In 2016, I chose to come out as bi. And for me, bisexual does not mean binary, meaning men or women, it means my gender, and whoever I fall in love with, whatever gender they identify as. For us to showcase this character who is a core member of the ensemble, who’s not going anywhere, who is happy who has friends, a chosen family that she loves, and who is successful in her life, is something I never saw growing up on television. I never thought a happy ending could be for me.

@sapphic girls: it’s okay if it’s hard to accept your identity. It’s okay if you wish that you didn’t like girls or that you were straight. It’s okay to be struggling with recognizing your attraction and trying to wish it away or ignore it. It’s okay to feel guilty and uncomfortable and scared for liking other girls. I know that it may seem like other girls who like girls are always content and happy with their identity, but we are all living in an incredibly homophobic and biphobic society, we are all dealing with overcoming compulsory heterosexuality and trying to unlearn everything that we’ve internalized. I know that hating your identity isn’t ideal or where you want to be, but I also know that it gets better with time. You aren’t alone and it’s not abnormal to be feeling stuck and upset instead of excited and happy to like girls all the time. You’re going to be okay.
