THE LUNACHICKS
by LISA MARIE POMPILIO
All literature is scarry. It celebrates the wound and repeats the lesion.
Hélène Cixous, Preface to Stigmata (via theotreptos)
To be human we need to experience the end of the world. We need to lose the world, to lose a world, and to discover that there is more than one world and that the world isn’t what we think it is.
Hélène Cixous, from Three Steps on the Ladder of Writing. (via xshayarsha)

The Pretenders - Back On The Chain Gang
Chrissie Hynde moved from Akron to London in 1973 and hung out and played with the likes of Ray Davies, Nick Lowe, The Clash and Malcolm McClaren - definitely not in Ohio anymore. Chrissie’s talent and connections led to her forming what would be The Pretenders in 1978 and making two successful albums.
June of 1982 almost destroyed the band. Chrissie had to fire the bass player over drug issues; two days later the guitarist died from drugs. Reeling from this, she took a song intended to be about her relationship and child with Davies and reworked it to reflect on the death. “Back On The Chain Gang” was recorded in July with caretaker bass and guitar players. It turned out to be one of the band’s best songs.
Check out the hammer-swing grunts in the chorus, reaching back to Sam Cooke’s “Chain Gang”.
People are always shouting they want to create a better future. It’s not true. The future is an apathetic void of no interest to anyone. The past is full of life, eager to irritate us, provoke and insult us, tempt us to destroy or repaint it. The only reason people want to be masters of the future is to change the past.
Milan Kundera, The Unbearable Lightness of Being (via msjnaomi)
“We pass through the present with our eyes blindfolded. We are permitted merely to sense and guess at what we are actually experiencing. Only later when the cloth is untied can we glance at the past and find out what we have experienced and what meaning it has.”
Mila Kundera (Laughable Loves)
