Romulus and Remus,Virgil - The history behind the names
One thing I love as a big history nerd about the latest episode is the newest name reveal.
Remus.
Because, and I’m sure some of you know about the legend as well, Romulus and Remus were a pair of very famous brothers. Their story is deeply connected with the founding of ancient Rome.
According to the legend the two brothers both wanted to create a legendary city, but were arguing about the location. In the end they both founded their respective cities on two neighbouring mountains and Romulus build a wall on the border between them. Remus had no regard for the limitations his brother had created and continued to make fun of the wall that was supposed to keep them separated and out of his brother’s territory. At one point he jestingly jumped over the wall.
In response to Remus’ mockeries… Romulus killed his brother.
Remus died on the day Romulus officially founded the city he named after himself: Rome. He was literally the first Roman.
This founding legend can be found in many ancient texts, one of the most famous ones written down by the well-known Latin poet Virgil.
