The war on leeches, Tumblr strikes back

Last summer one of my kids got a leech at the river. I have swam here in the Ozarks forever and never even heard of a leech here. I removed it and took pictures of it on a table. All by itsself. I posted this here. Today I see its been flagged as porn. So here's to "naked leeches on a table" genre. Come on Tumblr. I don't know what your software thinks this looked like, perhaps that's for the best, but your porno ban is making Tumblr suck.

Btw your software doesn't block porn! At all. But it does block leeches. Anybody that's turned on by leeches should probably go to work for Congress. Or a law firm.

When Anthony Planakis was going through the New York Police Academy, they told him to write his interests down on a little card.

“Beekeeping, of course I put that down,” says 54-year-old Planakis, who is a fourth generation beekeeper. “And the very first job, the sergeant comes right up to me and I just look up and go, ‘Hey, Sarge,’ and he goes, 'Bees?’ and I go, 'Yeah, where?’ 'Harlem.’ And I go, 'Cool.’ That was it, that was the first job I handled,” he says.

And that’s how he became the department’s unofficial beekeeper starting in 1995, earning him the nickname Tony Bees. Planakis has been handling hives for 40 years and keeps them in his backyard in Queens and on a property in Connecticut.

“Whenever I’m working a swarm, I hear nothing around me,” he says. “I mean you can have a jackhammer running down below and I wouldn’t even hear it. I’m in the perfect world now. Actually that’s the only time I feel safe. I’m never scared, never afraid. So, uh, I think it’s in my blood.”

My girls are taking advantage of rare 66° weather in January to get about. You can see they are getting rid of the dead and buzzing about. We filled the sugar water jar this morning. Its about a third gone. My hive is strong, but its my only one. . . So I'm feeding them. Hopefully next spring I'll pull off a couple of splits.
