This tale was narrated by my grandmother. When she was young she visited one of her aunt in a village on the outskirts of Kanpur. In the evening she decided to go and read outside as it was getting stuffy inside. So she took the lantern and sat in the backyard. After a while she started feeling strange, there was pin drop silence but she could feel a presence, someone watching her, so she turned around only to find that she could not. it felt as if someone was holding her shoulder and preventing her from turning back. And then it was gone. My grandmother was in so much shock but once she got to her senses, she hurriedly went inside. Next morning she fell ill and by the afternoon her parents took her back to the city for treatment. My grandmother says that her mother had gotten skeptical of the place and never took her back there and for that she is grateful.

What is a voodoo doll?

Voodoo or Vodou is a real religion practiced in Haiti and other places in the Caribbean. Vodou practitioners do make Vodou dolls that are used to help people with healing and to communicate with deceased loved ones.  There are many forms of voodoo and some focus on magic elements. Voodoo dolls can be used to cast spells, control or heal a person or to hurt or take a revenge.

How to make a voodoo doll.

Making a voodoo doll is quite simple and not creepy at all!

Step 1.  Make the doll’s body.

When you create a voodoo doll, you create a literate doll, that is ,with arms, legs, head and a body. For this you can any material like wool, cotton or even paper. One of the ways is making a paper envelope in a shape of a doll and then stuff it or bend wire in a shape of a doll and wrap wool  around it and so on. We are here for magic not an art and crafts.

Step 2.  Personalize the doll.

Personalizing the doll means linking the doll to the target person. For this you can use a photo or hair or a cloth of the target person and sew it on the doll. Once this is done, their emery pattern is imprinted and fused with the doll.

 How to use a voodoo doll

Step 1. Visualise the purpose of your voodoo doll

Now, close your eyes and set an intention for your doll. Whatever the purpose is, harming the person, controlling them or making them fall for you, concentrate on it and channel your energy on the doll.

Step 2. Call upon the voodoo deities

Focus your prayers on one the Loa or voodoo deities and ask their help so that the doll embodies the person you intend it to.

Step 3. Baptize the doll.

In the final step, sprinkle water on the doll and repeat twice – “I baptize you,( Person name), all that I do to this doll, I do to you. Amen.”

 Now your doll is ready to fulfil its purpose. Focus and transfer your loving energy into the doll to make the intended person fall in love with you, or you can focus your energy and control them or the best thing- poke needles into it to hurt them.

PARANORMAL IN POPULAR CULTURE

    “Ssshh koi hai….”remember the chills which used to run down our spines when as kids we used to sit down in front of television screens at 11:00pm to watch these shows which now might seem more funny than scary, but you will have to agree that watching horror shows and movies have been one our guilty pleasures even though it does not let us sleep at night but we still love it, it is like going back to your toxic exes, it is dreadful but you cannot resist.

What we all can agree upon is that most of the information we have today about Ghosts, Spirits, Witches comes from their representation in popular culture which basically is through movies ,theater shows and folklore. The horror genre has been there in the movies for quite some time now, with the world’s first horror movie “THE HAUNTED CASTLE” made in 1896 and first Bollywood horror movie “MAHAL” made in 1946 which surely was long back and from then horror movies have been gaining popularity.

Our mothers have always been warning us to avoid watching horror movies since they were the ones who had to calm us down when we could not sleep at night after watching horror movies and our cries of “ mummy darr lag raha hai” met with “aur dekh bhoot aur chudailon wali picturein”, but did it stop us? Nahh. So here is the list of both Bollywood and Hollywood horror movies which you may like to watch for some sleepless nights:

