The sequence of Faramir riding to his doomed mission while Pippin sings like an angel and Denethor massacres a charcuterie arrangement will never not absolutely slap. What a cocktail of emotions. My heart is a cherry tomato and suffers the same terrible fate every time I watch it
I went back and watched the scene where Fearne and Ashton discuss what to do with the shard and there’s some things I want us all to remind ourselves of:
Fearne explicitly says “if I do have any say in it, I think it should go to you. I don’t know if I want it.” And goes on to say that she feels Ashton is meant to hold both pieces.
Ashton says they know that Fearne would miss them if something happened to them (this is NOT in the context of the shard, but the mission overall) and thanks her for it
Then they say “it’s nice to feel love for people. I love having you…here”
When Ashton does float the idea of them taking the shard they say “I need you to promise me that we’re going to find a way to make it happen if we’re going to do it”
When discussing the plan, Ashton continually uses ‘we’, showing that he has always considered this their plan. Together. With equal say. And she can easily say no, Ashton would have accepted that answer. It’s specifically an “IF” question.
Ashton asks Fearne explicitly that if it goes wrong to “Please try and save my life. I’m not lookin’ to die”
This is explicitly not a martyr attempt
Ashton says he trusts Fearne more than they trust the others.
In regards to the plan, they word for word ask “Are you okay with that?”
Fearne responds “Yes I’m okay with that.”
There is no pressuring that goes along with this question whatsoever. Ashton outlines their idea for the plan, and then asks point blank.
He then apologizes for putting this on her.
Ashton also tells her “if it’s not okay it’s not your fault”
Ashton expresses that it’s nice having something to lose again, “So hopefully I won’t fucking lose it…again”
Other moments worth noting:
in the scene in Percy’s laboratory, Ashton says that “[they]’d like to feel safe…for once” when discussing how they’d like it to just be them and Fearne.
When Ashton says “just fucking do it. It’s never happening anyway. This is the one you get” before kissing Fearne, they are talking to themself.
After getting kicked in the face and yelled at, Ashton immediately tells Fearne “that’s probably fair” holding no anger or resentment and validating her feelings as much as they could in their current state.
It was not manipulation. Fearne was not coerced. There were no double meanings. Ashton was straightforward as always. It wasn’t a recklessly planned or naive decision, they both felt this was the right call. It was not a martyr attempt either, Ashton did not want to die. But they felt this was the right call for the mission, so they stepped up and put their own neck on the line.
Ashton was being himself in a very stressful and gut-wrenching way, but it was not malicious or twisted. It was just terrifying.
Just some thoughts on Ashton's choices tonight...
That was a lot, and I'm seeing ppl feeling a lot of different ways about it (and all of those are definitely valid feelings after this roller coaster)...but what else were they gonna do?
Everyone agreed that the shard was either going to Ashton or Fearne and Fearne had just told him she.didn't.want.it. Plus, in 4 sided dive this week, Ashley explained exactly why she/Fearne was afraid to have the shard. Yes, they 100% should've told the group what was happening and planned better. HOWEVEVR the last time everyone was talking about the shard, most of the group was kinda pushing Fearne to take it so she and Ashton could be emperor and empress.
I think Ashton had the wrong motivations for the most part, and it was risky as shit, but with Fearne adamantly not wanting the shard, I get it. Also, it's a very in-character choice whether you like that character trait or not. I personally loved the big move that even Matt wasn't expecting.
It was a HUGE swing, just like Vax running after a dragon alone, Grog pulling from the deck of many things in the last moments of a campaign, Jester trying to pull one over on a powerful hag using a cupcake and some magic dust everyone else had forgotten about, or Caleb pulling out the beacon for the Bright Queen. It's not like Tal is the first one to take a big dangerous swing that could've ended badly for everyone. He's not even the first one to make a big swing like that with no real plan after step 1: do the thing.
All of those moments go down as memorable and sometimes even amazing once they worked out/the stress level was down, and I think this one will too.
Side shout out: That druid-cleric healing tag team work from Ashley and Sam was some of the smartest/most resourceful DnD I've seen at their table. They really pulled it out and did the impossible with a huge assist from Aabria.
I also haven't been this stressed over a DnD game in years, and never for one that I wasn't playing in. I can't WAIT for next week!

BAHAHA fearne steals from ashton not once but TWICE during the intro!!!
The fact that Fearne was actually upset when she found out it was Orym who stole the spyglass from her makes it so obvious to me that the pick pocketing with Ashton is a love language. When she first realized it was missing, it seemed like both Ashley and Taliesin assumed Ashton had it, and when he confirmed he didn't have it, that's when Fearne started to actually care. Fearne can steal from anyone, but only Ashton can steal from Fearne and I'm HERE FOR IT! I'm feasting on crumbs, but I love seeing their dynamic develop!
You’re just fucking great.
So I'm positive this isn't remotely what's gonna happen but let's all just imagine: Brennan was brought in by Matt to GM Calamity lore. What if Brennan is bringing Matt in to GM Night Yorb lore??
Catching up on Dimension 20's Adventuring Academy and in the episode with Matt he talked briefly about Orym and his storyline. I'm more and more convinced of my theory that the solstice/Predathos stuff isn't Bell's Hells endgame. Or at least not in full. It's gonna be the elemental rifts stuff that has been building since EXU.
I also still don't think the assassination attempt on Keyleth had to do with the moon. WHAT WERE THE MOTOVATIONS?! Why draw the ire and attention of one of the most, if not THE most, powerful Archdruids to moon stuff when [as far as I can remember] we don't know she was even remotely interested in Ruidus? Especially attacking when she had homefield advantage?
I think it's also gonna tie in Ashton's backstory stuff. If all of this turns out to be correct, it's been great misdirection and story arc planning from Matt.
So in the newest trio of Legend of Vox Machina episodes, do we think the journey through the asshole was purposefully pulling Stargate imagery? Because that shit looks JUST like when they go through wormholes and I know Neal Acree worked on that franchise too. I think I've also seen the cast mention Stargate one or twice in like Talks Machina or 4-Sided Dive.
Anyway....it reminded me of Stargate imagery is all I'm saying.
Can I talk about the Swamp Boy for a moment? Because I love that Umbrasyl's involved in Ripley's hunt for the Vestiges because a) it keeps him more involved I the main plot and makes the confrontation between him and the party more personal, but also because b) he's kinda dorky.
Like, I understand Thordak's point, I'm on his side here (what a sentence). Umbrasyl is a dragon, why does he need a sword or a bow?
But... but... look at him!
When he first gains Mythcarver, being a quadruped, he holds it with his tail like he thinks he's a Dark Souls boss!
It's adorable!
Next time we see him the sword is strapped to his forelegs with a chain?
That can't be comfortable. Also, he sure didn't put that there himself. Ripley, was that the best you could for him? Like, I know she doesn't actually care, but this is so disrespectful.
Also I appreciate Mythcarver's efforts to grow a few feet for Swampy after shrinking down for Scanlan, but Umbrasyl is still a dragon and it's strapped to his leg. It's doing nothing!
This week, Ripley brings up how powerful he'll be with the Titanstone Knuckles, a set of gauntlets.
Gauntlets. Gauntlets?!
How is he going to wear them, Anna? He doesn't have hands!
And now I can't shake off the image of what it would have looked like if Umbrasyl had actually acquired all of the Vestiges. I'm sure he would have found ways to strap them to his body.
He would have walked up to Thardak and gone "look who's more powerful now" Just... covered in trash he can't actually use.
It would have been glorious.
