Southern Pacific train carrying M3A1 Stuart light tanks past the Grove Street Pier, 1943.

These would have most likely been on their way to fight in the jungles of the Pacific Theater. Though lightly armored and armed, Stuarts proved to be invaluable in jungle environments due to their light weight and manueverability. They provided much needed armored support to U.S. and Allied forces in places where heavier tanks simply could not go or would have been logistically impossible to deliver in adequate numbers.

MUNI Double-Ended PCC Cars -- 3 Photos These photos were taken by Roger Puta on August 24, 1967. At that time San Francisco MUNI had some ex-double ended PCC in its fleet, i.e., they had been reworked into single ended cars. The cars were built by St. Louis Car Co. in 1948. Note that the doors are at the corners as opposed to at the front and middle for a single-ended PCC. Car 1014 is showing its new rear end, sans headlight and roll sign. MUNI PCC 1015, a L TARAVAL 46th - ZOO car at the West Portal of Twin Peaks Tunnel.

Caption: “CSS&SB [South Shore Line] Pullman built 13 at the Randolph Street Station in Chicago, Illinois on June 27, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 13 was built by Pullman Car and Manufacturing Company in 1926 as a 60 foot coach with Pullman-style smoking compartment. It was rebuilt in 1946 at which time a 17 foot section was spliced into the middle, creating a 77 foot car and increasing capacity from 56 to 80 seats.”

I will never quite understand how they managed to splice in 17 feet in the middle without any long-term structural problems.  I understand that there were some railroads that really needed new equipment, so they went for a list-ditch effort and a quick fix - but some of these cars (and splices) lasted in service ANOTHER 40 years without serious problems.  That’s pretty darn amazing.

Pure Santa Fe, from the GP20’s to the trailing boxcar. I don’t know about the rest of Santa Fe’s territory, but in ChicagoLand, GP20’s were the backbone of ATSF’s four axle fleet. Here’s two of them about to roll under the Rock Island, on their way to B&OCT’s Barr Yard.
