Prompt 8: Using a New Technology

The technology I want to talk about is from my childhood that I still play today and that is the Playstation2 I had. I got the Playstation2 when I was a young child in grade school. I remember getting that system and just playing as many video games that I could before I would be forced to do homework by my parents. This Playstation2 was a videogame system that was very popular when it came out and had so many games that were enjoyable to play. The Playstation2 still to this day has a spot in my life. It has a spot because some days I just go and turn the system on and play games for hours and for weeks without going to one of the newer game systems like the XBOX ONE. Even the Playstation2 had a part in my siblings lives by them playing their video games they had for the system. We had to buy another Playstation2 because there was so much arguing over whose turn it was to play or he has been playing to long between my brothers and I. So for Christmas one year my parents got me a television and a Playstation2 all to myself, while my two brothers had to split the other Playstation2. Lastly my cousin is really into video games so he is one of the reasons that my brothers and I are into video games as well and love playing them because a peer of ours taught us about them.

After a lot of researching i have finally decided what my final research paper was going to be over. I am going to write my paper over what workouts are most effective and best for the success of baseball players. I have found out a lot as i have been researching this topic in order to complete the annotated bibliography. One thing that I have found out is the fact that baseball players should spend a great amount of time doing core workouts. This includes abs and also back areas. This can help bat speed and it can greatly help arms strength as well. It helps arm strength because of the fact that it strengthens your back which then allows you to use your back and your whole body as you are throwing. This really interested me and i was reading it i noticed it makes complete sense. Another that I learned is the fact that Olympic lifts and heavy weight lifting is not too great for a baseball player and also a baseball players health. This heavy lifting can hurt ones flexibility. This then affects there baseball swing and makes the swing tight. When one swings they need to be relaxed and also needs to be calm and loose. This is the same for throwing as well. Also these heavy and Olympic lifts are not good for ones joints. Baseball players are hard on their joints and especially on their elbows. With this being said, baseball players need their joints to be as relaxed and fresh as possibly.

Prompt 9: Using a New Technology

Technology is something that our generation eventually comes in contact at a young age. It seems that children are getting phones earlier and earlier. A technology that was a big part of my pre-teen years was AOL chat rooms. During my sixth grade in school, everyone in my grade started getting on AOL chat rooms and talking to people in our grade. Even though a lot of people in my grade had cell phones, I was only allowed to have a cell phone when I graduated from eighth grade. I was actually the last kid in my grade to get a phone and had to use our landline at our house. Using the AOL chat rooms was basically my way to text and keep in touch with people in my grade. I distinctly remember I could only get on AOL when I finished my homework. Sometimes I couldn’t get on because we had one family computer and I have three siblings. It was a constant battle to get computer time at my house. I would chat back and forth with my friends for hours. I felt especially mature when I would chat a boy in my class on AOL. Chatting on AOL also opened the door to cyberbullying, which I experienced and I think everyone can relate to. I have a memory of a girl in my class yelling at me in this chat room because I didn’t sit with her at lunch. Having a space where kids can talk about anything they want gives them freedom, but it also opens a door to bullying. This girl could chat me multiple times and I couldn’t do anything to stop her. Once seventh grade hit, a majority of my class had cell phones and would actually text instead of AOL chat. Although it seems sad that I didn’t have a phone at a young age, I’m glad that I didn’t. I got to hold onto my innocence and remain a child for a little longer than other kids. Instead of being occupied by a cell phone, I played outside with my neighbors and watched television. AOL chat rooms were a fun part of being a teenager and I find it funny that kids in 2015 would never message each other in chat rooms or e-mail back and forth like I used to.

Prompt 8: Using a new technology

I remember using a desktop computer for the first time ever. I used it for the first time ever when i was about 4 years old or so. The first thing i did on it was I began to click and play around with the keyboard when the computer was not even turned on yet. I thought it was the coolest thing how the buttons clicked whenever i pushed down on them. I would type my name and also phrases into the computer over and over again I was having a lot of fun because I was so young and playing with the n  keyboard for the first time ever. After i was doing this, my dad turned on the computer and opened a Microsoft word document or some type of document that I could type on. I was messing around with it and i thought it was the coolest thing that as soon as I pressed a key the letter that I pressed would magically appear on the screen the absolute second that i pressed it. I kept typing my name into the computer over and over again. I did this until I could finally type it while looking at the screen and not staring down at the keyboard.

The next thing i did was move the mouse around. It moved to wherever I wanted it to on the screen and I could click on anything I wanted to whenever I pressed down on the mouse. I thought it was magic because i had never experienced this in my whole life up to this point.

