Three Bathers - Félix Vallotton, 1895
wytr .
[ to her, when eye contact is made and maintained — uncharacteristically inspired in his state of grog — heugh lets crimp his nose, recreates some- thing pleasantly petulant in the face he briefly delivers. ]
( her smile is soft and slow and pleased by the contact, coming after a surprised blink. )
No’ a good day, man?
( running. trainer slipping. falling.
rain water from the gutter? use powers. water cushioning her fall? panic. water is accidentally a block of ice. not soft. face hits ice. ice melts. body hits ground. looks around for help because technically she’s ~winded. )
calm down, sweetheart, grow up

( maybe she should be more accustomed to house guests by now, no matter how unfamiliar they are to her. maybe it isn’t the guests she’s unused to, but the reasons why they’re there in the first place, looking for a place to stay.
una might be different than joshua and ricky, the last to occupy her small apartment, but she is, if anything, that most alike to josephine. she’s been in una’s place, after all. )
I don’t care how long you stay.
( it comes out a little brisker than she means for it to, and she softens. )
Really, don’t worry about it. So long as you don’t flood the bathroom or something, we’ll be fine.
Well --
now you’ve gone ‘n jinxed it.
( she flicks the lamp beside her on and off to busy her pinked, bitten fingers. )
Aside from tha’ -- there any other house rules I should ken?
wytr
— is there a reason you’re just standing there?
( should he be concerned? )
( she blinks out of a daze and does that dance -- the uncertain hands and aborted footsteps of a person who is trying to look busy and fails. )
-- No?
( following the path of rushing, grey gutter water with your Sea Senses™ doesn’t feel like a valid excuse.
but, then again -- )
I wis just followin’ the flow of the sewer water, ken? I’ll tell ya how long it takes tae join up wi’ the ocean when I find out.

( she studies the girl for another moment, like she expects her to say something else. she shouldn’t; she knows that she wouldn’t, were their roles reversed. )
It’s this way.
( half-hearted attempt at baking abandoned, she leaves the kitchen, leads her down the hall. )
It’s not much, but it’s comfortable.
( a double bed by the window and another secondhand comforter; a low dresser she remembers banging against the doorframe when she and lance had lugged it upstairs. a lamp and a bedside table and maybe it isn’t anything impressive, but nobody’s ever complained about it before, either. )
( she throws her single canvas rucksack onto the bed. the soft comforter dips under it, creases spidering out from its dusty bottom. )
Thanks for this. -- By the way.
Rent isnae so easy tae give the boss when you’ve gawn and frozen a regular, ken?
( she laughs, but the tide of it is weak and it retreats quickly. )
I’ll be out of your hair soon, dunnae worry.
You can take the couch or the spare room, if you need to stay. I don’t care which.
( she teeters on the edge of some foreign politeness; nervousness picking the skin at her thumb. she swallows once, uncertain in the doorway, before she deepens her voice and harshens her accent. )
I’ll take a lookat tha’ spare room if it’s nae bother.
*looks at hot girl*
*whispers*: be gay
Remedy: to cure, relieve, or heal.
she’s having more fun than she should be. she blinks once, slow, and her eye- lashes stick together in dark clumps.
the girl swims away, and agatha swims forward. slow. lazy. taking her time.
”Which is why you should probably go back to the Sea.”
she’s joking, but her tone doesn’t say so. in the same slow, careful drawl,
”This is my pool, remember?”
she can't remember the shark theme-tune. the creeping one that's low and deep and filled with dun-duns, slowly getting faster. it would fit if she could remember it, but her memory isn't good under pressure and pressure is agatha making good, slow progress across the pool.
"Ah've reconsidered my position on sharin'."
Ew.
' Uh, thank you, for that… ’
"Dunnae worry. The more you know the safer you are."
