a/n: this fic has been something i've wanted to write for a while now! it's still not done, but i wanted to give you guys a taste of what it's going to be about. let me know what you think about it! i'll try to get the full fic out as soon as i can:)
You didnât know how long youâd been running for. All you knew was that you could not afford to stop â not when five men were swinging their swords to provide you with enough time to escape. You had gone much deeper into the forest, dry leaves crunching under your feet as you ran. Unfortunately, you were unable to see the web of roots jutting out from the ground due to the cover of the nighttime, which led you to trip and fall to your hands and knees. Ignoring the pain, you rushed to pick yourself back up. However, one look behind you and you knew you were too late â he had already caught up to you.Â
The man in front of you advanced slowly as he brandished his sword, the moonlight reflecting off it making it seem even more menacing.Â
Dammit. You were going to die.Â
General Jeon was right. You were, in fact, just a girl with no skills or knowledge regarding self defense and fighting. All you could do was run per Minghaoâs orders, and clearly you were no good at that either. You shouldâve never accepted General Choiâs mission in the first place.Â
Whimpering, you crawled backwards in a futile attempt to get away from the barbarian who had chased after you. âPlease,â you exhale shakily, âI am only a mapmaker. Killing me is of no use to you. Please!â
You feel the ground around you, desperately trying to grasp anything that could be a makeshift weapon. Coming into contact with a hefty rock, your fingers immediately curl around it and you hold it out in front of you. In a last ditch attempt at survival, you throw it towards the attacker with a weak cry. Your heart sinks when he dodges it easily with a small step to the side.Â
Youâre hysterical now, heaving and choking as sobs wrack through your body. Your tears obstructed your vision, but you could make out his figure growing larger and larger as he stomped closer to you.Â
Please, you beg silently, Minghao, Junhui, Chan â anybody, please. Come save me.Â
The mercenary now stands right above you, his sinister smile making you sick. Accepting your fate, you squeeze your eyes shut as you brace yourself for death by his hand. You hear the swing of a sword, but the pain never comes. Instead, it is followed by two thuds, one quieter than the other.Â
Opening your eyes slowly, your blood runs cold at the sight that greets you. General Jeon stands ahead of you, and at his feet lies the body of your assailant whose head is no longer attached to his body. You gasp in equal parts shock and fear, unable to take your eyes off his severed head.Â
âGet up.â General Jeon hisses, irritation drawn all over his face as he shoots you a withering glare. âWe risk our lives fighting for you, and here you are laying pathetically on the floor. As if you were not useless enough already.â
Perhaps itâs the adrenaline from a near-death experience that allows anger to overcome your exhaustion. You stand, rage bubbling up inside you from his harsh words.Â
âYouâre too cruel, general. I did not ask for any of this. Being sought out by General Choi, going into enemy territory, traveling with you and General Kwonâs men â none of it. Especially not your disrespect.â You fume and take pleasure in the way his eyes widen in silent fury. âI am grateful you appeared before that man could take my life, but remember that that is what you are here to do: protect me. Do your job, and I shall do mine. The sooner I am to be done, the sooner we will be able to return to our base.â
âWhy, you little bratââ The cat-eyed general cuts himself off as he takes hold of your collar, pulling you close to him. âI shouldâve let you die when I had the chance.â He seethes, hot breath fanning your face.Â
You stare back at him defiantly, too prideful to admit that you were filled with fear. His gaze is intense and does a splendid job at conveying just how much hatred he harbors towards you.
âGeneral.â A voice interrupts from a couple feet away and Wonwooâs head whips around toward the sound. You exhale in relief as Minghao comes into view. âThe rest of the men have been dealt with. We should move ahead when we have the chance.â
Huffing angrily, the general turns back to you. He manages to let you go, shoving you backwards in the process. The force of the shove sends you stumbling back and you fall once again. Wonwoo couldnât seem to care less as he walks away from you and Minghao and deeper into the forest in search of the other men who had come on this expedition with you.Â
Minghao approaches you, crouching down to your level. âAre you alright?â He asks, straightening out your collar that had been left wrinkled from General Jeonâs harsh grip on it.Â
âSplendid.â You mutter in response, fatigued now that the whole ordeal was over. âI feel like death.â
âYou look like it, too.â Officer Xu chuckles as he straightens up and holds out his hand toward you. âUp, now. We must get going if we do not want to be ambushed a second time.â
Gratefully, you grab his hand and he pulls you off the ground. You walk alongside him in silence, and youâre grateful he doesnât bring up what just happened between you and the general. Soon enough, you spot the rest of General Kwonâs men as well as General Jeon, who is staring off into the distance with his arms crossed firmly over his chest. General Kwon takes note of you and Minghaoâs arrival and picks up what is left of his belongings off the floor.Â
âLet us go.â He says solemnly, clearly displeased that he was not cautious enough and had been outsmarted by enemy forces.Â
You offer a curt nod and follow the general as he walks ahead, Minghao to your left and Chan to your right. Glancing behind you, you see General Jeon trudge along. Still aggravated by his previous words, you quickly face forward and speed up in an attempt to put some distance between the two of you.

