I’m in love with this 80′s Famicom covers – Here’s Herakles no Eikou Toujin Makyou Den (first of the long running Herakles series, I think the DS one is the only one to get a global release)
Oh hey! My book is out. Fancy that.

that moment when you realize that you are as badass as everyone thinks you are (so fuck the doubt) or maybe even when thinks you are weak as fuck and no - seriously i am a badass
this might be the same feeling -- Schrödinger’s badassery (someone will come up with a better name down the road)

Mental health freak out day (2)
At least Aquarium Drunkard dropped Heatwave 3 today so I have some grooving stuff to go crazy to Well that is half true Had a good afternoon with Nan - ate at Furr's (which was not good, sadly); drove around aimless in Arlington (I enjoyed it more than she did); Big Lots wanderings (sold on kitchen Big Lots stuff, everything else I am not sure); Tom Thumb run for Nan for movie night dinner (I dug it, maybe she did too) Then back to weird headspace that I only escaped through Big Wave Golden Ale (because that Shiner Rose Wine Beer Pale Ale shit is the worst -- basically boone's farm mixed with Shiner's version of a pale ale - no kidding, wine cooler with a kick? yuck - so onto Hawai'ian beer and prayer (didn't pray all day) and finally shaking loose the cobwebs and back in it slowly no seriously, did dished, made the bed, got the grooves going on (the aforementioned Heatwave 3), got protection incense burning all over the apartment and a courage rikki candle going oh yeah, I am totally getting my vibe on -- funny how I almost made it something specific but then I decided to say fuck it - i love Wicca, i love Jesus, i love Satan, i love Mahmoud, i love Vishnu & all the folks, i love Buddha, i love Kazantzakis, i love Christ, i love Odysseus, i love me - there you go so yeah, I am totally getting my vibe on.
music for 2019
knee deep in obscure Japanese jazz from Aquarium Drunkard --
excited about all the albums that coming out - new Hiss Golden Messenger (eventually), new Keiji Haino & SUMAC this summer, new Old Man Gloom (eventually), new Boris and classic repressings (Feedbacker and Akuma no Uta), lots of shows on the horizon -- Hiss, Boris, Melvins
I love how a lull in my bands give me time to dive into other stuff - world music has been my go-to lately -
well back to the workday - just wanted to throw down some excitement - music style
Still thinking about Norm Breyfogle and the Batman comics he did with Alan Grant. I love this sequence from Detective Comics 594, how the unconventional layout doesn’t confuse the reader at all, how it stays in motion, and how the close-up of Alfred at the computer is bordered in such a way to point at what it’s a close-up of. It doesn’t just have this TV-drama talking-heads approach to exposition eating up multiple pages I see in so many genre comics. While this sort of thing isn’t atypical to older Batman comics, and you might see similar things in a Neal Adams page, in newer work, for instance Greg Capullo’s, there’s nothing remotely comparable. I also really like that the overhead lamps are included, but they’re just silhouettes, because they themselves are the light source within the image. It’s smart cartooning, and Adrienne Roy does a great job with the limited color palette available for printing on newsprint at the time.
Something you don’t see in this sequence, but whose presence elsewhere allows for this sort of thing, is that when Breyfogle transitions between different scenes, he’ll make the panel borders a little larger, so the reader senses a larger transition. So, there can be multiple scenes on a page, and this allows the beats within an individual scene to flow that much more kinetically.
I think these comics are great but I wonder about the extent to which its storytelling could translate to something more complex or emotionally engaging, where the reader can’t anticipate the basic plot beats. For instance, here, does the fact that the panels follow the contour of the dinosaur’s body make sense if you don’t know, from having seen it before, that there’s a stuffed-and-mounted Tyrannosaurus in the Batcave? While many comics are not as engaging or visually interesting as these, that includes other work by the same artist: Breyfogle’s creator-owned comic, Metaphysique, totally sucks.

5-19-2019 SUNDAY
Shit work day at Subway. Ran the entire lunch myself. Stupid online order and the guy scowling at me the entire time while I was making it & this Trumpster huffing and puffing his way in line but too much of a fag to say anything -- Told Tyja that it was going to be my last day - I need to get a focus on packing, not worry about Got boxes at Katie's -- got boxes for the move, need to move them into the apartment, planning on the cover of night just 'cause (more laziness than anything) Simpsons are not on tonight -- apparently Hotel Transylvania 9? i don't know, which one do they have a baby in? is it the cruise one? that one looked fun sipping on some remainders of the Shiner Heat Wave pack and praying -- got the playlist going on Spotify -- I need to combine a bunch to make something, my playlists seem to putter out around 45 minutes in, need to work on it or embrace it talked to Gener last night - most forced conversation known to man, he's trying to spin it, I might have heard spinning plates in the background - the phrase "when she is tasked to do something, she does a really good job" sent shivers down my spine in a bad way also his description of the Frank / Jess visit is totally at odds with what they said without denying anything they said, that left a lot of wiggle room I am not getting involved - if anything after my extended ritutal the last few nights with forgiving myself and letting things go -- I feel like I can cut a lot of bullshit loose Now I am in organize mode, trying to get the house liveable as well as moveable Have a lot to do next week (this coming up week -- let's live in the moment) - so scratch that - lots to do this week: Pick up comix at the comic place Pack up stuff Settle up with the Willows Dive into work hardcore -- I really need to be doing a better job, treading water would be better than what I am doing Don't get lazy - walk more, move around, pet on the animals, enjoy life, don't brood
old notes on Hama (found on old phone July 15, 2012?)
