More concept art for the Feral Predator, by Michael Vincent (@MV_Creatures):
Art of Prey… inner mouth color… this was may favorite aspect to design, wanted the Feral’s mouth to be a vibrant threat display.. once he uncloaks…he very much has no issue being seen…
Referenced Komodo’s, black mambas, elephants, bats, frilled shark, sarcastic fringehead, gelada baboon… no not genitalia… to quote Rick and morty, “no relation”
⬆ Here’s “mamba”…
An idea to make the gum coloration a similar shade as his blood.. but it makes more sense to me that the blood only glows once it oxygenizes in the atmosphere, otherwise it would make for a glowing predator! But for real imagine a bioluminescent mouth display…
Alec’s favorite, would have been awesome if they went with a. Bluish undertone for the whole design which was considered

PREY concept art
Some early concepts for the Feral Predator by Michael Vincent (@MV_Creatures):
Art of Prey part II... back to the very beginning of the gig... when the project went to @thestudioADI, there was already design work done in ZBrush, so marching orders were to go straight to modelling, but I begged to bring it back to pencil...
There's a freedom pencil affords that 3D does not... using the provided design as starting point, the goal was to go wild with ideas, let the initial inspiration flow unabated, with the intention of dialing back after the fact... These were just between Alec, Tom, and myself
The above 2 are what Alec and Tom liked as the starting point to start sculpting... I initially wanted to split the Predator's palate in two, and have the inner jaws take on a radula-like quality, but in retrospect I think it wouldn't fly as yautja anatomy
I thought it would be fantastic if the creature gave the impression of a Wendigo... this was while it was still under wraps that it was even a Predator movie...
...and prior to the character putting on a whole lot more muscle...
This one was way out of bounds... but I do like the inhuman anatomy... I thought this could have been a Yautja "Scout", sent to planets to scope them out before the hunters arrive...
based on the closest thing to Predator in real life, a Gelada Baboon...
This I dont think I turned in - a sketch I did right after Alec called to see if I was available to work on Predator.. an easy yes.. and interestingly it seems to have informed the final design.. I've thought for a while that viper heat sensing pits on yautja would make sense
more scribbles that didn't work... I'm grateful I got to start in pencil, I have such a soft spot for those initial napkin sketches done at the beginning of a film.. where would we be without the Stan Winston sketches...
Some more samples of concept art for the Feral Predator shared by Alec Gillis, Farzad Varahramyan (the full body concept) and Justice Joseph (Spear Gun)
The Feral Predator’s bone mask was a notion that PREY director dannytrs thought would make for a nice variation on the traditional Predator bio mask. tom_woodruffjr and I had the pleasure of art directing an amazing team of concept artists including michael_vincent_art , farzad_varahramyan ,jfields217, the_justice_joseph
Swipe for earlier iterations, including an internally illuminated bone mask. Swipe further to meet the Crucifix Fish. I’ve been trying to find a place for this beauty in a design for years! It had its day here.
The Bone mask started as a cool 3D sculpt by michael_vincent_art , then molded by h2originals , a clay copy created, then detailed by sculptors Joey Orosco, andy_bergholtz and savannahsuderman
We’ve worked with Michael on a few projects and I always have a blast with him. I’ve always loved biologically plausible creatures so any concept artist who enjoys talking about viper sensor pits and secondary faces hidden in plain sight on tigers is okay by me.
Don’t get me started on communicating through pheromones or the difference between squid tentacles and arms. Chemotactility? Not a topic for polite conversation. Thanks to dannytrs for letting us run feral on this one.

When the creature design and armor elements were approved, we made some images to pitch the idea of putting the performer’s head underneath the creature’s, yielding a more arched, animalistic posture for a “wilder” character… I was elated when they went this route…
@DannyTRS had a fantastic vision for a seriously brutal character… we spent a long time on armor before it was decided that the character probably wouldn’t have any… not his style… too much pride…
And fun fact… the Feral subspecies is omnivorous… crushing palate in the back of the mouth yields a diverse diet…
By the way I should specify, we were holding off on color design still, so he is zbrush-colored with markings here and there…Though admittedly the grey was starting to grow on me heheh… Tom Woodruff had a sick idea for a “Grey Ghost” Predator variant…
ALIEN 3 (1992) dir. David Fincher
“When they first heard about this thing, it was crew expendable. The next time they sent in marines. They were expendable, too. What makes you think they’re gonna care about a bunch of lifers who found God at the ass end of space?”
Don’t sneak up on a Predator!
