"Ah, if this is a lot of tears that you wanted to see, well I suppose that you’ll be glad that you missed it. I don’t think I have seen more than 5 persons cry," he confessed, wondering what could be going on in his head.
"Well, I'm no sadist, good for them that they weren't balling." he shrugged, leaning against the pole next to him as he once again tried to figure out what that guy wanted.
"No." Not mad. She was too tired, too numb, to be mad. To be anything but breathing. But she had wanted him there. “Where did you go, John?”
"O-Okay then.." he said as he leaned back on the balls of his feet. She usually didn't ask him where he went, and he knew she wasn't going to like the answer. "Alice..."
"Mmm, it was so much fun," she quipped, her fingers running through her hair again and again. "Death is so interesting, Whitey, and the reactions — mm, you missed a lot."
"I'm quite sure you're the only person I know who would describe a funeral with 'fun'" he said as he shook his head. "But I do agree with you about missing a lot."
"Well, I like John better than Whitey. You really want to hear a girl scream Whitey! while you’re fucking her?” Charlotte snorted and shook her head. The waiter came over and she ordered a BLT with a side of chips and a Coke. After John had ordered, she turned her attention back to him. “A gift?” she said sweetly, leaning her elbows on the table. “Now what could I possibly have done to deserve a gift?”
"So that's why you always moaned out John when we were in bed. mystery solved." he laughed as he ordered a cheeseburger and fries. "What? I can't just give you gifts for nothing?" he asked, smiling over at her as he leaned back. "But you could always do something in the future."
"It’s not any weirder than Whitey," she shot back, pushing open the door to the diner once they reached it. She immediately headed towards the corner table, her favorite; being in the corner meant you had a view of the whole room and no one could surprise you. "If this is your way of asking me to buy you lunch, then fine. I don’t mind.” She slid into the seat and signaled to the waiter.
"Not really, I haven't been called Johnny since I was a child." he followed humbly after her as she took her seat, sitting across from her. "No no, it's okay, Ill buy you lunch. My gift to you, basically."
She’d looked for him, but she hadn’t needed to. If he didn’t come find her, he wasn’t there.
"Yeah."
The smile on his face was involuntary, as were most of his actions when it came to the pretty blonde he had known for years now. "Al! How have yo- you're mad." he cut himself off after he had really looked at her.
"Do you want a brief summary, or are you good?" he enquired, pushing himself off his patrol car and motionning his fellow driver to stay inside.
"Of the funeral? I think I can guess - people crying, someone gives a speech, and then more crying... thanks for the offer, though." he said, eyeing the patrol car as he looked back at the man.
"You aren’t as opaque as you think you are, Johnny." Either that, or Charlotte was better at reading and observing people than she already knew. She began to walk with him and chuckled. "Excuse me, I have enough money to pay for my own lunch. But I mean, if you’re offering…"
"Don't call me Johnny, that's weird." he said, pushing her with his shoulder lightly as he led them to the nearest diner. "Sure, sure, that's what you say now, the check's gonna come and you're gonna just sit there looking pretty."
"Victory," she stated triumphantly, throwing her hands up in mock celebration. He wasn’t going to win that one. "I was just going to grab lunch, you hungry?"
"Oh shutup." he groaned, throwing an arm around her shouler as he began walking in the direction she had been going before him. "Oh, you just want me to pay."
"And where have you been?" Alek stopped when he saw Whitey wandering around aimlessly.
"Hi Whitey, how have you been? What have you been up to?" he pretended to ask himself before he actually stopped the answer his question. "You know... around. It hasn't been that long."
"Uh, any time you’ve had a line too many?" Charlotte rose a brow, but smiled to let him know she was just teasing.
He was abou to respond before he let out a sigh. "Yeah, yeah okay, you might have a point. But whatever, where were you headed?"
She laughed along with him and reached up to pat his cheek condescendingly. “I hate to break it to you, honey, but you’ve been known to cause a scene or two.”
He rolled his eyes at her pat, puffing out his cheeks like a child. "Name one time." he said, crossing his arms as he leaned against the wall.
Charlotte was just turning a corner when she heard a familiar voice. “It’s probably for the best,” she said with a smirk. “You might have caused a scene.”
He pretended to be offended as he stopped in front of the small brunette who had popped up in front of him with a hand raised up to his chest. "I never- I do not cause scenes!" he laughed.
"Guess I missed the funeral..." he mused to himself as he walked towards the Chamberlain, stuffing his hands in his pockets as he looked around the empty streets.