Labros -- slayer of Boaz (Acteon) when he took the form of a stag after being cuckolded by Astaroth when he marched forth from the Southern Holds -- upon slaying the stag, Labros was pursued by the men of Boaz north where he lost them within sight of Enoch deep within Nod
it is the same Labros who leads the mutiny against Ur’Hamman and attempts to touch the Lady Amelia but cannot do it -- he falls to his knees and weeps in sight of Geran, when Geran & Jiddah are sent to negotiate with Ur’Hamman it is Labros who stands at the stern of the ship watching it all. His friendship with Ur’Hamman was that of close friends -- he is among the hunting group in which Ur’Hamman & others took down the boar
Labros is also at the beach at the end
son of Danel
Archer? Aqhat -- holy bow, stolen by an eagle sent by Ashtarte
Perhaps a different character
The date might be wrong -- definitely July 15th, maybe 2011 or 2012 -- lot to unpack here -- the slayer of Boaz who is turned into a stag and pursuit echoes the flight of Jacobim from earlier tradition, curious is the where he lost them within sight of Enoch deep within Nod
Labros is also the first mate of Hama -- here in his original Ur’Hamman, the Lady Amelia is still his love, not the servant girl Melia and the Lady Amelia turned into Mari who is betrothed to Aki of Del -- the entire scene on the boat is fleshed out and not changed, he leads the mutiny and tries to molest Hama’s love (Ur’Hamman’s Lady Amelia) but can’t, weeps, when negotiations are held with Hama he watches from the stern.
Curiously the hunt with Ur’Hamman and the boar -- the Great Hunt was always a concept but here it is tied to Hama not his father, the generational thing did not happen until years later, but it is still here --
The line - Labros is also at the beach at the end - is mysterious. I don’t know if it means that he is on K’ay or the beach with Lahan (at this point the Lahan ending was definitely there -- the old man and the evening star was already written fleshing that out) -- sketches had the crew landing back at K’ay where they were not welcomed and violence broke out, a hostage was taken, the people of K’ay rose against the crew and only a few who repented and told what happened lived - it is definitely strange that Labros would be one of them
the son of Danel -- rough geneology for Labros which has significance since his origin is placed in Boaz
The archer with the holy bow Aqhat who has it stolen from an eagle sent by Ashtarte - I have no recollection -- almost instantly struck out with perhaps a different character.
Of course a lot of ideas where in flux - on the same old phone I found the origins of Rano Pano (March 13, 2012) which follow:
Rano Pano of the Binjawi
Pure black cat with a spot of white on his neck in a diamond shape
The other slave cats laugh when he says his name - he begs to escape - he was not born a slave
Thinking more a bird - waves his wings triumphantly when he says his name “Rano Pano”
Then a note in relation to it -- when the Binjawi were being incorporated into Akasha (April 24, 2013):
Winged men of Altarr
The floating continent of Belara
The beginnings of Tua’lith (originally the home of the winged men until it took on its dreamlike nature)?

So the reality of sobriety is that I am a way more organized and boring person that I was when I was on the sauce or stoned out of my gills -- taking the girls out at regular intervals, energy levels are slowly rising, back to drinking coffee, not sleeping as much, music is actually even more important, and I am making crazy progress in Dragon Quest XI.
Seeing the PO tomorrow -- going to start the next (hopefully last step) in this entire trial of being on probation, the SOP classes or something of that ilk, have a feeling that it will end up being rather intensive, financially and time consuming, but I need to buckle down and get it done -- I have been skirting everything the entire time and it is time that I grow up, do the damn thing, rock the thing the best that I can. For some reason I am not nervous about tomorrow, I am too organized at the moment - already have all the paperwork and such.
Going to have to get more into the exercise scene -- trying to get motivated to exercise bike some -- not really been in a watching mood (like I said, Dragon Quest has got its hooks in me) but watching some horror movies, happened upon Monster Squad on Amazon and watched some of that -- cheesy but fun, I remember loving it as a kid, as an adult I laugh at the campiness and the faux-edginess but it’s good fun -- totally an artifact of its time, there is no way that a movie would allow the kids to talk like they do.
Been eating good - breakfast, lunch, and dinner -- cooking way more, doing what needs to be done, still putting everything off that needs to get done but at least I am more focused and such. I just need to keep things moving, keep positive and keep everything going.
Well jamming to Hamad Kalkaba (this album is something special) and chair dancing at the moment, just downed some coffee, about to drink some more.
