Leah caught the ball on her knee and bounced it a couple of times before launching it back his way. “Oh? That’s good- keeping busy and active at work is best, I can’t imagine having a desk job. Sitting all day……bleh. How do you like the sports centre?”

“I completely agree,” he said, as he jogged backwards to put himself in position for where the ball was heading. “I can’t think of anything worse.” He volleyed the ball with his fist back towards her. 

“The sports centre is great, but it’s become less popular recently. When I was a kid, it was the place to be, but I guess kids these days are more into their technology. Ha! Listen to me! I sound like my grandpa!” He laughed to himself with a shake of the head.

Leah scooted forward to intercept, slowing the ball with a knee before kicking it back to him. 

“I don’t hear about the centre having many events these days....are they still doing things, or has it just....stopped?” she asked, eyeing him as he moved. “That might be part of the problem, there isn’t as much going on that kids want to go to, y’know?”

“Mmmhmm….it’s a good day to be gently indulgent, I think.”

She nodded at his agreement. “Plenty of time to work, and then just enough time after for a good long shower, which is at least as wonderful, don’t you think?”

“Gently indulgent… I like that,” Trent said, trying out the phrase aloud and in his head. It was a nice concept, one he might have to practice more. “A shower will most definitely be in order after working on the yard. It’s good work, but it’s hard and quite literally dirty.”

He chuckled, shaking his head. “But a lighter load with two sets of hands, surely.”

Leah smiled fondly. “It’s a nice idea, isn’t it? A little less.....overwhelming than taking a whole day to indulge yourself.”

It would be nice to help Trent out. He was good people after all. “I mean, of course a shower is in order, but it’s a reward of it’s own kind when you’ve been working hard, even if it is a lighter load with two people. Kind of....meditative...”

“With chile?” Leah asked hopefully. “And cinnamon? It’s so good when you make it like that….”

So good, and so unusual. You didn’t get something so fine at a cafe or a coffee shop- just in the kitchen when Iris was feeling indulgent.

Iris hummed, quite pleased with the idea. “Let’s do that. A little kick to kick off our evening, hmm? We can come back and break in the pillow pile, even.”

She drifted towards the kitchen, only to stop in the doorway and eye the boxes. Neatly labeled, but still - boxes. “…of course, we haven’t unpacked the kitchen yet…”

That might be a tiny problem.

“Oh yes please,” she hummed, closing her eyes just to imagine it. She followed Iris, eager to help, and blinked at the boxes. 

“....ah. Well....nothing we can’t handle!”

Leah grinned and did a gleeful little dance of joy. “Oh yes, Iris, please?”

There was nothing so glorious as Iris’ special homemade hot chocolate. It was worth doing extra chores for, and definitely an excellent way to christen the new lounge pile. 

Iris chuckled, pleased with the - admittedly expected - response. She made very good drinking chocolate, thick and indulgent and sometimes just a little spicy when she felt a need for some kick. But how to make it tonight, was the real question, their first cocoa in the new house… “Any requests?”

“With chile?” Leah asked hopefully. “And cinnamon? It’s so good when you make it like that....”

“Oh yes, I’m not behind on anything. I just…you know. Came out with plans that got waylaid by a better idea, and since I’m not causing any harm by giving in….here I am.”

His surprise at her offer was kind of cute. Like he wasn’t expecting an offer of help. “I’ve got the time,” she promised. “Six thirty?”

“I can’t blame you, it’s a beautiful day,” Trent said. “You’ll notice I’m hardly inside studying or anything of the sort.”

Still, he appreciated the offer tremendously, giving her a warm, appreciative smile for it. “Six thirty sounds good. Still plenty of daylight, not too hot to work, and time to get dinner first…”

“Mmmhmm....it’s a good day to be gently indulgent, I think.”

She nodded at his agreement. “Plenty of time to work, and then just enough time after for a good long shower, which is at least as wonderful, don’t you think?”

Leah grinned and put her things down. “Yeah, sure, let’s so that,” she agreed. “It’d be nice to just mess around a bit.” She moved away from the path so it was less likely another bystander might risk a headshot. “No job yet?” she asked, making sure her hair was out of the way.

He used his knee to bump the ball up above his head and caught it easily with two hands. “Nice!” he said, jogging backwards to put some distance between them. It wouldn’t be much fun if it was little more than passing the ball back and forth. He stopped a few paces back, figuring that if it was too easy, he would just move back more with each successful catch. 

“Job? Oh, I actually work at the gym and the sports centre,” he said, tossing the ball to her in an easy arc for their first pass. “When I said I do anything active, I meant in career too!”

“Heck if I know, but I’m sure you have one.” She poked him playfully in the side. “Make it dramatic, and I’ll even buy you dessert.”

The look he’d given her was worth it all on its own, even.

“How about I show off my ‘pirate routine’ by robbing you blind, and treating myself instead?” Danny deadpanned.

“Jeez, I’m not a showman, you know. I’m not gonna sing and dance for my food.” He should have known. Any friend of his captain’s would definitely have a catch. Although… it was hard to really take offense, when he was already eating what she’d paid for.