Yavarum Nalam titled 13B in Hindi is a 2009 bilingual (Tamil-Hindi) psychological horror film written and directed by Vikram Kumar, starring Madhavan and Neetu Chandra in the lead roles. The film revolves around a mysterious TV show that mirrors and reveals what will happen in the protagonist's family's life that day. Everything is great--lighting, sound, etc. The plot is fascinating and the unraveling of the story behind the TV serial's characters is eye-popping! The violent flashbacks and disturbed characters leaves the viewers horrified! Madhavan, as always, has given a sincere and outstanding performance! You feel terrified with him. 13B is a fine example of intellectual horror. It does not force feed the suspense, but allows the viewer to build their own overtime as the protagonist becomes aware of the unnatural forces manipulating his and his family's mentality to the breaking point

 2.Woh Kaun Thi(1964)

Woh Kaun Thi? is a 1964 black-and-white psychological mystery film directed by Raj Khosla, starring Sadhana Shivdasani, Manoj Kumar and Prem Chopra. The film was a hit at the box office. Woh Kaun Thi was one of the most scariest Hindi film of that time. The script is tense, interesting and twisted, at times so much that there isn't a possible solution one would offer. The writers try to lead the audience to one particular prediction, but the movie is still highly unpredictable. The movie is aided by some melodious songs composed by Madan Mohan and sung by Lata Mangeshkar. The song shayad ‘lag jaa gale phir ye haseen raat ho na ho’ is about 50 years now and has been and would always be an all time favorite forever, for all years to come. Splendid performances by Manoj & Sadhana and certainly haunting tale from Raj Khosla.

Mahal is a film directed by Kamal Amrohi and starring Ashok Kumar and Madhubala. It was India's first reincarnation thriller film. The film was included in the British Film Institute's list, "10 great romantic horror films". The movie was a groundbreaking supernatural suspense thriller and one of the earliest known films dealing with reincarnation. Mahal became one of the biggest box office hits of 1949 in India and paved way for Indian gothic fiction.

4.PIZZA

Pizza is a 2012 Indian Tamil thriller film written and directed by debutant Karthik Subbaraj. Pizza tells you a story of a pizza-delivery guy who gets entangled in a story of horror, love and deception. The first part is a juxtaposition of initiation, life and horror. While the second half is where it gets horrid, severe and mind-blowing. The performances of the main leads was great and well maintained too. Special effects were at peaks along with the background score. The climax was great revealing all the twists and turns in the story.

This movie has raised the standard among all the horror movies which have been produced and released in India till now. It is something our film industry never produced before. The beauty and horror of this film will stalk you and will capture your mind. The story revolves around God Hastar and his greed for wealth. This is a period film which is based on pre and post-independence period. As the movie progresses the story becomes more gripping and fascinating. There are no big faces in this movie. The actors have done their job brilliantly. There are no big actors in this movie still it made stand out among other horror movies. The score of the music is composed by none other than Ajay-Atul. They have done their job brilliantly. The background music helps the story to move in right direction and make the plot for gripping. Visuals are astonishing, stunning and marvelous which helps the movie to go with the flow.

6.MAKDEE

This is an excellent movie not only for kids but also for elders. This movie runs around two about 10 years old identical twin girls and a myth in the village. One sister in simple and the other one is naughty. The myth is about a Churhel (Evil Soul) in the village. The naughty sister teases & make fun of the other one but when the other one falls in a serious trap, the naughty one plays with her own life to save the other. This is a fun filled movie. A pure and healthy fun and also gives a good message to kids in the end. The songs are lovable. Particularly  kids will enjoy the movie. The acting of the girl artist is excellent. Shabana Ajmi is there in a different role. The direction of the movie is great. A must watch for sensible cinema viewers.

The Conjuring is a 2013 American supernatural horror film directed by James Wan and written by Chad Hayes and Carey W. Hayes. It is the inaugural film in the Conjuring Universe franchise

A very effectively mounted fright fest, played extremely straight, with very good performances. This movie is hugely enjoyable, genuinely scary horror flick. This is a horror film where a pair of suddenly clapping hands gives you the heebie-jeebies, and James Wan doesn't cheat with his jump scares.

