Green Sod is inviting you to walk with curiosity and wonder, to discover a renewed sense of connection to the 'wild' and your place in it. The heart of this fundraising event is connecting to the small unnoticed but ever-present elements of nature that are all around us every day; tuning into how nature expresses itself in a variety of dazzling ways.
Why Walk? I only went out for a walk and finally concluded to stay out till sundown, for going out, I found, was really going in. - John Muir

How would your area score in the conservation ratings?
extract from Michael Viney’s article in The Irish Times this weekend:
…….Botanical “rewilding” is the aim of Green Sod Ireland, a charity founded in 2007 to conserve “wild acres” of gifted land – “a celebration of the overgrown, the hidden, the weed and the bramble, where species thrive”. It looks not only to the countryside but also to protecting or creating wild and weedy plots on urban housing estates. It will promote its ideas on walks for Earth Day, on April 22nd. Along with land in Carlow, Green Sod Ireland has apparently been given five or six hectares of land at Salruck, at Little Killary, across the bay from me in Connemara. A lovely, semi-natural corner, indeed, and for a time a contemplative haven for Ludwig Wittgenstein. He too, I gather, thought that nature owes us nothing but itself.
Another one, just because!

The world exists in our gardens. While we are tucked up in the safety and comfort of our homes, tiny beings are hiding in our lawns and eating, mating or even sleeping on our flowers. The wonderful thing about gardens is that none of them are devoid of wildlife - every one has insects, birds or the odd mammal passing through. By encouraging wildlife to our garden we can help protect local species, connect with nature and learn more about the fascinating wild world on our doorstep.

Its almost a year since Eileen Coyne Gifted Green Sod land in Connemara, land which is now part of Green Sod's protected WildAcres. Having protected WildAcres in your area is a wonderful way to ensure that biodiversity and the indigenous inhabitants can flourish and thrive - that there are places left untouched for future generations.
The WildAwake project is to raise funds for Green Sod Ireland to establish more WildAcres across Ireland. What we want you to do is, Walk Where You Are - Simply register for WildAwake, make a donation and we will give you a fun guide to take on your walk.
