𝐁𝐄𝐍𝐄𝐕𝐎𝐋𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐄, it was what he could offer. a hand, outstretched with hopes of extending naught but peace. though, unfortunately, it had slipped from betwixt lithe fingers; lost to heated arguments, then shouting. he laments the passing of harmony, as it was soon replaced with violence, dissonance, and division. ❝  ——- there’s no need to fight, that’s why.  ❞  stop. think. it’s all he could do. giving in and charging at another ——— there was simply no point to these combats. 

his jaw, albeit severely aching from the kiss of whitened knuckles earlier, tightens; his voice grows louder, relentless in his attempt to keep order  :  ❝  now, hear me out before you start swinging at me again !  ❞  it would be wise for him to surrender. but he wouldn’t. he couldn’t.

𝐓𝚮𝐄𝐑𝐄 𝐖𝚨𝐒 𝚨 𝐌𝐎𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝚮𝐄 𝚮𝚨𝐃 𝐋𝐎𝐒𝐓 𝚮𝐈𝐌𝐒𝐄𝐋𝐅 𝐓𝐎 𝚮𝐈𝐒 𝐎𝐖𝐍 𝚨𝐆𝐆𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐒𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝚨𝐍𝐃 𝐕𝐈𝐎𝐋𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐄—still coming down from who he used to be, lost to a self no longer deserving of a name. he took a step back and breathed in deeply and shook his head. ❝ okay… keep talkin’ then. ❞ he said with his eyes averted—he admitted no fault outwardly, but felt it deep in the pit of his stomach whenever he swallowed. there was an emptiness he would continue to deny until it faded with time. he was reluctant to admit his sins aloud, due to how much they weighed him down. but like a knife stabbed deeply enough to scar and allow the wound ache even after it’s departure. he felt his sins similarly. his nightmares did not often take the form of day creatures, but if he sat too long in his own self loathing, he forgot himself and because what he was programmed to become.

a brief moment passed without words and bucky allowed himself to breathe and rest his shoulders. his eyes found his companions and another sigh escaped, ❝ sorry… ❞ he finally admitted his fault and the words weren’t as bitter as he thought that might taste. still, he was lost of words to explain the reason for his actions, but he would allow luke his moment to speak—if anything, the silence was now desperate to be broken.

eyes drifted to he smile that curved onto his lips — he tried to fight the feeling in his chest, it tightened and he became a bit hotter than he was before. letting himself relax, a smile grew on his features. until the end of time… he thought. there was something unexplainably comforting about those words — he and bucky had their differences but sam knew that he would want no one else watching his back. maybe he was finally letting go of steve, coming to terms with the fact that he was gone. he smiled, relieved.

❛ yeah…  ❜ he replied. ❛ no matter where we end up, i’m sure we’ll find our way back to one another — and that’s okay with me. ❜ his softened eyes never left bucky. ❛ this is good —  ❜ he expresses. ❛ it’s nice to see you like this, buck. ❜ he nudges him playfully.  

𝐁𝐔𝐂𝚱𝐘’𝐒 𝐒𝐌𝐈𝐋𝐄 𝚮𝚨𝐃 𝐁𝐑𝐎𝚱𝐄 𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐎 𝚨 𝐆𝐑𝐈𝐍 𝚨 𝐂𝐑𝐎𝐒𝐒𝐄𝐃 𝚮𝐈𝐒 𝐅𝚨𝐂𝐄, bordering the laughter that fluttered in his stomach like a flittering of a bird preparing to take flight. for once the war he had been battling for what seemed like forever, was quiet. his acceptance of himself and of what he had overcame was becoming more of a strength rather than a crutch or a weakness to hinder him. he had steve to thank, but most of all, he had sam. sam had become his ally knowing everything that he did—knowing the murderer he had been forced to become. never once had sam held that knowledge over his head like a weight or a burden that bucky must forcibly carry. perhaps it was because he knew bucky had already done that himself… whatever the reason, sam had bucky’s back, and bucky had his.

  ❝ i’m dangerously close to becoming a normal human at this point. ❞ bucky still retrained his laughter, but he couldn’t hide the happiness he felt. it had morphed his sorrow and brooding into joy. a genuine feeling of joviality that he had rarely expressed since being pulled out of his familiar time. he could now honestly say he was starting to enjoy life once more.

𝐈𝐍 𝐓𝚮𝐄 𝐌𝐎𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝚮𝐄 𝐋𝐄𝐓𝐒 𝚮𝐈𝐒 𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐃 𝐒𝐋𝐈𝐏 𝚨𝐖𝚨𝐘 𝐅𝐑𝐎𝐌 𝐑𝐄𝚨𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐘 he’s faced with the cruelest demons inside his head. the way they claw and scratch their way to the surface of his mind as if they are tearing straight through a paper thin veil. all around feels cold and dark, and he feels the overwhelming feeling of loneliness. there’s no escape from what he’s done, he has to live with it. there are days that he wakes up not feeling as if he deserves the breath that slips in and out of his lungs—not after he has watched the color run from someone else’s flesh—his eyes as cold as he felt. he remembers feeling nothing as their lives slipped away—he remembers the pain endured each time he let his memory slip from his lips. a weapon is required only to be a tool. nothing more, nothing less. words did not accomplish his mission. they wanted only blood to satisfy their desires.

with just one touch he’s stolen from those memories, back into the present. he feels the warmth of sam’s hand over his own. for a moment he can’t breath. his eyes are wide, and full of fear. he knows sam sees this, because he feels him squeeze tighter—as if bucky were slipping from a ledge. bucky felt the corners of his mouth frown, instead of smile—like he felt he should, to say ‘thank you’. guilt, grief and anguish rushed over him like a wave and he was drowning in his emotions as tears filled his eyes. he didn’t need to say it—he could tell sam knew what he wanted to say. as if his soul resonated with his own, he felt calm—he felt at peace in this moment.
