Round Two

I had a snow day today (and another tomorrow!) and thought I'd use my extra time tonight to get started on episodes 2x02 of New Girl ("Katie") and The Mindy Project ("The Other Dr. L") for my serial project! I want to get as much of the seasons this semester as possible.

Like last time, I'll be live-blogging as I watch and then write a summary comparing and contrasting the episodes once I'm done! Going to start with The Mindy Project this time (b/c James Franco). Get reaaaady!

Episodes 2x01 - "Re-Launch" and "All My Problems Solved Together"

Let's do this thing:

So what's most obvious about these episodes is that they very clearly set the stage for the Mindy/Danny and Jess/Nick relationships that drive the second seasons of both shows. If you didn't already know that these two couples were M2B, these episodes both made it pretty clear. In New Girl, there's Nick bending backwards and forwards to try and comfort Jess after she loses her job. In The Mindy Project, Danny basically loses his shit when he finds out Mindy is back from Haiti and in the hospital. And then at the end of both episodes, we have a sentimental heart-to-heart between both couples.

If, at this point, you didn't see these relationships coming, then I just don't know what to tell you. Even looking at these couples platonically, these episodes develop the characters' friendship and move them from the work friends/roommates territory to the "best friends" tier, as Mindy would put it.

Obviously the plots are not identical, but it is kind of interesting that both are about a "re-launch" or return of one of the main characters. In New Girl, Schmidt gets his penis cast off and throws a party for himself. In The Mindy Project, Mindy returns from Haiti because of a medical emergency. I guess you could count the wedding as a party, but maybe that's taking things too far.

What's probably most important about these episodes is how they contribute to Jess and Mindy's character development. Jess loses her job, which she loves, is forced to reevaluate her life, her future, and her identity. Mindy comes back from Haiti and almost immediately realizes that she does not want to go back. She has matured emotionally from the trip but volunteering in Haiti clearly isn't "her". Both characters face major events that force them to completely reassess who they are and what they are doing with their lives. You wouldn't expect to see such character development in a comedic sitcom, making this all-the-more impressive. The writers for both shows have done a really great job with this - the characters' growth is natural, progressive, and doesn't take away from the shows' comedy. "Re-Launch" and "All My Problems Solved Forever" are great examples of this.