laylaâs laying down next to him in the back of the taxi, her eyes shifting around nervously. jakeâs leg is bouncing up and down as anxiety courses through his veins. layla had slipped and fallen down the stairs while he was home and her sharp whining whenever she walked afterwards made him uneasy. so, he was quick to call up the nearest vet clinic and book the soonest appointment for a consultation.
heâs really, really worried though. laylaâs never had any bad scares like this one, so heâs not sure what to expect. what if itâs worse than he thinks? what if they tell him laylaâs broken a bone? what if layla has to go through surgery? oh god - jake thinks he might throw up.
heâs interrupted from his thoughts as the taxi driver stops the car and announces theyâve arrived. thanking the driver, jake exits the car and gulps nervously as he surveys the exterior of the clinic. it feels ominous.

âuh⌠i have an appointment at 11:30. for layla.â jake responds.
âawesome, i see you in our calendar. please hold tight while i let the vet know youâre here.â she smiles kindly, but it does little to ease jakeâs nerves. still, he manages a tight-lipped smile and curt nod in response.

jake watches as someone emerge from the back, looking at a clipboard in their hands. âlayla?â
he stands up right away, prompting layla who had been laying by his feet to do the same. âyes, thatâs us.â
you look up at the source of the voice and send him a pleasant smile. walking towards him, you reach out your hand and he shakes it, but not before quickly swiping his palm on his jeans. ânice to meet you. iâm dr. l/n, and iâll be taking a look at layla today. how about we head inside so i can take a better look at her?â
jake nods earnestly and gently tugs on laylaâs leash to have her follow him into the consultation room in the back. once inside, you ask if he could kindly place layla on the table - a request he readily complies to. youâre impressed at how little he struggled given the fact that layla is a fairly big dog. clearly, he was strong. and maybe kind of cute, too.
âso,â you begin, âwhat seems to be the issue?â
âshe had a bit of a bad fall and sheâs been limping and whining a lot since then⌠iâm worried she mightâve broken a bone or something like that?â jake explains as he runs his hand comfortingly through laylaâs fur.
you nod as he speaks, reaching over to assess any damage. after checking her heartbeat with your stethoscope, you flex her hips, gently press on her legs, and check on her paws.
as you do so, laylaâs continuously making noises of discontent. initially, you had believed that her right front leg was causing her discomfort since sheâd barked sharply when you touched it. however, sheâd done the same thing for every other limb youâd touched as well. smiling, you turn your attention to her owner.
âi donât see anything wrong with layla. her legs are fine, iâd say the shock of the fall is probably what made her respond like that. us people tend to coddle our pets a lot when they get injured, and dogs especially like that attention so they exaggerate it to make it seem worse than it is.â
jake is dumbfounded. âso youâre saying layla was just being dramatic?â
you smile apologetically. âyes⌠i know itâs not the news you were expecting, but thatâs a good thing! means sheâs not injured.â
youâre right, jake supposes. but that means i brought her all the way here because sheâs a drama queen?!
you note the way jake sighs heavily, and it makes you want to try and console him by making his trip to the clinic seem somewhat worthwhile with basic medical advice.
âhowever, i would recommend putting her on a bit of a diet. she seems to be just a little bit over the ideal weight, and that can cause unnecessary strain on her joints.â you explain and jake nods, hanging on to every word coming out of your mouth. âafter all, we want layla to live a long and healthy life, donât we?â you coo, reaching out to ruffle her neck.
jake smiles. cute.
wait, what?
he takes this chance to finally look at you. heâd been too occupied previously with worry that he hadnât been able to actually register what you looked like. now, he can see that you are, in fact, cute. you look around his age, and heâs impressed that youâre a vet this young. you suit the scrubs, but he wonders what youâd wear outside of work.
you pull away from layla and jake snaps back to reality. heâs glad laylaâs okay. still, he sternly faces her and points his index finger toward her snout. âalright missy, youâre going on a diet starting today. consider it punishment for scaring me like that.â
chuckling, you turn to face him and he mirrors your action. thereâs not much left to say, so he thanks you quickly and leaves the room, closing the door behind him. you stay since you have to log laylaâs information in your computer. as youâre wrapping up, you add one more thing in laylaâs âadditional informationâ section.

