight problems on codewars.com, which was quite the experience. Definitely a good mental exercise and good fun. It was my first time on the website and will not be my last.

Other than studying, I watched three Harry Potter films today, so there’s that.

It has been quite refreshing to do some Java for beginners practice for my algorithms and data structures class. I followed some quite informative Youtube videos which I highly recommend for anyone learning a proframming language.

I also managed to get my hands on all the JetBrains IDEs (ingegrated development environments) and browser extensions, as you get them free when you’re in education, as well as Sublime text and Eclipse (both are free, with donations which I will definitely make use of.

We also went on a walk through the footpaths around the village and we even made a horse friend going through a field! Of course, I still forgot that my phone has a camera and I should use it but I have high hopes for tomorrow. 😅

Today I got around to finishing the chapter I was working on yesterday. I also almost forgot doing my handwriting worksheet.

Today we did a lot of gardening and it felt really nice to see some progress. Unfortunately I haven’t really been documenting much of my progress as I’ve had loads to do but I hope over the weekend I take some more photos.

I did not do as much as I wanted to today, but overall I managed a subchapter with practice exercises and handwriting worksheet.

On another hand, I watched a lot of Youtube videos both day-in-the-life of a developer and advice for cs majors, which was both fun and rather helpful.

Today I did a bit of reading for my algorithms and data anlysis class, which is staring in exactly three weeks.

I also did some handwriting improvement practice, which is something new I’m trying out.

I hope to keep the pace and continue sticking to this challenge. Maybe even after I’ve completed the 100 days!

MEDIA DETOX PROJECT

Before starting this project, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I was almost sure that I would not last a whole day without using any media and technology and thought that journaling what I do online for a day would be fun. However, what I discovered was rather surprising and to some extent eye-opening. Indeed, in 2017, it is very hard to disconnect completely because technology is everywhere. On the media detox day, I wanted to do my laundry but quickly found out that it was not possible. I didn’t know if I had enough money in my laundrette card and if not, I would have had to go online and top up my account, which I couldn’t do on that day. So, something as simple as washing my clothes turned out to be an impossible task. Moreover, I discovered that I was not so attached to social media or the Internet in general, but to my phone as an object that somehow gives me a feeling of safety, confirming Marshall McLuhan’s theory that technology is an extension to our bodies. (1964) On that day I decided to go for a run, which I had been planning to do for some time now. When I was working out before, I always had my headphones on, because I believed that it helped me stay focused and motivated. Yet, that was not the case. Without the music, I could focus on my breathing more, generally feel better while running and notice the world around me. After the discussion on the media journaling day, I put my headphones on but forgot to play music in the rush. I sat on a bench smoking, and it was so peaceful. The sun was out and even though there was a breeze it was warm enough to be in a t-shirt. That made me realize that although I felt the absence of music in the media detox day, that day was different. I needed solitude and silence to cope with the media overdose. I found out that documenting my every single interaction with media and people was so mentally exhausting that I couldn’t wait for the day to end. I also realized that many of the things that I do on my phone are purely out of habit, which to some extent could be considered an addiction, as Ronald Pies suggested. (2009) However, I believe that my hatred for the red dots at the edge of apps signifying a notification is stronger than my desire to ‘stay connected’. Overall, I think that this project was a great experience which made me realize that I never really cared much for being connected to others online or my ‘public sphere’. (Susen, 2011) However, I think our lives are too entangled with technology, e.g. even using the laundrette requires you to use the Internet, to be able to completely disconnect, which in my opinion contradicts Laura Portwood-Stacer’s claim that media abstinence is an act of self-care, because even simple tasks connected to one’s wellbeing cannot be done offline anymore.
