With Torch and Spear: Constructing Collage

  Winchester Centre for Global Futures in Art Design & Media is pleased to present the exhibition With Torch and Spear, curated by artist and WSA Lecturer Ian Dawson.

  Titled after Joseph Cornell’s 1950s collage film By Night With Torch and Spear,the exhibition takes this experimental and rarely exhibited film work and Eduardo Paolozzi’s Moonstrips Empire News (1967) as starting points to imaginatively explore the legacy of the collage process and the extent to which it can be used to create non-linear congruence.

  Here, collage is seen not simply as a technique, but an overarching procedure that artists use to rethink structure as a kind of topological relief that invites the viewer to scrutinise layers as if they are plans for an alternative landscape.

  The Paolozzi series consists of over one hundred silkscreen prints pieced together from a myriad of comic strip and popular science imagery. These form a compendium of odd and common things; cutout figures are seamlessly paired with cryptic and colourful linear designs. The evenness of the silkscreen surface ensures that ‘This is collage in its purest form, where it is not merely a technical process, but a principle concerning content’ (Tim Byers).

  These works will coalesce alongside contemporary works by artists including: the 2012 Deutsche Börse prizewinning artist John Stezaker, Marcus Harvey, Chantal Joffe, Ian Monroe, Kirsten Glass, Kristin Posehn, Jack Lavender, Mick Finch, Clare Mitten, Team SHaG, Louisa Minkin, Steve Cooper, Mia Taylor, Danny Aldred and Alexine Chanel.

  This will create a vibrant show that in itself will become an act of collage, offering a simultaneity of dissonance, a polyphonic spree.

  The exhibition is curated by Ian Dawson, whose practice intrinsically involves collage and whose work appears in the major anthology Collage: Assembling Contemporary Art (Black Dog Publishing 2008). Dawson has recently written Making Contemporary Sculpture (Crowood Press 2012), a study into the studio practice of many of today’s leading sculptors.

10 Years On: Art and Everyday Life in Iraq and Iran

This Global Futures Annual Forum 2013 is hosted by Winchester Centre for Global Futures in Art Design & Media (Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton) in association with Ibraaz (www.ibraaz.org).

The two-day public forum will open wide discussions about society, culture and everyday life in Iraq and Iran.  For decades, the Western media have shown these countries as threats to global peace.  This event brings together specialists and professionals in mass media, the visual and performing arts, cultural and social studies and history to examine Western representations of Iraq and Iran.  But, more importantly, this forum offers diverse alternative accounts of real life in Iraq and Iran today.

Ten years on from the invasion of Iraq led by the US and the UK, and in the continuing context of the apparent direct threat posed both from and aimed at Iran, this timely gathering focuses on these countries and the broader regional context in four related and under-examined areas:

Everyday culture and ways of life

Women, power and a changing social order

Media accounts generated within and without Iraq and Iran

Contemporary art and design in the region

Event speakers, along with media including film, fine arts and design, will contribute to a vital and creative debate touching on the related significance of ‘the Arab Spring,’ multiple performances and mediations of politics and identities, the changing status of men and women in these societies in political and cultural crisis, the places of contemporary art and everyday life, as well as the peoples originally from Iraq and Iran now living in, or between, Britain and the Middle East.

In the process, it will take up a politics and an economics of representation: who gets to represent whom? Who gets to represent themselves? Whose representations count, have currency, are circulated, and validated as knowledge?

The meeting over two days includes invited speakers, roundtable discussions and sections for short papers on the four topics outlined above. Allotted discussion time will enable considerable interactive involvement from audiences throughout the event.

Marcus Harvey in conversation with Ian Dawson, followed by book signing and drinks reception: Be sure to join us!

To celebrate the publication of artist and WSA lecturer Ian Dawson’s book Making Contemporary Sculpture, WSA invite you to a conversation between the author and the artist Marcus Harvey.

Marcus Harvey became known for his infamous portrait of Myra Hindley, which came to prominence in the ‘Sensation’ exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, London (1997). Since then he has worked on large-scale work that operates between sculpture and painting. In 2009 he recreated a portrait of Margaret Thatcher out of 15,000 plaster cast items.

Harvey’s commentary on the construction of British social and cultural identity then extended into working with death masks ofAdmiral Nelson and Churchill in ceramics.

Harvey also founded Turps Banana a quarterly publication discussing both the theory and practice of painting written by practitioners.

In Making Contemporary Sculpture, Dawson interviews Harvey and 25 other artists about their practice. These artists include 2002 Turner Prize winner Keith Tyson, 2002 Turner Prize nominee Fiona Banner, Sir Anthony Caro (see 2005 Tate teachers' pack on Caro), two-time Turner Prize nominee (1988 and 1989) sculptor Richard Wilson, and 1998 Turner Prize nominee Cathy de Monchaux.

It is a journey into the world of the contemporary artist, a document that helps describe what it is like to make some of the most exciting contemporary art of today.

Critically concerned with art and design practices of making, thinking and representation, the Winchester Centre actively engages in education and enterprise, exploring the contribution of media, materials and technologies to the improvement of human societies globally.

Our Global Future series encompasses lectures, seminars, film series, special events and one-off conferences and an annual conference, launched in 2012 during September with our hosting (together with partners*) of the conference: Art, Criticism and the Forces of Globalisation. All the papers from this conference will be published in due course on the Third Text website. Selected papers will be published in a special edition of Third Text to be published in 2013.

*Partners in the 2012 Annual Global Futures Conference were: AICA and The Archives of Art Criticism (based at the University of Rennes, France), Tate Liverpool, and the Liverpool Biennial, with participation from other organisations with which we work.
