dray reacted on reflex, hand coming up within the second she’d dropped the spoon to cool down the metal. they all needed each other, each element. there wasn’t balance if one was missing, especially when it came to fire and water. “dunno what i’d done, but fine, yeah, i’ll leave you alone.” he got up from his seat, but stopped to add, “three deep breaths. have t’let a fire sputter out so it’s harder t’start a new one.”

she’s feeling even more immature than usual, scowling at his advice even though she’d gotten what she wanted. “don’t tell me what to do, i know what i’m doing with my own powers.” but she doesn’t, it’s obvious to everyone. winny knows she’s quite a worthless witch. “i don’t need your advice, i don’t need you to act like you care about me. i know you don’t. and i don’t need anymore people not caring about me!”

“is that what i should do or what y’want me t’do? big difference.” should was always relative. there was always someone who’d believe a particular thing is what someone should do while another thought the should was an entirely different thing. want was a different story.

“both,” winny says flatly, staring down at her cereal as he grip tightens around her spoon. “i want you and zach to stay far, far away from me. and i’ll stay far, far away from you. that’s the way i want it. that’s the way it should be.” before she can stop it her spoon is burning, turning red and yellow before she drops it into the bowl of sugary milk, rubbing at her fingers slightly where they were red.

“just a guy. or two. maybe three,” winny stirs her cereal around, not entirely sure if she can trust the girl. “what’s your name?”

“suppose so,” winny says with a shrug, not really even considering her mood. “no reason in bein’ sad is there.”

it took half a second to notice the girl’s unpleasant current being. maybe that lad she’d talked about didn’t love her back or something. people were so emotional. “ignoring problems, are we?”

she pauses for only a moment, looking up from her bowl of cereal to meet his gaze before she goes back to staring at her lucky charms, shoving another spoonful into her mouth. “we shouldn’t be talking. you should leave me alone.”

“i figured since tomorrow is halloween i should actually leave my bed today.” her eyes are still red and her hair is a tangled mess, but at least she’s out of her room and shoveling food into her mouth -- much more liveliness than she’s exhibited the entire week. “and tomorrow i’m gonna get so wasted that i forget my own name so i can start fresh and new on sunday.”

“yes you are! or were! talking a lot of shit to dray and acting like everybody goes around falling in love with their best friend,” zachary rolled his eyes at her. “what the fuck is your problem wtih me? you wanted sex, i gave it to you. you wanted a cuddle, i gave it to you. you even took my fucking cigarette, and now you’re acting like i’m some sort of demon when i only found out your name because of dray who found out from somebody else,” his irritation was unnecessary and zach knew it. “and now you’re acting as if dray was much better. he doesn’t give a shit about you, blondie, or your feelings. if anything you’re amusing. you were just part of a competition for both of us and the points weren’t even counted because the two of us got to you. so stop being a naive little thing and stop believing dray is much better than i am. most of all, stop fucking minding other people’s business.”

it’s just him, he’s just being himself. she tells herself that at least five times after he’s done talking but it doesn’t do anything to sooth the wounds he’s poked at. he doesn’t give a shit about you, blonde, or your feelings. if anything you’re amusing. she knows that neither dray or zach care about her, but it was hard to hear that dray didn’t even care about her feelings when he seemed like he did for a moment or two. but the amusing part...that was even worse to hear. she’s never taken seriously, never valued. she’s just a girl that serves a purpose for a night or two to people, then she’s a memory. she’s a joke. she’s nothing. by the time she comes out of her head she realizes she hasn’t turned away from him, but tears are leaking from the corners of her eyes as she frowns, her eyes stuck to his face even though he hasn’t spoken in minutes. her fingertips are burning in the palm of her hand and she knows she needs to leave. there’s no reason to stay here or say anything else, so she quickly turns away, running down the hall just as fast as she’d come.

zach didn’t get bothered by stuff like this often - in fact, he did a great job at ignoring anything he might feel whenever dray laughed about people who came up to him asking him if the two of them were in a relationship. it didn’t bother him, it shouldn’t, and yet here he was, being the dick he knew he could be. “you’re shoving your tiny little nose into other people’s business, darling, that’s what you’re doing. stop it.” before you make dray believe that i might have feelings for him.