jake silently mourns on his way back home. again, heâs glad laylaâs okay. he really is. but he had to pay an extraordinarily large amount of money just to be told that sheâs fine. and a little fat.
he glares at layla, who looks back at him with sparkling eyes. his heart melts at the sight, and he sighs as he pets her. jake thinks of you and the fondness in your eyes as you petted the same fur moments prior. maybe something good did come out of his visit to the vet.
suddenly, he gets an idea. he paid a lot of money for this consultation, so he could be a little greedy. as a client, he could ask for your number, right? after all, what if something truly serious happened next time? heâd rather skip the formality of booking an appointment through the website and speak directly with you instead.
so, he pulls up the clinicâs information and calls the number on their website. a girl â likely the same one who welcomed him in â answers and asks what she could do for him.
âhey, i was just at the clinic for an appointment with my dog layla. i hope this doesnât sound weird, but do you think it would be possible to get the number of the vet who saw layla today? just in case anything happens to layla again. you know?â
jake physically cringes as he speaks. way to not sound weird.
âuhm⌠one moment please.â the girl responds. jake hears whispering on the other side of the call.
what he didnât know was that you were right next to the girl on call, sorting through some paperwork before you saw your next patient.
âdoctor! laylaâs owner is calling and asking if he can get your number..?â your secretary whispers.
you whip your head towards her, not believing what you heard. laylaâs owner? the cute, fluffy hair guy?
she looks as giddy as you feel, giggling as she raises her eyebrows suggestively. laughing at her, you give her a thumbs up and sheâs quick to bring the phone to her ear again.
âhello? yes, the doctor said thereâs no problem. do you have something to write with? okay. her number isâŚâ
you smile to yourself as she recites your personal number. a bell rings throughout the clinic, notifying you of your next patientâs arrival. you greet them and lead them to your consultation room and as you close the door your phone buzzes.
unknown number: hi, this is jake. laylaâs dad. thanks again for the help today. if you donât mind, iâd like to take you out sometime?
you bite your lip to suppress your grin. quickly, you reply.

but ofc heâs a teenage boy with pride so he has to act nonchalant

you deflate a little at his response (barely, but sunghoon notices and immediately feels super guilty) before perking up and asking why heâs not in uniform
he says he has a meet this weekend that he has to train for so heâs not going to school
you suddenly remember that the reason he quit figure skating during high school was because he got seriously injured to the point where he could no longer compete
so you urge him to not go to the rink today
âahaha sunghoon you look a little sick though? are you sure you should be skating? itâs going to be so cold haha you should stay home haha youâre sickđđâ
âwtf are you on let me go i need to go skateâ
this goes back and forth for a while until you get so fed up you blurt out âi canât let you go because youâre going to get injured this meet!â

1. his crush (!!!!) is asking him to hang out one-on-one but
2. he really does have to go train bc this meet is a qualifier for nationals
but when you ask him âpretty pleaseđĽşâ heâs a goner. who cares what punishment his coach gives him
âsure, but iâm only going for the puppies and because you said youâll buy food. not because of you. at all.â
you donât care that heâs being so dismissive of your presence and happily grab his arm to run towards the bus stop
since youâre in front dragging him, you donât see how red the tips of sunghoonâs ears turn at seeing and feeling your hand on his wrist
your visit to the dog cafe gets cut short when sunghoon starts sneezing and sniffling like crazy
turns out heâs allergic to dogsđ
you feel really bad cause why didnât he tell youđ
you then go to a tteokbokki place instead and buy a meal for the two of you
all the while youâre still trying to convince him to not compete on saturday

disheartened, you finish up your food and you both begin heading back home
while youâre walking to the bus stop you spot a photobooth and you drag sunghoon towards it
sunghoon looks so unimpressed and continues to sport an emotionless face even as you start the timer so youâre the only one posing
but to your surprise as soon as the last picture is about to be taken he puts his arm over your shoulder and holds his hand up to your cheek in a half heart

you end up printing two copies even though sunghoon says he doesnât want one (he really does he wants one more badly than you do)
you put yours in the front pocket of your backpack while he places his copy in his wallet
after you guys get back home youâre laying in bed when you blink and youâre suddenly back in the freezing cold creek water
looking around you dumbfoundedly you realize youâre back in the modern world
you start to panic because you canât feel your legs anymore and youâre really really cold and the digital watch is still dead andâ

fearfully, you look up at the screen on the side of the building
you sob when you see the headline is the same: âpark sunghoon passes away on new years after falling from a buildingâ

Huffing angrily, the general turns back to you. He manages to let you go, shoving you backwards in the process. The force of the shove sends you stumbling back and you fall once again. Wonwoo couldnât seem to care less as he walks away from you and Minghao and deeper into the forest in search of the other men who had come on this expedition with you.Â
Minghao approaches you, crouching down to your level. âAre you alright?â He asks, straightening out your collar that had been left wrinkled from General Jeonâs harsh grip on it.Â
âSplendid.â You mutter in response, fatigued now that the whole ordeal was over. âI feel like death.â
âYou look like it, too.â Officer Xu chuckles as he straightens up and holds out his hand toward you. âUp, now. We must get going if we do not want to be ambushed a second time.â
Gratefully, you grab his hand and he pulls you off the ground. You walk alongside him in silence, and youâre grateful he doesnât bring up what just happened between you and the general.
