Oh, absolutely. It was all done knowingly. They couldn't risk a huge portion of the fanbase tuning out halfway through the final season. There's a reason that the more explicit denials didn't really start until the pre-release interviews and ramped up from there. Idk, maybe because he was actually good to Will? And even when he wasn't he always apologised and admitted he was in the wrong? Or maybe because Mike truly understands Will maybe better than anyone else (except for maybe Jonathan)? Maybe they've been best friends for years and their relationship isn't toxic? Maybe because it's actually one of the healthiest, if not the healthiest relationship in the show?

I'm so happy that Noah criticizes the writing of Will more and more openly, we should honestly praise him for that.

However, I'm afraid that the non-bylers will completely ignore everything else he said (like the part about the epilouge guy not being meaningful either) and turn it into another reason to yell "the ship was always the problem, you should be happy with the representation you got."

The problem isn't that Will deserved better than Mike, it's that he deserved better than the entire fucking plot that he was given.

People shipped and continue to ship byler because we literally wasn't given anything else in Will's entire arc except pain, yearning and suffering. And then we were made fools of for wanting a payoff for it. And I'm sure Noah was hoping for a payoff as much as we did. You can encourage him to be mad and critical toward the suffer brothers and their writing and still continue to love byler and everything we as a fandom created together.

mike cannot say "i love you" to el, even when she is breaking down crying, begging him to just say it.

he can say "i love you" to el after being encouraged by will's speech to him in the van. will's speech to him about will's romantic feeling for him.

mike cannot say "i love you" in response to el's feelings, he can say "i love you" in response to will's feelings.

mike can only say the words when inspired by will's love for him -> mike feels loved the way he wants to be by will's feelings for him -> mike is in love with will's feelings for him -> mike is in love with will. and he doesn't even know it. canonically.

that's why they didn't address the painting.