Prompt 8: Using A New Technology

I chose something a bit different to talk about for this post. I want to talk about my first time experience with my Heelys. Let me tell you that this new creation was the bomb back in the day. In 4th grade you would see everyone rolling around on their shoes to get to class. Heelys were a brand of tennis shoe which allowed the consumer to insert a small wheel in the heel. To get these to work, one would have to either run or walk fast on their toes, then instantaneously switch over to their heels. It would require a balanced position and, with the right amount of force, could send you sliding for about 20-30+ feet. I had a fresh pair that were considered cool looking during my 4th grade year. Not only was it a competition between students to see who could roll the longest without getting in trouble, but the looks of the shoe was a competition as well. All the girls wanted my limited edition style but I was the only one at school who rocked them. One problem, I never learned to use my heelys. The position was impossible for me to get to and I guess my previous fear with falling in roller skates took over. Boy did it kill me that I couldn’t show off my ability to use those beauties. I won’t forget them though. To this day I can’t get on almost anything with wheels. Not even a scooter or skateboard. I got lucky with my bike, which took years to get rid of the kids wheels, but I got it. I won’t forget this experience with a new technology because it was a complete fail. Usually we learn new things like driving or using a laptop, but this was something that never got to sink in.

Prompt 8: Using New Technology

I remember the first day I saw and used a desktop computer so vividly, it seems like it was yesterday. At my elementary school, our class would always walk past this room that was always dark, but you could always see a glimmering blue light within it. Children in preschool and kindergarten were not allowed inside. If you were caught you would get a note home, so no one ever dared to enter. For two years I waited to see what was behind that door causing that blue light of wonder. When that day finally came, and I was able to use a computer, I was immediately joyful. It was like being able to ride in the front seat of the car and experiencing a different view of world, for me it was the virtual world. At the time we didn’t have computers with a graphical interface, so we had to type in commands to do work. So, for hours I would spend time learning and typing in commands to see where it would take me. I was so obsessed my mom bought me a cheap computer when I was in middle school. On that laptop, I taught myself how to code, and create games and mobile phone applications. Till this day, I occasionally think about that day I finally was able to use a computer in elementary school. It felt like finally getting permission to get a cookie from the cookie jar.

Prompt 7: Topics

The main three potential research topics I was thinking about were drunk drivers, texting and driving, and something pertaining to alcohol whether it be what it contains and the effects on the body or the rules enforced on college campuses. These topics were in my mind because I have had some experience or information received on the topic.

Starting with drunk drivers. I feel I have a connection with this topic. I know many people who went out for drinks and stupidly drove home drunk instead of carpooling with someone more sober or calling someone to get them. I also had an accident after prom earlier this year. It wasn’t my drivers fault, it was the opposing woman in the other cars’ fault. She hit our car and when we called the police they didn’t do anything to the woman for causing the accident. They let the woman go when they had her call someone to pick her up. I think this was a poor move on the policemen’s end so it would have a lot of connections for me to make on the topic. I would be able to research statistics on drunk drivers in the U.S. The more difficult part of this topic would be researching the police departments’ rules for situations like this.

Texting and driving was another potential topic that I think I like a little more. I know too many people who text and drive and many people who get into accidents for it. It’ll be a little difficult to find reliable articles on the topic but I can use the Taylor library’s research database to find more in depth information. I like this topic because technology is evolving so much people think that they absolutely need it and it shows that even for a mere drive, people can’t put their phone down. I also think my argument would lead into me talking about the advancing in car models with built-in Bluetooth to connect with phones and hands free calling within cars.

On the other hand, alcohol is everywhere. It’s so valid to say that many people and young people on college campuses have drank alcohol at least once but certain campuses are stricter on their rules. All campuses are strict for underage drinking but many don’t even let the people of age indulge on campus. On Fontbonne’s campus I feel that they have so many resources and seminars talking about drinking on campus. The one’s I have attended have been very informative because they aren’t blind to the fact that it will happen, so they tell you how to be safe about it. This is a good argument but it’ll be difficult to try to talk about every single campus, so I would more than likely compare and contrast two or three different campuses and take a side. I also think what is used to made alcohol is very essential because it’s not very good ingredients and the side effects aren’t any better. The different side effects depend on the person but in the end it’s not a good outlook.

I really think all of these topics have potential but they all have their own difficulties that will put some stress in the process of finding valid information to form together.

