what does feminism mean to you?
Intersectional feminism, to me, is the uplifting, empowering and total equality of all women, all around the world. This obviously varies from country to country, from tackling issues such as 'rape/lad culture', victim blaming, domestic violence, destroying gender stereotypes, sexist dress codes and the clear wage gap to give a few examples, to getting girls into education, preventing underage marriage/pregnancy and eradicating the practice of FGM.
Being an intersectional feminist, as a straight white privileged female, this is to also understand the struggles and importance of all women in society, especially the uplifting of LGBTQ* women and BAME women.
Feminism also fights for "men's issues", such as allowing more equal paternal/maternal leave, allowing boys to be feminine and express their feelings in society more and with the extremely high suicide rates amongst men, this is very important.
Day to day, i like to think that feminism is being kind and supportive of all females and empowering each other. This can be commenting on instagram posts or celebrating each other's achievements. turn the 'you can't sit with us' to the 'you can sit with us'.
It's also important for women to realise that we are deserving of more, we need equality and we need it now. Intersectional feminism, to me, is showing that women are capable of doing whatever men can do, on an equal playing field.
My favourite feminist quote comes from Rupi Kaur, 'what's the greatest lesson a woman should learn? that since day one. she's already had everything she needs within herself. it's the world that convinced her she did not'
Finally, feminism is not an insult, or a bad/dirty word. Intersectional feminism should be practiced by all in order to make the world a more fair and equal place.
