They're really eating up the sugar...

I have been filling the feeder at the top of the hive with sugar water syrup (5 lb of sugar with water to make one gallon, basically a 1:1 mix by weight). This helps them accelerate their baby-bee-making process. Since I put on the second super, they've been sucking it down big time. I filled it a week ago and today I opened the top it was bone dry. Not only that, but the area where the syrup was supposed to be was full of bees! Usually when filled with syrup, the bees can't get into the chamber, but with the syrup gone they charged in and started exploring.
When I started pouring in the syrup most of the bees backed off, but as soon as I stopped they zipped in and started drinking up. They looked like drunks in a bee bar. About a dozen wound up floating in the syrup, but I picked them out one by one with a twig and set them down. They seemed fine.
After 15 minutes of mucking around with bees flying around my head, I realized I was not wearing my bee suit. Usually I don't put it on just for changing syrup, but this turned into a much bigger, bee-er ordeal. No stings, though... ;-)