Oh about novel writing in November -- thinking about dusting off Mark of the Beast -- don’t think that I have anything actually written down in years, just years of plotting and might throw down. Have always toyed with writing Hama and I have been circling that but I really think I need to throw down something for once and see how it works out. I need to research the entire novel writing thing -- probably get a working outline? maybe? I don’t know -- the entire thing seems easy in theory but it execution it might be difficult -- I just know that I need to be writing more, I need to be doing more everything, working more, writing more, reading more, living more, walking more, exercising more, gaming more, socializing more, doing more of everything (think I said that before).
Well off here -- toying with deleting social media or just keeping myself off of it -- maybe deleting all the stuff off my phone for bit might be the tonic that I need to help get my life back going the way that I want to -- sounds so extreme, might end up doing it, laughing, and then moving on to more coffee, then some Dragon Quest or even Monster Squad and bike riding. Lots of options for a man like me.
Dragon Quest XI - 34 hours in
Dove back in for a few hours tonight -- like I have said, this game has its hooks in me, I finally have a firm grasp on its rhythm and flow and I am totally in it. After some lighthearted side quests for a girl’s school tucked away in the mountains -- a school teaching girls to hunt for mini medals, though even in its silly lighthearted manner there is some poignant little scenes - Jade’s mother apparently was a student there before she moved to Heliodore to marry the king and left a friend a parting gift, it was obvious but also subtle, the game didn’t make a big deal out of it which makes it that much more poignant.
Then to a tourist trap town with ancient ruins and a mural that brings good luck which of course is a demonic trap (Dora-in-Gray is a genius name, I groaned and chuckled) and also gives us a tease of Mordegan - the big baddie, he destroyed an ancient civilization that he possessed, Rab is convinced that Heliodore is next, Jade looks conflicted for a moment, I know that at some point this will all come to a head, watching it play it is a joy.
I almost forgot - before the tourist trap town into ancient mural dungeon (which was surreal and straight forward - felt like I was in a modern Final Fantasy dungeon - ooh burn) I climbed a mountain and got another orb from an evil eagle. It was a fun dungeon, lot of vertical and mount swapping. I love how the mounts are still a thing -- at first they just seemed gimmicky but as the game goes on they are actually pretty fun and the entire mural dungeon, I basically rode a skeleton thing and tore through it - engaging occassionally.
Have no idea where the game is going next - have a side quest to wrap up and then I guess I am heading back to sea, the snow covered north beckons as well some loose ends -- can open the red locked doors that have littered the game so far, so I can always go back and explore and get goodies.
I have to say that I am very impressed -- can’t wait to dive into it more.
gaming stuffs (week of 10/20/2018)
Dragon Quest XI -- 30 hours in --
This is the point where I give up all hesitation and just gush about how much I love this game -- the short story approach to encounters, each little town and adventure has its own flavor and tone, somehow tying in with some subtle characterization or leading into an overarching plot line. The gameplay has become second nature -- let’s just say that I am digging the entire Dragon Quest flow, the menu system can go to hell sometimes and items are mostly useless at least the way that I play, but it is definitely something special. I don’t know if I just didn’t really grok Dragon Quest VIII when I played it all those years ago (I was a different person then, easily distracted, frustrated, and prone to leave games by the wayside for the most stupid of reasons) but this one has totally got its hooks in me. There is just the right amount of adventuring, new areas opening up, I guess it was the entire mermaid quest and what follows that really sealed the deal for me -- I do wonder if it is all going to come together, have heard vague rumblings about it getting wonky in the later half but so far I am in it. 30 hours and I only know the name of the main villain -- I think I am in for the long haul, now the entire “it’s a 100 hours” does not seem that far fetched.
Final Fantasy IV - about to climb Mt. Ordeals
This one is a classic. Decided to jump into it -- been playing the Super NES mini, moved it into my bedroom and doing the entire sitting on the bed, playing, bring back memories. Playing a fan translation of the Japanese original so all the items and abilities, sometimes it gets a little too literal (seriously Golbeze?) and apparently there are some pop culture references that rear their ugly head similar to Working Designs, but a stray groaner line here or there is not enough to turn me off. I forgot how brisk the pace of this game is -- I remember taking hours to do stuff when I was younger, now I am blowing through it, everything falling into place. There is a reason this is a classic. Looking forward to seeing it open up.
Super Castlevania IV
Talk about a difficulty curve. I basically walked through the first half of the game and now in Castlevania proper I am butting heads with the difficulty level. Enjoying my time with it -- the game chugs more that I remember, but it’s still a blast, an early Super NES game so it still has that early Super NES jank that only Nintendo was able to get around (poor Capcom and Konami had it bad -- look at Ghouls and Ghost, Gradius). Since I have been playing that weird Super NES Dracula X version -- this early one is rather interesting. Maybe nostalgia has colored everyone’s perceptions, but Dracula X SNES might be a tad smoother (rougher looking at times) but tougher. I will continue my diving in.
Dragon Quest V - opening section
And since I am all about some Dragon Quest -- decided to start a game on this one, not far at all, but I am seeing how this series works and I love it. Might have made a convert of me. I am planning on inching my way through this one, DQ XI has its hooks in me right now, so I don’t know how this one will go but any movement is good.
