House of X #1 (2019)
written by Jonathan Hickman art by Pepe Larraz & Marte Gracia
Rave Parties at The Cradle
HOUSE OF X #1 has been unleashed on the market and is the start of a radical shift forwards for Marvel’s X-MEN franchise. Apart from giving the X-Men their new logo mark(s), I collaborated with writer Jonathan Hickman on the design system for the House of X and Powers Of X Seriesused the breaker pages within the comic that acts as back matter throughout the series. This is what comics can look like when you put two guys who like design systems in the same room.

Few can withstand the might of the devastating Phoenix. Have you managed to tame the blistering inferno of her T3?
Being revolutionary and starting a new era of X is nice and all… but I would still read the heck out of a throw-back like this.

DANI MOONSTAR READING LIST
Dani Moonstar is one of the very few Indigenous superheroes in Marvel, and more specifically, the only native woman in the X-Men. A mutant with the power of creating illusions based on peoples fears and hopes–and later she gains the ability to create psionic arrows capable of paralyzing people in their fears–she was a founding member of the original New Mutants. Dani has always been a very strong-willed individual, a natural leader, a loyal friend, a caring mentor, and a badass, even after she looses her powers. What is also special is that when she is written especially well, like in her original appearances, she has a voice and story about holding onto her culture and heritage while also making her way through a very white world, and becoming her own person. And it is never a burden for her, but something she draws strength from, something she returns to in times of turmoil and with hard decisions to make… though Marvel has failed at this in recent years. She’s kind of my fictional idol, and I’m not ashamed to say I’ve read pretty much every single thing she’s ever been in. So with that, here’s a list of what I recommend reading, and what I don’t.
Thumbs Up:
Marvel Graphic Novel #4 Origin story of her and the other original New Mutants
New Mutants vol 1 #1-87 + Annuals #1-4 Please consider starting with the graphic novel and then here! Also worth mentioning The New Mutants Special Edition and The Uncanny X-Men Annual #9, when she becomes a Valkyrie
Marvel Comics Presents vol 1 #121 - Of Faith and Fable Mini story where Dani struggles between returning to her people and staying in Asgard with the Valkyries
X-Force vol 1 / New Warriors vol 1 crossover event - Child’s Play This is after shew as first reintroduced to earth in X-Force #28 as part of the MLF
X-Force vol 1 Annual #3 - In Deep Mini story featuring Dani with the MLF, reveals she’s actually undercover
X-Force vol 1 Annual ‘97 - The Last Valkyrie Dani enlists the help of X-Force with Valkyrie matters
X-Men Unlimited vol 1 #43: Keepsake Mini story where the New Mutants regroup to recover Rahne’s stolen necklace from William Wallace
New Mutants vol 2 #1-13 Dani becomes a recruiter for Xavier’s school and ends up adopting a bunch of troubled children, plus David who actually has his shit together
New X-Men (Academy X) vol 2 #1-19 From recruiter to advisor, Dani now teaches full time at Xavier’s and is an advisor to her ragtag group of new New Mutants… until she looses her powers on M-Day and Emma and Scott kick her out of the school 😩
X-Men: Divided We Stand #2 - The Sun Also Sets Nori seeks Dani’s help dealing with all the trauma she’s been through
X-Men vol 3 #15.1 - Hell to Pay Mini story team-up with the X-Men feat. Dani and Ghost Rider save a town from being destroyed by angry demons
All-New X-Men vol 2 Annual #2 - Last of Us, Last of X Dani uses her Valkyrie death sensing powers to help mutants with M-Pox
Meh, it’s Alright:
X-Force vol 1 #67-101 + Annuals ‘98/’99 Unfortunately the series starts to take a turn for the worse not long after the lineup change, but it’s still mostly enjoyable
New Mutants: Truth or Death #1-3 Mini series where the New Mutants meet their older/younger selves and try to prevent Illyana’s death
X-Men Unlimited vol 1 #42 - Fear Mini story where Dani tries to date a rando white guy who turns out to be mutant-phobic
Young X-Men #1-12 It’s kind of hard to give a brief summary of this one without spoiling the entire thing; I’ll just say it’s a lesser version of New X-Men but with a couple good plot twists
New Mutants vol 2 #1-50 This series has its ups and downs that overall leaves it in the meh category, but of all the meh’s, I’d recommend this one the most
Uncanny X-Men vol 5 #12-Present This series continues to piss me off more and more, but I am very glad that after so long, Dani has her powers back… I’d be more glad if I wasn’t terrified she’s about to be fridged
Thumbs Down:
Avengers The Initiative #2-9 I have way more problems with this series than just how Dani is treated, honestly just all in all don’t waste your time
Fearless Defenders #2-12 Dani is literally used as a power-up object for Brunnhilde and not much else, also this series reeks of a man’s idea of what Strong Women should be… points for effort I guess? But yeah way to have a man write your Girl Power all-woman series
Here’s Hoping:
War of the Realms: Uncanny X-Men #1-3 I liked the first issue of this one; a promising start that I’m keeping my fingers crossed will stay that way
The New Mutants by Bill Sienkiewicz from the cover of the forthcoming New Mutants: War Children #1 (2019)