Leah chuckled at the threat. “Well, you could try that. It might be fun. I’m not a pushover, you know.”

She offered him a small smile. “I don’t mean to offend. I know you aren’t a dancing monkey, Danny. Just teasing.”

“In theory, I’m sketching out some plans for new projects and maybe doing some bookkeeping. In reality, I’m having a snack, drinking coffee and enjoying the weather,” she admitted. “You want some help in the garden this evening? I’m free tonight.”

Free even of Zircon, who was with Iris for a little day trip.

Trent smiled, amused at the in theory verses in reality. Ah, but he knew the type of day. He got less of them, these days, but he did like them. “It sounds like the more enjoyable option, if you can afford it.”

He paused, processing her offer, a brow raised. That… well, that would be very welcome. A surprise, but welcome. “…I’d like that, actually, if you’re sure you’ve got the time to spare…?”

“Sunning, cozy evening snuggling, rainy day lounging…..the possibilities are endless.”

Was she being dramatic? Yes. Was it fun? Also yes. Was Iris making that face at her that always made Leah laugh? Yup. 

She gathered up an armful of pillows. “Lead on.”

Iris wrinkled her nose with a little chuckle, shaking her head. “Very well…”

She took a fair bit of the soft pile and headed back for their sunning-spot-to-be. It really did have lovely possibilities… “All the better with a nice mug of cocoa, you know.”

It was never too hot for hot chocolate.

“So far it seems to be pretty good. He hasn’t tried to exploit it for extra treats either, which was a concern.”

Leah spread her arms wide in front of the pillow heap. “Pillows are life, my dear Iris. Soft, comfy, easy to accessorize with and available to coordinate with any kind of decor.”

Iris resisted the urge to comment on him being a good boy, lest he overhear and come running. Besides, she was soon occupied being amused by Leah’s theatrics. “I think life is a bit overselling it, but you make some good points. Let’s see about moving some of these to make a proper sunning zone.”

“Sunning, cozy evening snuggling, rainy day lounging.....the possibilities are endless.”

Was she being dramatic? Yes. Was it fun? Also yes. Was Iris making that face at her that always made Leah laugh? Yup.

Leah grinned cheekily. “I didn’t know doctors had days off. I assumed your species just slept under your desk and never left the clinic,” she teased, stretching back out and rolling over onto her stomach. “So what else are you up to today, aside from going for a run at a decidedly un-runlike time of day?”

“It’s only a bad time for a run if it’s too hot,” Trent said, chuckling at her teasing. “And I am fully prepared to spend my entire day outside, honestly. My garden is in desperate need of attention for precisely that reason - too much time at work. Well, relatively speaking. What about you?”

Leah nodded. “Fair enough. I hunt a fair bit, but I do some taming as well, and that can be lucrative. And handy if you need backup out there.” She watched him with the ball. “Soooo……ball and tourney combat. Interesting combination you picked. What else do you do?”

He’d heard that there were people out there who tamed monsters, but he had never tried it. He was more of a punch first, ask questions later kind of guy. That made it difficult to befriend monsters. 

“Anything active that I can,” he said in response, continuing to kick the ball up. “Hey, speaking of which, you don’t wanna play catch or something, do ya?”

Leah grinned and put her things down. “Yeah, sure, let’s so that,” she agreed. “It’d be nice to just mess around a bit.”

Leah chuckled. “The one and only, yeah.” 

At his suggestion, she laughed outright. “Yeah…yeah, I like the sound of that. But only if you do your pirate routine for me next time, hmm? You’ve gotta earn your meal.”

Danny gave a wry smile. “Yeah. The one and only.” 

He took a sip of his drink, only to nearly spit it out at her next sentence. “…My pirate routine?” he questioned, lowering his voice on the word ‘pirate’ out of habit. “And… what exactly does that consist of, again?”

“Heck if I know, but I’m sure you have one.” She poked him playfully in the side. “Make it dramatic, and I’ll even buy you dessert.”

She nodded, tucking her legs under herself and shifting to face him. “I have snacks too, if you want some?” She still had some fruit, and a few cookies. She had been too distracted by basking in the sun to finish them yet.

“So are you off today, or just taking some time?”

Trent eyed the potential offerings with a thoughtful hum, before getting himself a slice of apple. “I’ll take you up on that, thank you.”

He smiled a bit, settling a bit more comfortably before answering her. “I actually have the day off, if you can believe that. Fortunately, I have some things I can do to keep myself occupied.”

And finding Leah unoccupied, where he might spend a few moments catching up with her in a different situation, was more than welcome.

“It’s going pretty well. We started with dinging it every time I took him outside. Then, when he would paw at the door, I’d go ding it before taking him out. When he rings it, he gets a treat when we go outside. It’s working so far.”

She nodded eagerly and turned back towards the hall. “Follow me to the MOUNTAIN OF FLOOF!”

“So long as it doesn’t turn into him dinging it every few minutes just because he wants to go play, I think you’ll be fine,” Iris said, laughing at Leah’s exclamation.

Not because it was an exaggeration, oh no. It was very literal. Leah had pillows piled high in the other room, stacked into quite the little mountain. “So many pillows. I will never quite get over the amount of pillows you have.”
