Keep a place for me….
today i unpacked the boxes you dropped off and the linens still smell like the home we made together. i put the bed together the way you liked, i tucked the corners in and i cried so hard for what used to be. i cried for all the times we held each other sweetly and the laughs and love we shared between these sheets. i cried for the promise we made to never go to bed mad at each other. i still drape the blanket your mom gave me over the foot of the bed, and the puppy nests in it like nothing has changed.
tonight i’ll flip the pillows down, but only on one side. i know that i’ll reach for you in the middle of the night and find nothing. i’ll cry more. in a few days i’ll bury my face in your pillow and it won’t smell like home anymore. and i’ll still cry for us. after everything we put each other through, i’m scared to forget how it felt to fall asleep next to you.
“Long silences. Words weigh more, become palpable. I feel my physical presence in a given space when I talk less.”

“I’m not sure which is worse: intense feeling, or the absence of it.”