Prompt 8: Using a New Technology

I remember the first time I drove a car; I was about 12. It was my dad’s wife and she wanted me to start driving young but up until now I still don’t drive all the time and still have some difficulties with certain things pertaining driving. When I got behind the wheel obviously I was nervous but when I started I thought I was doing well. My first comment was saying that it felt like a video game and she said “yeah, well in this game you only get one life.” Her saying that for some reason has stuck with me and made me be pretty nervous when driving. I caught on pretty fast, with turns and all but now I have a slight difficulty for some reason with turning in driving that I’m working on. This is significant to me because I’m still trying to figure it out and I blame it on not driving that often. I feel that I’m a good driver but could be better. Now in current years, I drive periodically but I still don’t have a license or my own car. People try to say that I can’t drive a car because I’ve never controlled anything which I don’t think is true. They try to compare it to the fact that I can’t ride a bike, which is quite sad but I don’t think I have to ride a bike to drive a car, they’re totally different. I’ve tried multiple times to learn but in a car you don’t have to keep the car from tilting over you have to control it with your feet, your senses and using the other things in the car. This is a technology that really anyone uses when it comes to transportation and I’m still figuring out how to use it but after I start being able to turn more efficiently and parallel park I’ll be taking my test for my driver’s license. I refuse to go for a fourth time to get my permit renewed.

Prompt 7: Topic

I have three topics in mind for my research paper that I have been thinking of but the one that stands out the most to me is education. The other two that I have thought of is lucid dreaming and how you can control your dreams and the second one is concussions with impact sports and how it effects the human brain in the long term. For education being my to the best of my liking I want to find out a few things and also argue a couple points. The first thing I want to research are the top educational systems world wide and see their techniques and what they do that makes them the top systems. Also I want to find out about the United Sate’s educational system and how they organize education for the students. I want to argue how we should use the top educational schools methods and put those methods into our teaching in the United States to better our intelligence and make younger kids more educated and not always worrying about video games and electronics. I believe doing research on this and learning about education will help me with my studies. It will help me because I can learn what other students in the top educational school systems do to learn better, get better grades, and also to develop better study habits in life so I can do better in the future. Out of my three choices I think my favorite and one that I would much rather do the research on is learning about the educational system and seeing how we can use the top educational system’s methods and put them into the United State’s educational system.

Prompt 8: Topics

My three research topics:

1)    Should college athletes get paid? This has been a huge discussion over the past couple of years because some people feel that they should for the fact that the colleges are using the kid’s likeness and images and making a profit off of them from the games and jerseys sold. But other people feel that they should not for multiple reasons but one of them is because they are considered amateur athletes and amateur athletes do not get paid.

2)    Are we taking it too far by blaming fast food restaurants for obesity? When is it individual responsibility and when is it appropriate to place blame? This is also a topic that interest me because I am overweight. I have heard this for a while now that fast food restaurants are to blame because they are they are the ones putting the disgusting, greasy food out onto the market. And when you have people that need some type of nourishment and only have 20 minutes and five dollars, they are going to pick the fastest and lowest costing food which happens to be those food chains like McDonalds and Burger King.

3)    Should the US lower the drinking age to 18? This is another topic that interest me because there have been a bunch of speculation about it. The fact that eighteen year olds should be able to drink legally is a little hazy to me. But I do feel that if I do more research into it, it would bring me to a somewhat clear opinion.

Bullying is a topic that I take seriously and it is something that has been an issue for a long time not only in the U.S., but in the whole world. Physical bullying is especially a problem that is common in schools. Physical bullying happens in high schools the most in my opinion because in that time, everyone is trying to fit in and forming their own groups. I think it will be easier to write my research paper on physical bullying because I’ve already written an argumentative essay based physical bullying. I think images and stories of victims are what represents physical bullying the most. I remember when the story of Amanda Todd went viral on YouTube and Facebook. Even though it was after she committed suicide, it still made more people aware of the affect of bullying. The victims of bullying take it seriously and it causes them to have depression, low self-esteem, anxiety, and may cause them to think of suicide as a solution to their pains. The least I want is to decrease the numbers of physical bullying happening everywhere and not just in high schools.

