Armin Arlert is a member of the Survey Corps, the branch of military that most often finds itself face-to-face with looming, bloody-thirsty monsters. He also happens to enjoy living, and once planned on doing it for quite a while. Breathing, that is. It's rather unfortunate then that Armin's only remaining family enlisted. His best friends, Eren and Mikasa, both knew what they had to do. At fifteen, Armin only knew that he couldn't sit back and lose another loved one. And so he fights, day after day, to remain breathing, and to gain some of the courage that always seemed to escape him. Tracking wholearlert. Everything is welcome.

"Ah," She said, snapping into attention when she noticed that she had offended him. "No, that isn’t what I meant sir." She added quickly, trying to cover herself up a bit in words. "If you’re allow me to speak freely, there has been something on my mind since this evening began." The guard trailed off, watching him carefully carve into the wood. 

Mikasa wouldn’t lie and say how observant he was didn’t unsettle her slightly. She was used to people watching her and seeing how she would react but his gaze went deeper into her skin. It was something that wanted to pull her apart, stretch her from the inside and see how fast she could react to something changing. Mikasa wasn’t used to that sort of attention, and it rattled her despite how well she covered it by the drunken stupor she was now.

Running a couple fingers over the shallow marking on the armrest, Armin glanced at his guard through messy blond bangs. "Please, do speak freely. What reason is there to be meek? Speak freely and confidently and openly, and don't doubt that I wish to hear it. A head guard, she needs to communicate with the king. A trouble to one is a trouble to the other. And so on. Too often people mistake thoroughness as impertinence."

The king spoke softly and in a monotone manner rather unlike his usual habits. He reached forward, wishing for another colourful splash on his suddenly boring palate. Armin cleared his throat lowly. "I'm afraid the one thing my father surely taught me himself was how to rant. I apologize, go on."

Mikasa’s usual frown had returned to her face when he had begun to talk again. She wasn’t much for activities that required lots of heavy thinking and most of what he said hadn’t even crossed her mind until he had mentioned it. Those words seemed to weigh heavy on her shoulders once she noticed it was there. 

"Yes, of course." She was only half agreeing, since most of his words went right over her head from the alcohol. Mikasa was never good at lying. "It has been many years." She uttered, tracing a long finger across the wooden table.

Large eyes narrowed slowly, watching her awkward movements. From what he'd seen of her earlier in the night he hadn't thought it possible. To think such a sly, smooth creature could act so... for lack of a better word- awkwardly. It was strange.

"You aren't interested, are you?" Armin smiled at her, leaning back in his chair. He felt a bit dwarfed even in the study. Why do the casual chairs have to be throne-like too? he asked himself, using a fingernail to spitefully push a thin crescent moon into the wood. "I may as well be a babbling old man already, right? I hate when I give that impression. So soon, too."