“i am not!” winny protests, her arms straightening as her little hands curl into fists, stomping her foot down onto the ground. “we were talking! he was being nice and we were just talking!! i told him about your auras, that’s it! it’s not my fault that i can read your auras and it’s not my fault that you don’t try to see what it means! i didn’t even know you were the only one in this stupid room and if i did i never would have talked to you on account of i never want to talk to you again!!!!”

the look on his face is murderous. “cute,” zach says, arms folded over his chest. “winny, right?” he asks, arching an eyebrow. “yeah, so, quit that thing you’re doing with telling dray he’s in love with me. it’s not quirky, it’s not cute or adorable or true. so knock it off.”

she certainly hadn’t expected him to be the only one in the room -- if she’d known it would be him she wouldn’t have come in at all. he was essentially the last person she ever wanted to speak to. “hmph.” her own arms cross over her chest, staring him down at intimidating as she can. “i call it like i see it,” she snaps, a line she’s heard her mom say to her dad a million times. “and you can’t tell me what to do. i’m not hurting anyone. unlike you, mister pissy attitude.”

his eyes are so fond, focused on her and only her. theo doesn’t see the people they pass and if they give them any looks for running down the halls he doesn’t notice, because all he sees is her. he knows the fire house, probably just as well as she knows the water one, because they go to each other’s rooms all the time and he sees the familiar faces, only now smiling sheepishly as they make their way through until they’re in her room. theo settles down on her mattress with a slight huff, lifting his eyebrows at her, “alright, i promise to keep my eyes closed.” winny always did things like this. he remembers just a few days ago when she plopped two little rats into his hands, theo almost having a heart attack, for he hadn’t expected her to place live moving animals in his hands. he’s ready for anything at this point, though hasn’t a clue what to expect and when he opens his eyes, he feels a sudden heat building in his chest, spreading all over, swallowing the lump in his throat slow. “you look gorgeous.” he murmurs, voice hoarse as if he hadn’t spoken for days. “winny, babe, you look.. so so pretty..”

his aura changes the second he opens his eyes and winny doesn’t miss it for a second. her own breath catches, wide grin pulling at her lips before she does a little spin for him. the material is soft and sheer, the warm air from her room flushing her skin as she laughs and stops in front of him again. his compliments make her heart beat faster, biting down on her lip for a moment before she leans forward, kissing lightly at the swell of his cheek. “you’re the sweetest,” she murmurs back, hands resting gingerly on the tops of his shoulders as she steps forward, separating his legs and wiggling into the gap. “does it make you wanna kiss me?” she asks quietly, fingers playing with the curls at the nap of his neck, gaze slightly bashful as she looks up at him through her lashes. “’cause i always wanna kiss you, y’know. you’re special.” her nose brushes against his cheek, then his jaw, her voice growing quieter as her cheeks turn hotter. “tell me you like me...”

theo doesn’t question it, doesn’t ask what’s gotten into her, because really this behaviour wasn’t necessarily new. he and winny had always been quite close like this – maybe he was just making it all up in his head, analyzing everything way too much. but his palms slide slow around her waist, holding tight at the small of her back. “wouldn’t stop you if you did,” he murmurs, the corners of his lips turning upwards as he speaks. and it takes no time to respond, for theo’s already nodding at her question, “yeah, course.” theo reaches for her hand, slotting his fingers between hers and grasping her hand loosely, though his thumb brushes up and down the back of her hand, “what are you gonna show me, hmm?”

