Shannon stands outside the closed door to Port Observation wringing her hands. She’d known she’d have to speak to Kaidan alone eventually. And it isn’t like she’s scared of him. In fact, it was the exact opposite. She wants to be with him, to talk to him, to just sit with him and be in his presence like she’s wanted all along.
But she doesn’t know what he wants. So she’s here on business.
Finally, she takes a deep breath and opens the door. Only to find it empty. “Huh...” She meanders into the room, steps around the couch towards the large window open to the stars. She can see that he’s started to make it feel a bit like home: a clothing item here or there, datapads and mugs on the coffee table, scattered books and blankets. She smiles. It reminds her of days long gone. She snags a book and continues to the window.
The first time she’d visited him in here, he’d been gazing out into the universe. How often does he find himself at this window? What does he think about? Does he think about her the way she thinks about him when she gazes out her own spaceport?
The door opens behind her, and she glances over her shoulder at the intruder.
“I’m happy to see you’re making yourself at home, Major.”

Shannon takes her time walking down the docks, looking for her new posting. She’d been so thrilled to be sent to the Normandy. The idea of working on the famed Alliance cruiser would cause a swell of pride in the chest of any marine. The fact that Hackett thought she’d be more useful on the ship and not in the Fifth Fleet had at first felt disappointing. But now, remembering its crew and it’s range of missions... It’s more like a gift.
That, and she’d be working under the Commander Shepard.
There had been some confusion, coming from the shared name and ranked. But the Savior of the Citadel had been Jules Shepard. A woman Shannon has admired for a long time. The kind of woman Shannon could hope to be. While the thought of being further compared to the Commander makes her more nervous than she’d like to admit, the thought of being a part of her crew excites her more.
She wonders who she’ll meet first, her mind going over every possibility and outcome as she finally reaches the cruiser in question. She’s... more beautiful than any vid could make her out to be. So distracted is Shannon by the sight of the Normandy, that she doesn’t see the woman she collides with until it’s far too late.
“Oh my God, I’m so sorry,” Shannon gasps bending to pick up the datapads the other woman had dropped. “I should have been looking, I was just...” She trails off once her eyes fall on the other woman’s face. Oh, no. Commander Shepard. She hands over the datapads, doing her level best to seem more put together to Jules. “I was admiring your ship, ma’am. I’m... I’m the new transfer. Shannon Shepard, ma’am.” She’d never live this down.

[um... hi... if anyone missed me, i’m kinda back...]

“Look at my nerd boyfriend, paying so much attention to this game and not me.”
He inhales her soft scent, so familiar and yet utterly new to him. Something about her has changed. Okay maybe not something, but a lot of things. Some he can put his finger on, and others he can’t. But it doesn’t matter. She’s still his Shannon. The woman he fell in love with and wanted to stand beside. Hands slide form her hips to her back, and he pulls her a little closer, his fingers bunching in her tank top.
“Honestly. I had no plans to. I thought you were… happy.” He had hurt her, that’s been more than obvious, and he hadn’t wanted to hurt her more. A small part of him had hoped she had moved on, gotten over him and learned to forget him. Things would be easier that way. No more pain. No more wondering if he should ever tell her that he still loved her. A small groan leaves him, and he buries his face deeper into her stomach. “I’m sorry.”
Shannon’s breath hitches as Kaidan pulls her closer. Her body almost curls down around him, wanting to wrap around him and never let him go. The past several months have been hard on her. Even harder without him by her side. She’d missed his steady support, his silent strength, wished for him in almost every crisis. Having him here now, in her arms again, is almost like a gift. One she can’t believe someone’s given her.
“I... was coping. I thought you had moved on, found someone easier and less likely to go rogue or die on you. Like that doctor you’d mentioned.” She’d hoped for that, anyway. Kaidan’s been through so much. He deserves to be happy. Even if he isn’t with her. But it’s clear now that Kaidan hadn’t moved on. Not really. He’s just as stuck as she is. She strokes his hair, wishing for the umpteenth time that she could just kiss him. Reassure him. “Shhhh, don’t apologize,” she soothes, smiling down at his form. “Besides, you know I’m more of an actions over words kind of girl, Kaidan.”
“ Definitely not ma’am… not that I’ve been checking him out or anything but- he’s aged better than any of us. Is it normal that sorta makes me mad?“
“No, I think it’s normal. I’d be more angry if he didn’t cut such a fine figure. That new armor? Good Lord, Major looks good on him. I think we lucked out this time around.”
He takes one shuffled step and the another, the room spinning beneath his feet as his moves. For some reason it feels as if his eyes are twitching, moving from side to side so rapidly that it makes his head spin and he clenches his eyes shut in protest. One hand sliding free of hers, he gropes blindly for another pillar of support that isn’t Shannon. She’s already ding enough for him. He doesn’t need to force his entire being onto her. it would only make everything harder than it needed to be.
His hand hits a wall, and he lets out a relieved groan. His fingers slide against the surface for a few seconds util he finds his balance, and he lets out a soft sigh. This definitely wasn’t what he expected to have happen. But the warm hands guiding him, leading him through the darkness are reassuring. Or as reassuring as it can get through the pain.
Slowly, he manages to take a few more steps, his hand moving along the wall as he does. With his eyes closed the ship doesn’t seem entirely unmanageable as before, and he gives her hand a squeeze. Another slow step has pain travelling from his heel up his spine to his brain. Gasping in pain, he doubles over, his arms wrapping around his stomach in a desperate attempt to keep himself from falling to pieces.
Chest heaving, he tries not to break down, but as his eyes open and he looks up at Shannon, he can’t stop the watering of his eyes. “Please tell me we’re there.”
Shannon watches him carefully. Kaidan’s migraines give her an uncensored look into how he feels. If he’s okay. Kaidan always keeps up a mask to hide any pain he’s feeling, almost any emotion. It’s to protect himself as well as those close to him. She’s always admired him for it. But it can be as frustrating as it is admirable. She can’t always tell when he’s hurt. When something’s wrong. But when he’s in this much pain... she knows.
And it hurts.
As does Kaidan slipping a hand out of hers. He touches the wall, leading her to believe it’s not personal. She tries to tell herself it isn’t. He’s in pain. He doesn’t want help. It has nothing to do with her. She holds the hand she still has tighter, brushes her thumb over his knuckles. He squeezes back and she can’t help a small smile. Not personal at all.
When he doubles over, she steps forward immediately, hands resting on his shoulders, supporting him as he gasps loudly in the quiet hall. She keeps her hands away from his head and his amp port. “Kaidan?” Her voice stays low, cautious.
His pleading tone, the pain in his eyes... they break her heart. Has she really done the right thing? Or is she just being selfish? Putting Kaidan through all this... is it worth it? “Just a few more steps to the elevator,” she whispers, hand moving to the side of his neck to stroke her thumb over his jaw. “Just a few more steps and we’re there. You’ve got this.”
Shepard's right. Humanity is ready to do its part. United with the rest of the Council, we have the strength to overcome any obstacle. When the Reapers come, we must stand side by side. We must fight against them as one. And together we can drive them back into dark space!

“Yeah... yeah, okay. Aren’t you lucky?”