A young couple moves in to an apartment only to be surrounded by peculiar neighbors and occurrences. When the wife becomes mysteriously pregnant, paranoia over the safety of her unborn child begins to control her life.

5 Scariest Haunted Dolls other than Annabelle

We all know about Annabelle. Star of 3 blockbuster movies, this creepy doll can make the dead scream from fright. Nothing to worry about her though, as she is safely locked up in the Warren’s Occult Museum but she is the not only haunted doll who is hungry for a soul.

1.   Robert the doll

The doll belonged to Robert Eugene Otto, an “eccentric” artist. It was a gift from his grandfather. Otto developed an unhealthy relationship with this doll he named after himself, carrying it everywhere and talking about it in first person. As he grew up, he started blaming it for his all the mis happenings in his life. His school friends have said that they had seen the doll appear and disappear at Otto’s room window. After Otto’s death the new owner of the house and the doll, Myrtle Reuter, said that she heard footsteps and giggling sounds and she even change its facial expression. The doll currently resides in the East Martello Museum where it continuous to cause mishaps to those who disrespect him.

2.Elmo

 Elmo doll, based on the popular character Elmo, was a very successful toy. This doll, owned by James bowman, was part of the ‘Elmo knows your name’ propaganda which was programmed to speak the owner’s words along with few other phrases. Everything was fine till the bowman changed it batteries. In a sing song way, the doll chanted “kill James.” Yikes!

3.Pupa

 Pupa was cherished by her owner, who often claimed it to be alive and can talk, until she died. The new of the doll placed it into a glass cabinet. Apparently, the doll hated to be contained. There were knocking sounds heard from the cabinet, changes in position of the doll and a subtle change of expression on its face. The legend has it that once the cabinet was opened to be cleaned and there was “pupa hate” written on the inside in childish handwriting.

       4.Mandy

Kept in a separate case in Quesnel museum in British Columbia, Mandy the doll does not play well. Her lamb is often seen out side the case and the visitors have often claimed that her eyes followed them. Her owner had given up the doll because it cried at night.

Also known as Letta me out, this doll is owned by Kerry Walton. He had found it while exploring a deserted house in Australia and had brought it home. From then on strange things began to happen. Household items shifted positions, scuffmarks on the floor. His children complained of constant nightmares and claimed that doll could talk and move around on its own. The dogs became around the doll too. According to Walton, the doll is possessed by the spirit of a doll who had drowned many years ago. Whenever he tried to sell it, he was not able to physically get it out of the car.

Hello witchlings! What do you know about "witchcraft"?

Let me dig deeper into the area of interest which is "witchcraft " which, in a broader sense it means the practice of magic, especially black magic; the use of spells. It is belief in magical abilities and usually performed by a group of witches or it may be solitary too depending from culture to culture.

What comes in your mind is something like magic spells, sorcery,voodoo hoodoo and stuff like that or harry potter i guess who saves everyone from evil by quickly waving a band and reciting incarnations for producing magic instantly but which unfortunately can be possible in fiction only.

Some biblical interpretations may be, Micah 5:12 expresses that witchcraft, as specified, will be eliminated among those of Israel. Deuteronomy 33:8-10 refers to the Levites' use of the Urim and Thummim and various forms of sacrifice as instruments of divination to determine guilt and innocence in law cases.

The word "witchcraft" derives from the Old English wiccecræft, a compound of "wicce" ("witch") and "cræft" ("craft") – Online Etymology Dictionary.

However the true existence of witchcraft is blurry and hazy but it can be found all over the world through different means.

In a modern context religious practice involving magic and affinity with nature, usually within a pagan tradition.

Witch hunt on the contrary has arisen in fear of individuals who were suspected to have associations with the devil and were practitioners of witchcraft which according to the masses brought mayhem and disaster. One of the most famous incidents of witch hunts is the Salem Witch Trials dated back to May 1693.

Witchcraft is a popular element in of course pop culture and cinema, which gave birth to several delightful pieces such as the Happy Potter series along with several others such as Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