Prompt 7: Topics

A topic that I would like to research for my paper is about how effective certain methods are in deaf education. Some potential issues that I could come across when researching this topic is that there could be many different methods of teaching when approaching deaf individuals. The four main methods I have came across is cued speech, the oral method, signed English, and the bilingual approach. For all four of these methods there are types of associations that go along with all of these allowing lots of different information about each individual methods. Another difficulty I could come across is not finding unbiased information. This may be difficult because for instance the deaf community believes highly in ASL while hearing people could think that oral would be the most effective method. When approaching this topic one important point I will have to include in my essay is that all children learn differently, because all children learn differently no one method will be most effective for all children.  All children deserve a right to an education but their are several ways to educate children and finding out the the most effective way could be very beneficial but very limited because of all students learning differently. So i may choose one certain type of learning style and go from there to help determine which method I believe will be most beneficial to the certain child. Another thing that I could talk about is how the teacher could incorporate all of these methods into there classroom to reach all students individual needs.

Prompt 7: Topics

Choosing a topic for my research paper is a difficult task. I am really interested in different religions and what they believe in. A topic that I am currently considering is whether extremist groups and cults should have religious freedom. In the media, we hear about these radical groups and the harmful things they do. I would also like to analyze how extremist groups, like ISIS, gain seemingly harmless followers that participate in their radical actions. I would like to research more on this topic and the possible reasoning behind their actions. I think this research topic will have some challenges with finding information. Avenues of inquiry I will research could be the library and trustworthy online sources. A source I could analyze would be the extremist group’s websites or books they have written. Another topic that I have always had interest in is abortion. I have always been a pro-life supporter and would like to look more into the statistics. I know that this topic will have a pleather of information I can look into. I can use many trustworthy sources to back up my reasoning of both pro-life and pro-choice stances. I can also reference stories of people who have had abortions or anyone who had experiences with abortion. I went to the Pro-life March in Washington D.C. last January so I could use my experience as reference also. I think this topic will be easier to write about because I am already passionate about it, and I know there will be multiple sources to take information from. I have never written a paper on being Pro-life so it would be interesting to put my thoughts together into a paper format. I think both research topics are interesting, but it will come down to which topic offers more information.

For my final paper, I have been considering several different subjects of which to research and write upon.

Topic 1 is a study of Superman versus Spider-man, and what it means to be a true hero. The typical assumption being that, because Superman has an almost unlimited set of abilities that therefore he must be the better superhero. But I wish to prove that even with lesser strength, speed, and intellect Spider-man is not only the better superhero, but is the exact definition of true hero through his acts and shortcomings.

Topic 2 The Wheel of Time is a series spanning fourteen novels. Telling the story of five youths and their mission to stop a malevolent omnipresent entity. It is idea that each of the five characters draws from theological elements current and past world religions, and that there personalities and stories are a direct reflection of the characters in the series.

Prompt 8: Topics

One topic that I would potentially like to use for my research paper would be gun control. I would like to research the question should there be a gun control law set by the government? I could use many sources for this paper. One that i could use could be the national rifle association page as well as a page that believes there should be more gun control. This way I could see both sides of the argument and see where both of these sides are coming from. I would like to research the topic of gun control. I feel like this could become difficult because it might be hard to find good sources. Another source that i could use could be a page that states all of the regulations one must go through to purchase a gun, this could be different for different states. Another topic that i am thinking to write the paper over could be stem cell research. I do not know much about this research but i find it interesting and I could find out a lot about it through this research paper that i could write. One source i could use is stemcellresearch.com. This site could tell me all about it and be a great anchor source that I could build greatly off of. One reason this topic could be tough to write about is the fact that I do not know much about it already. But I would like to learn about it. These two topics are potential topics that i could write my research paper about.

Prompt 7: Topics

For my research paper topic I was think about exploring issues relating to Affirmative Action, Gun Control, and Immigration. I will debate whether equality in the workplaces has been achieved versus the continuation of inequality in the workplace. Within that discussion I will if racial equality and balance be achieved in business, education, and military without policies or requirements that promote Affirmative Action. Then I will tackles ways that discrimination can be discussed. For my second topic I will talk about the the contrasting issue of community and police safety versus the right to bear arms. After than I will talk the NRA and their belief in the 2nd Amendment. I will finally talk about the statistic of states that allow citizens to carry guns have higher or lower crime rates. Finally, for my third topic Immigration, I will talk about the realistic limits versus the openness toward people in need and talk about the english being an official language over respect for diversity in language and cultures. Should illegal immigrants be granted citizenship in the U.S? This is a hot topic in the presidential debate which I will discussion the opposing sides. In that question, lies other issues such as letting the illegal immigrants be able to access public schooling and public programs for illegal immigrants. I can also take a pessimistic approach towards the issues by talking about heighten security on the borders. These are the perplexing topics that I’m contemplating on talking about in my research paper.
