this, more than anything, alice understands completely and totally. she knows she's probably being selfish — the amount of people who would kill for the life she's been given is high, and she has the gall to complain about it. A GILDED CAGE IS STILL A CAGE. “ i understand. ” she presses her lips into a thin, near forced smile. “ i want to be a musician. travel, write music. that kind of thing. turns out i'm a better trophy than anything. ” alice sighs, beginning to fidget with the ring on her left middle finger. “ sorry to unload this on you. i just don't get to talk about this much. ”

the air smells of fire and earth ; a coldness has settled into the land. the constant threat of winter storms swirl as the grey clouds build upon landscape. the stables a place of warmth , and he is grateful to always find escape within those four walls. there's an unease within the walls , family fighting family as there's the reminder of power , greed , and the undercurrent of history that weaves through ever so gently.

' not too busy for you , for lucy - ... mistress bingley ' jamie hanging upon good manners as he addresses her , though his tongue is warm with words , ' it's true that i must visit other lands in a few days time but ? ' he then reaches out for the reigns which are in her own hands , ' i'd rest easier knowing that you had a horse that was in good health ... it's getting colder - and i'm not about to take chances with either of your health '

he nods towards the stables , ' do you have some time ? i'll have a look now ' kindness is easy with those who have the same sadness hidden beneath gaze , the memories that etch at the corners of eyes that each day one fights against. there is strength within it all , an understanding when recognized by another. ' or would you wish to perhaps spend your time with other interesting company ? ' a hint of humor to words as he knows that there is nothing like the quite respite from such entertainment.

alice leads her dear lucy towards the stables, eyes flashing between jamie and the space behind her — just to ensure she hadn't been followed. for all her family knew, she was having a real, true emergency. the youngest bingley wasn't known to lie, but she did so to see him. one hand holds the reigns, the other the skirts of her dress as they tread. she ties lucy up, and resumes the earlier behavior of twisting her ring on her finger. “ might i confess something to you, jamie? ” she asks, glancing behind him again, JUST TO GUARANTEE THAT THEY'D BE ALONE.

once she's deemed it safe, alice reaches out, gently squeezing his forearm as she offers him a soft smile. “ lucy is quite alright. i came to see you. ” she admits, clearing her throat and glancing down for just a moment. cheeks tinge pink and she looks back up, letting her smile bloom. IF ONLY HER FAMILY COULD SEE HER NOW! luckily for the both of them, they have curled up in their inn for the night, believing alice to be on a very important errand. she already spins a tale in her mind, something that would allow her to return.

“ i was spending the evening with my mother. it was . . . overwhelming. ” those who understood each other did not to use such intense descriptors — she had not spoken in depth about her family, and yet he understood. it pained her to think that someone so kind as he experienced such heartbreak as she had, and yet it makes her happy to know that he understands. no one else seemed to. “ i'm sorry for misleading you. i promise to make it up to you somehow. ”

their travels are long , their days , far too short , and their adventures , abundant . from dangerous encounters with unknown creatures , to lost tombs , to secret discoveries of hidden paths and spectacular views , sebastian and @worthfuls are seeing the vast beauty of skyrim up close and personal . now they traipse along streams , the bubbling brook by their feet a gentle reminder of the peace found in the wildnerness . OF COURSE THEY DISRUPT IT WITH THEIR GIGGLING — the two tumble into the water , hand in hand , and end up soaked , laughing , and shivering . just a slip up , but nothing a few hours by a fire can't fix . he kisses her back when she leans in for a peck . ❝ we certainly are the type , ❞ he admits with a smirk , reaching to pluck branches and dirt from her skirt . ❝ are you scraped up at all ? THE WATER WILL MAKE US COLD — we need to sit by the fire and warm up before it gets to be too much . ❞ still holding her hand , squeezing her fingers in his own , sebastian guides alice up the bank and around a large rock formation as they head back towards camp . they duck past flittering torchbugs and dragonflies on the way , soon reaching the crackling fire surrounded by their supplies . sebastian's horse , frost , stands guard nearby — sebastian greets him with a pet to his nose . ❝ next time we fall into the water . . . let's be near an inn . or a city . somewhere warm where we can buy new clothes and curl up in a bed after . ❞

“ i think i'll be okay. ” she takes his hand, standing up to finally exit the water. alice was fine at first — but the breeze has set in, and she's cold now. the fire will be perfect. cuddling up to him will be perfect. thankfully, their camp hasn't been disturbed. while sebastian starts the fire, alice plaits her hair and digs through their things for some dry clothes. “ we might not be able to buy new clothes and rent a bed but i think curling up with you will be satisfactory enough. ” alice grins, holding out a dry shirt and pants for him to take. once they're in his hands, she turns back to the tent, quickly slipping out of the sopping wet dress she wore in favor for another simple garment, this one maroon instead of green. her old clothing is laid out to dry, somewhat near the fire but far enough away, just to get enough heat but not a dangerous amount. she likes that dress. having it catch on fire will not do. “ that's better, don't you think? ” she asks, sneaking behind him, arms gently wrapping around his. “ what if we stayed up later tonight? it's so clear. we can look at the stars before we retire for the night. ”

M. well, don't let me stop you.

he leans back in chair , a smile a movement away as the soft glow of a huge hearth in the great hall casts shadows upon their features. the conversation had been pleasant enough , not that jamie struggled with such a thing. there was an ease in his presence - a softness that perhaps stemmed from the belief that the world while cruel had so much goodness to offer. his fingers reach for a crystal glass , and he then nods towards the dance floor.

