who heals the healer? she finds herself applying the balm on the other's wound, following her every demand with quiet magnanimity-- an expression that does not fit istar, for she has never been one to bear anything calmly, especially not trouble. something must have spooked her enough that she would remain close-lipped and serious even after all the bodies have dropped. she isn't one to care about much, but it seems that party members meeting mud and dust face first is not a vision she wants to experience twice.

after a moment, or perhaps two, once the first salve has started drying and the second is being applied with great gravity, the words in her mouth become sound rather than a simple weight on her tongue: "you shouldn't have done that." she looks up, big glowing eyes looking accusingly at the cleric. "let me die next time, yeah? i do it exceedingly well, no need to steal my thunder." @faithchosen

shadowheart is exhausted, strung tight, she can bare the pain with a high head, on her shoulders, trained to do so. but the exhaustion comes with a price, reaching within herself to wield the magic she’s been anointed with is an impossibility. back to the basics, the blast that had hit her body was the least of her problems. meeting the ground, the world had gone sideways and pitch black. her lady would not let her leave not like this not so soon, but it’s soon becoming apparent that istar wouldn’t allow that either.

shadowheart observes her, her behavior unusual. not that istar behaves like anyone else she’s ever met. but the seriousness that her actions drown in seem off. in contrast to her usual self. it’s touching. shadowheart would not want to admit that feeling protected, concerned about, cared for is unfamiliar yet. there’s a string at her heart being pulled. (what a silly little girl, far away from where she belongs. far away from what little family she's found. far awa-) istar is probably right. she shouldn't have. and yet. purple tinted hues meet her glowing eyes. "i did not want to see you hurt." she starts, too honest it feels like burning. her eyes turn to her wound. "besides, i was far too worn out to properly heal any of you, less myself, so i reacted. we can't have you earning all the battle scars." there is a moment of anticipation, of knowing she's say too much. wondering if she is to be punished for an indiscretion like this. but the palm of her hand doesn't hurt. the mild panic dissipates. "you do have my thanks, for this. cleric or not, i do not have the patience to do this at the moment." for myself, she bites her tongue. she does not say that outloud. sits with it then.

To acknowledge the truth, to mention that she was not as infallible as she pretended to be was to question the very core of what she had build her worth on. So was it a surprise when she reacted to offered help not with relief but by tensing up instead? Was it a surprise that even at the most gentle offers she felt the need to scoff and sneer? What was it, if not first instinct for a woman who could not remember the last time kindness had been extended to her for free, who connected kindness with weakness for reasons that even she HERSELF could not state clearly?

And yet — Shadowheart knew her struggle, did she not? She had her own burdens of course but every now and then it seemed that the look she directed at her was not one of pity or mockery or even embarrassment but one of UNDERSTANDING instead. To have your memories taken from you, to meet help with suspicion and hostility, they both could find common ground in their inability to accept anything, no matter how trivial, as matter of fact and so while she continued to speak with a touch of reflexive animosity, she did offer the other a view of her shoulder, dark bruising barely visible under the high collar of her blouse, ever guarded even among supposed friends.

" Does the Dark Lady find it amusing to have you heal us heathens or are you perhaps willing to defy her for our sake? " One could hardly call what they had at camp privacy, but Wren had sought out a more isolated corner of the clearing they had chosen as their resting spot for the night and so she chose to be bold with her questions, to see HOW the other would react, to see if she would take offence or take it in stride perhaps ( and to distract from the way she winced as she sat down to allow Shadowheart to work her magic despite all her needling ). " Is this perhaps a ploy to discover all our weaknesses? I might share those more willingly if you offered me a nice wine first. "

shadowheart does not flinch or cower at such a question but her lips purse. it is second nature to her, having an ulterior motive. finding ways to scheme and get away with what she wants, what shar herself demands of her. this, the party, traveling is no different. but this is different, wren isn't asking to actually know whatever may hide underneath the surface. "you lot are quite irritable already, i gain a well rested and tolerable party if i manage to fix up all of you." shadowheart is annoyed, yes but she uses it to hide any sort of worry or affection she might be feeling. wren is rejecting shadowheart's kindness, like an allergy almost.

oh wren don't you know? shadowheart can't give it so lightly, she can't offer it often. for everytime there are consequences, hides behind the mask of advantage, a healthy party gets the job done faster. lies, and lies and lies upon lies. shadowheart cares. there's a wound to remind her not to.

the softness remains there as she keeps a serious face, there's only so much she can disclose, but two can play this game and shadowheart is quite aware that wren is perfectly able to stand up and walk away should she choose it. "i only do what lady shar allows." a lie, there's the wound to prove it. "-it is her gift after all that allows me to mend. if i was an optimist i would argue she trusts me to carry out her will, any means necessary." she holds out the palms of her hands. smiles a little wider. trying to hide it. "- there's other ways to discover weaknesses, this is just me healing you. and again if i was an optimist, i would think that you haven't found any other way to ask me to share a drink with you. but i am not an optimist." a phrase that hides behind a flirtatious tone. but shadowheart focuses either way. light purple swirls around the injury, her own wound glowing as they undo the bruising and any damage beneath wren's clothing.

THE DROW TWISTS HIS NECK AT AN AWKWARD ANGLE, looking at her through the gauzy veil of his lashes; something devious stirring beneath the surface. There is something witty, insufferable thing he wants to say, and it dangles from the tip of his tongue, caught between his sharp incisors.

Spindly fingers clutch the fresh puncture wound scarring his lower abdomen, but he hadn't asked for help; the red on his hands feels achingly familiar, and reminds him of simpler times, when it hadn't been his own. That tame look on his face feels like a practiced act as he crawls to her, encircling the small of her waist with both arms, entrapping her; vexing, utterly incorrigible.

