Downtown Prairie Town
Downtown walks amid the stone sidewalk and graffitied alleys, Red Hot Chili Peppers blaring over the outside speaker in this suffocating heatwave, pulses of hot air brushing past my skin in the prairie valley town where time never stops and we all keep moving towards something greater, always out of reach over the blazing hot horizon. It’s somewhere but never here, where the old decrepit brown brick buildings from decades past that housed a long-gone possibility now overlook the streets and green valley of people getting by on Irish pub beers or hard drugs. Architecture always holds memories – In this downtown area I picture myself as a teenager causing chaos with my friend, running up and down the stone streets of towering buildings and falling apart bridges, dreaming up where we might go one day, stealing swigs of Jägermeister from kind strangers. I stayed here, stayed still as if time stopped. As if there aren’t ghosts of my past selves floating through these streets breezing past me, handing me memories to keep.