' i'll only stand up if you offer me your hand for the first two dances ... i'll admit that dancing is not my strong suit , i always felt that two left feet was something i was born with , an inheritance of sort ' his eyes round as they are creased when his smile grows. jamie then clearing throat , ' there is something to be said for liquid courage is there not ? perhaps you will be kinder on me than most dance partners have been ... ' a pause as he lifts the crystal to lips and takes a generous sip of whiskey , pooling warm in stomach as he leans forward ever so. humor sits upon tongue and never wavers

' though i do fear what my terrible footwork will do to yours ' a frown appears as brow creases , ' miss bingley i ask for your kindness and your forgiveness for such a thing if we are to stand up '

it is then when he sets glass down and leans his head upon chin , red curls accented by the shadows that dance , and the embers that are thrown from hearth. ' if you could be doing anything right now what would it be ? ' scottish tongue curls around words just so , in this light he looks closer to what one what would've imagined his teenage years to be , though adulthood has settled in - evident in the way he carries self the scars that mark his step into manhood , and battles that he's lived through. / @worthfuls

as a lady of the upper class, she has had significant lessons in dancing. MOST OF IT DIDN'T HAVE TO DO WITH HER BEING A LADY, HOWEVER. it seemed to alice that her mother was more obsessed with impressing those who had titles much higher than theirs. SHE WAS OBSESSED WITH SEEMED MORE WELL OFF THAN SHE ACTUALLY WAS, and her dear daughter was on the receiving end of that desire. while she typically didn't like to admit she could dance let alone actually dance, she's willing to oblige for him.

“ i shall try my best to be gracious. ” she offers him a kind smile, showing a genuine happiness that could only be seen in a time like this — her mother was off elsewhere, trying to impress some rich man into funding her husband's business. her brother was in the same pub, sure, but busy flirting with and failing to woo some blonde scottish girl. SHE WAS CONTENT TO STAY WITH HIM, even if she was most unfamiliar with this kind of environment.

she finally reaches for her drink, something far stronger than she's used to, and takes a drink from it. PROBABLY NOT AS STRONG AS WHAT'S IN JAIME'S GLASS, BUT PLENTY STRONG FOR HER. “ well, i'd be here. you're quite interesting to talk to. ” alice offers him a smile, then stands and holds out her hand to him. an offer to dance, like he'd mentioned earlier. “ and we'd be dancing, if i could do anything right now. did i mention that part? ”

shawky squeezes alice's hand. "you're a good friend to me," he whispers, eyes glowing from behind his glasses, "and i love you very much, alice. you're like a sister to me. a dear, dear sister."

alice glances over her book at her dear tutor, eyebrow raised and head tilted slightly. she still doesn't know what possessed her mother to hire him in the first place — ALL SHE KNOWS IS THAT SHE'S GLAD SHE DID. he was so wise, so knowledgable, so patient. there could not be a better tutor or friend for her out in the world if she searched the whole thing over. “ i love you too, shawky. ” she smiles gently, closing her book around her finger and setting it in her lap. “ why the sudden declaration? you're not leaving me, are you? ”

btw alice can sew like. really well. and knit. if she gives u a piece of clothing she made it is one of the nicest things she can do and means she holds u in very high regard 🫶

@frser : why didn't you ask me? why didn't you come to me?

she's hesitant to respond at first — WHAT IF HE WAS TERRIBLY BUSY? WHAT IF HE JUST DIDN'T WANT TO? WHAT IF HE ENDED UP NOT KNOWING HOW TO HELP? but then she has to remind herself that based on her reaction, he wants to. at least, she hopes he wants to. in the time she's known him, he's been nothing but kind to her. A FELLOW HEART. neither has divulged much of their experiences, but she has the feeling they don't need to. not yet, at least. and for now, alice prefers it that way. she's not keen on spilling everything, just to find out he may not believe her. it's happened too many times.

“ the truth of it is that i didn't want to bother you. ” she purses her lips together, fingers starting to fidget with the ring on her right pointer finger. “ i also wasn't expecting lucy's horseshoes to break this early on the journey. well, at all. and i didn't know if you'd have the time to, and i didn't know if you'd even want, to, and . . . ” she's rambling. she clears her throat, glancing down momentarily. “ I THOUGHT YOU MIGHT BE BUSY. ”