"Well?" He taunts, the words cloying-sweet on his treacherous tongue, and pushes the jut of his chin against her stomach, flashing those perilous red eyes like a plea, looking like a puppy begging for scraps. "Are you going to heal me, Sharran?" There is a sharpness to his tongue, but it borders on flirtatious.

he crawls and moves in ways that make shadowheart squint her eyes at him. he thinks of her a fool if he believes she will swallow this little act of his. deviousness keeps her entertained, and at this point she is endeared. but she would rather die than let him know of such a fact. he surprisingly does not let her actually take a look at the wound, safe to say it isn't too bad if he decides to put on a show. so.

her hands shift, from being folded over her chest to lifted as to witness what he was doing and then again to frame his face. irritation doesn't begin to cover it. no, this is something worse. and unspeakable. "-i am considering it." the battles they face could be deadly, if they were any less skilled. but shadowheart has trained hard, this is after all what she should be doing. going into the world in the name of shar. carrying out her will as her duty. she does not fluster, not as easily as before. her cheeks and the tip of her ears only slightly pink.

"if a wound makes you pliable, then what do i stand to gain?" she is only playing, running along with his unamusing games. but it's to pass the time. she'll heal him soon enough. she does not know what she wants out of this, just yet. "perhaps if you asked nicely, said please and all that. then i'll heal you."

∘ @faithchosen › [ SUPPORT ]: the sender encourages the wounded receiver to lean against them for physical support.

IT HAPPENED UNEXPECTEDLY. in his attempt to flee from oncoming harm, incantation was uttered, & yet, before he could misty step away from current placement had it all been cancelled out; counterspelled. that's when he feels it, then .. the sudden sharp sting of steel through the flesh of his abdomen; a hand immediately coming to press against open wound that now bled freely ( that familiar sharp, acrid scent of tainted blood flooding his nostrils ). he's turning, then, gaze honing in on his attacker as he utters yet another incantation; creating a gap of distance betwixt them & himself with a quick thunderwave before he's hurriedly retreating in the opposite direction.

the rest of the battle is short ( enough ) lived, all thanks to karlach & lae'zel cleaning up the remaining frontline; gale doing what he can to take care of any outliers, alongside the aid of shadowheart. he's exhausted. nauseated, too. blindly does he reach blood-stained hand for anything to lean on to help balance himself, his other once more pressing tight against steadily bleeding wound. where he expects to meet the solid foundation of crumbling wall, he instead meets a gentle touch as her hands grab 'hold of his arm; his arm maneuvered to rest over her shoulders whilst cleric's own grabbed at his waist for support. he's hesitant for a moment, albeit still allowing himself to be walked away from battle's site ( the others no doubt following in suit ), before he allows for his weight to settle further 'pon shadowheart's body; his brows knitting together as each step jostles another sharp sting.

❝   —thank you.   ❞ comes the quiet utterance of words, his gaze flitting to his companion for but a moment. a pause, & soon does he speak up once more; tone just as gentle as before. ❝   i'm sorry. surely you must get tired of constantly tending to me.   ❞

the fight is as any other, messy, it's only these last few weeks of traveling together that have given the group any sense of advantage or footing over their enemies. shadowheart is familiar to this, spear and shield wielded with expertise. purple eyes are everywhere, from lae'zel to karlach. throwing a quick guiding light it's when she notices gale's retreat. and it's when she knows something had gone wrong.

( what she does not know is when she started caring, and surely it's only momentary, for it is smarter to travel in a group as long as their objectives aligned themselves. but her concern feels more genuine, there's a part of her that is scared that she is over stepping. wondering what She might think of her then. whether she approves or not. )

she acts swiftly, gentle but strong. she's dealt with heavier people, and she isn't weak. she can support him with ease. concern frames her features. she finds a nearby rock to act as makeshift support, attempting not to move him too much. the gratitude coming from him is something she is finding herself accustomed to. her face focused, zeroed in as she lays him down, slowly. the crimson staining everything surrounding the wound and she can't help herself, she looks at gale with an uncharacteristic softness. fleeting, before being replaced with a slight steelness. "i am starting to wonder whether it would be wise to show you a curing spell or two." it's a little mean, sarcastic. it's meant to liven up the mood, as she inspects the wound.

"-i got you, gale. do not move." her palm extends, and her eyes close. drawing in a breath. conjures the smokey purple blackness, followed by a violet light as shadowheart recites the words to close the wound. her own scar glowing once more. matching the intensity, as gale's ailment slowly begins closing, leaving exposed skin where there was once a deep cut. the spell is strong enough to leave her tired, but does her very best to cloud the fact, as she slowly opens her eyes to gale. "hurt anywhere else?" delicate hand on his shoulder, meeting him with an attentive gaze.

her first instinct is to reach for her braid. shadowheart had said it was meant to be a fresh start. (what the rest of the party does not know is that the moment she lightended her hair was her first attempted at reaching out for selune. there's much she does not know, there's much she fears. keeps it to herself.)

"thank you. for the compliment i mean." she starts, voice soft and without it's usual edge. she goes silent then, a pause. looking off to the side, it's been only days since shadowheart made her choice. since she failed shar. "-i'm sure i will eventually feel the same." giving it all up, everything that was meant to be vanished. gone. "for now, i just want answers. i want the truth. and i would have never thought that i would return home like this." it's small, the step she takes in being honest with herself and with elspeth. "if you would've told me that we were closer to being friends than anything else at the start i wouldn't have believed you." there it is, the bite. softer now. playful almost.
