This commission came about from a combination of an idea I had about Ben Grimm being stuck in the DC Universe, and some of Evan Shaner’s favorite characters to draw. I figured if Ben got stuck in the DCU, he’d seek out people who could replace his team. Plastic Man would be the stretchy guy who didn’t use all of those big words that Ben doesn’t understand. Black Canary would be the strong, beautiful blonde who he could actually hit on, because she’s not married to his best friend. And Captain Marvel is the powerful kid who won’t play practical jokes on Ben all of the time. And they’d have a bunch of adventures fighting DCU villains as Ben increasingly realizes he still prefers his old team and eventually finds a way back home to the Marvel Universe. And anyway, Evan went above and beyond on this commission! I LOVE Plas up top smoking the bubble pipe and trying to look intelligent! And I did not expect all of the villains so that was a huge plus, especially since he included Gentleman Ghost! Later, Simon Gough came in and worked his coloring magic and made this commission just plain gorgeous! I love how Simon adapts his coloring style to each individual artist, as you can clearly see here with how he colored Evan. Also, I should point out that this piece is a homage to the cover of Fantastic Four #190.
