Hey! So I'm starting my freshman year in a couple of weeks and at this point, I intend on majoring in business. I'm kinda freaking out, cus I basically have no transfer credits from high school and there a lot of pre-reqs for the business school and I feel like I should have most (if not all) of my GER's fulfilled by the time I apply there as well. So my question is, what classes should I be taking my freshman year with that intended major? Thank you in advance!
Don’t freak out!!! You’ll be fine, I promise. I’m sure you’ve seen this, but here’s a link with all the information on applying to the business school:http://mason.wm.edu/programs/undergraduate/admissions/requirements/index.phpSo if you look there, you’ll see you need junior standing to apply to the business school, which means you’ve got more than enough time to get everything done. Most people apply to begin fall of junior year, though you can start second semester sophomore year if you have 54 credits by then. Additionally, GERs don’t need to be done by then. Sure, you want to have a lot of them done by then, but you’ll still have room in our schedule to take those classes after you start the business school. As for your first semester, I would recommend you take 5 classes so you stay ahead on the number of credits, but take some easy ones so as not to overwhelm yourself. You’ll need a freshman seminar, so that’s one. Try and take one without the writing requirement if you qualify for that (150 not 150W) and that will make your life easier. Then I would recommend taking math 106, elementary statistics, and with Delbos if possible. The class is super easy, fills the math GER, and one of your business requirements. I’d also recommend microeconomics, Econ 101. It’s a pretty straightforward lecture class, GER 3, and another business requirement. Then there are some classes that fill 2 GERs, so maybe take one of them. I’m actually taking THEA 333, southeast Asian folklore performance, which is supposed to be real easy and fills both GER 4b and GER 6. There’s a lot more though that fill 4 and 5, just check banner and the course catalogs (there’s a lot in the anthropology department). One of those would be a good option for you. Then I would say for your last class, take any GER that interests you. Intro to creative writing is easy and a GER 6. Intro psychology as a physical science is a good option for GER 2. (There’s psych as a social science but don’t take that bc you’ll have to take Econ for the business school anyway and that’s GER 3). Intro to astronomy is another good GER 2. I never took contemporary moral issues but people tend to like that for a GER 7. Or if you need to fill your language requirement, that’s probably a good option for your 5th class. Yeah actually that’s probably your best bet. So ya that’s what I would recommend. The one thing you don’t want to do is take a class that doesn’t fill a GER OR the business school. I know a lot of them sound interesting but you should definitely save those for later if you have time and space, because you don’t want to set yourself back in your very first semester. And then second semester, keep up with GERs, language, and more business requirements. You'll be fine! And try to keep your gpa above 3.0 to get into the b school. (The classes I've recommended are easy and you should definitely have a good gpa with those, and you can stalk rate my professors and ask around for more recommendations, too).