the grasp she has on his hand is much tighter, pulling him along to the portals so they can take the route she knows so well. “can’t tell you, it’s gotta be a surprise,” she teases, stepping off into the fire house only a few moments later. theo had been to her room millions of times, but she still held onto his hand tightly as if she was guiding him, pulling him down the hallway until they were in her room. “okay, sit on my bed and close your eyes ---- don’t open them!! do you promise?” she waits to get confirmation and for him to close his eyes before she starts rifling through her closet. once she’s found what she’s been looking for she hangs her wings carefully on a hanger and strips off her t-shirt, sliding on the new soft chiffon babydoll with a smile. winny makes her way over to him quietly, not speaking until she’s right before him. “okay open!! i just got it yesterday -- whattaya think?? is it nice?? do i look pretty??”

theo grins, eye flickering down from winny’s features to where her hand is on his chest. “yeah, course, babe.” he nods, eyes crinkling with fondness. his lips purse slightly, halloween seeming so far away right now – theo hasn’t even given a thought to what he might dress up as this year, yet here he already had plans for the night. “i like the sound of that actually – our own party.” theo isn’t expecting the kiss. winny only kisses him when it’s just them two, no other prying eyes around. his body stiffens, but it only lasts a moment before he melts into her touch, lips pressing to hers. without much thought, his arms slip around her waist, tugging her body in close as he sighs into her mouth. this one feels different than the others though, winny feels closer to him, like their more in tune with each other maybe – theo wasn’t sure what it was, but it was something.

winny could never properly explain how she feels when she’s kissing theo. it’s electricity and calm all at once, like she’s falling into that lake with him and up to her neck in cold water and sitting in front of a fire at the same time. like every moment in her life has led up to this one. she’s a tiny girl in an oversized t-shirt, fairy wings fluttering at her shoulders, but she feels so big and special when she’s pressed up against him. her arms curl around his neck, pressing herself closer and trying to make herself taller all at the same time. she only breaks away when she’s out of breath, lips still tingling as she nudges her nose against his. “i wish i could kiss you forever.” she sounds like she’s in a dream, soft and breathy. “you wanna come over? wanna show you somethin’.”

Ed shuffled closer to try fill in the empty space. “I’m not mad at you, I just.. I just lost my temper.” He replied with a sigh, “I don’t hate you, you didn’t know. I-I shouldn’t expect people to know, especially because I’m not carrying a cane or anything.. but, I don’t know, I suppose I just do expect people to know, which is stupid of me.”

“yeah but i’m upset now,” she whimpers, tears filling her eyes as she sniffles yet again, taking another small step as he comes closer. “you’re not stupid, ‘s my fault for not knowin’, but now i’m upset. and i wanna be alone. i wanna go be alone now.”

“Oh, o-okay..” Ed murmured, then cleared his throat as he scratched the back of his neck. “Well, could I.. could I come.. with you?”

“are you going to try to have sex with me?” winny smiles up at him as she thinks of inviting him to shower with her, which she whole-heartedly meant, but then she thinks of the kiss. how there were no sparks. she thinks of theo, and that’s when she realizes the answer. “i wanna tell you the truth. i like kissing you, but i think i’m in love with a boy named theo. so i don’t think it’d be right to have sex with you. but if you wanna hang out in my room, we can. i’ve got two rats, you might like them.”

Ed gently kissed Winny back as he moved his arms around her waist to hold her a bit closer. “That was definitely a real kiss,” Ed murmured with a small chuckle once their lips parted, though soon gave Winny another kiss.

winny leans into the second kiss easily, but it’s much shorter. her voice is soft when she breaks away, eyes slightly hooded with fatigue. “i should get going, i’m sleepy,” she mumbles.

“Wait, no!” Ed quickly replied as he reached a hand out to stop Winny from going, “Don’t leave, it’s okay– It’s fine, you didn’t know. I shouldn’t have gotten angry, please stay.” He then added, hating how she sounded much different than when she had come running to show off her wings.

she’s already half turned around when his fingers brush her shoulder, asking her to stay. but she feels stupid and unwanted, biting down on her bottom lip to keep it from wobbling. she sniffles, though her eyes aren’t swimming with tears, turning back towards him but still far enough away that she could make an exit. “are you mad at me? do you hate me now?”
