A quick method for creating velvet textured clothing.
First, select the white swatch of the piece that you intend to recolor. If there isnât a white swatch, use a B&W adjustment layer.
On the right side of your screen, right click on the layer to bring up a drop-down menu. Select the, âduplicateâ, option.
Select the duplicate layer, and change the layer style to, âexclusionâ. This will start the base of our velvet or suede-like texture, by inverting the shadows and highlights.
Right click on the layer to bring up the drop-down menu, and select, âmerge visibleâ.
Add noise by going to filter > noise > add noise. This will give your base a bit more texture.
Select the adjustment layers tab, âcurvesâ, and move the two points very slightly as shown. Do not stray towards the middle! We want to stay near the sides of the box, so that we are only affecting the light and shadows. With this texture, my goal is to lighten the base so that it works better for recoloring.
Merge your previous work, and then add a B&W adjustment layer. Merge. This gives us a clean, white-ish base to use for our recolors.
Change the layer style to, âsoft lightâ.
Go to filter > other > high pass. This is the best method for sharpening any texture without getting the pixel halos you get with the sharpen tool.Â
Adjust the opacity of our sharpened layer. Merge. All done!
The final product creates a lovely texture that mimics the sheen of velvet and suede.
