imo the best way to interpret those âreal people donât do xâ writing advice posts is âmost people donât do x, so if a character does x, it should be a distinguishing trait.â human behavior is infinitely varied; for any x, there are real people who do x. we canât make absolute statements. we can, however, make probabilistic ones.
for example, most people donât address each other by name in the middle of a casual conversation. if all your characters do that, your dialogue will sound stilted and unnatural. but if just one character does that, then it tells us something about that character.
adding to this. the probabilistic framing is great but thereâs another layer: fiction is working under serious time and space constraints. grief in real life might look like eating cereal at 11pm and forgetting to answer texts for a week. you donât always have a week. so characters end up doing things that are statistically rare but emotionally efficient, and thatâs not bad writing, thatâs compression. the name-dropping dialogue thing is still a crutch though, because itâs not compressing anything, itâs just substituting for actual voice work. heightened behavior = often necessary. heightened language = usually lazy.

Having a job is an awesome way to stay hydrated because you get so bored you start drinking water just for a little excitement
The upside to the adhd forgetting that you made yourself a drink thing is thinking to yourself âman I could go for a drink right nowâ and looking to your right and seeing a drink has appeared there. Thank you, past me. I lost you somewhere but you have still provided.

To my 25 - 35 year olds, you've reached the age where people around you are starting to give up on themselves because they think it's too late. Don't let that energy rub off on you. It's not too late.
