YALL WAITED FOR THIS!! @cctypical
AND HERE IT IS! OK so despite the ending of ATA 3 being TERRIBLE in my opinion, there has been a theory on my mind that has been there ever since the 3rd game’s trailer was released (4-5 months ago)
The theory….Of Riley Park’s age..
now you may be wondering, why would that be on my mind?
Well hear me out cause what I’m about to say it is about to make all of yall probably spam my comment section with questions and doubts BUT ONCE AGAIN HERE ME OUT 😭
Riley isn’t an adult…
heck she isn’t even a teen or a preteen…
Riley……is a toddler
Specifically…..3 years old
OK OK HEAR ME OUT ONCE AGAIN!! 😭
why do I think this?? Let’s start with all the evidence!
EVIDENCE NUMBER 1: The Birthday cake
in the first game, There is a part where we have to apply the price of the blabbot to the blabbot toy which leads the phrase “Send my condolences to Kate” (Also just want to mention that this puzzle appears AFTER mourning the death of Kate, after mourning Kate’s death we immediately celebrate someone’s birthday, and who’s birthday could that be if not someone related to Kate herself? Also it’s almost symbolic of how Kate died shortly before Riley got the chance to turn 3 which is HEARTBREAKING 😭😭) and then the tv cutting off and YADAYADAYADA, THEN right after that there appears…a birthday cake, (Also a card on the table that reads “Congratulations! YOU are one year older! Wishing you the best year yet!”) now take note that this puzzle in this franchise is the ONLY puzzle that’s edible or real in a way, for those that don’t remember, we have to do math to collect all 3 candles and place them all on a cake, then the cake melts with the song “happy birthday” playing in the background, then a tape pops up and ya, BUT what most people missed is the achievement that comes with it, the description of that said achievement reads..
“Can’t believe I didn’t get any presents..”
Now tell me, who could be speaking here? Before you say that it could be wooly or Amanda, remember that the tv was shut off when solving this puzzle, the only person in this room that could have said/thought this for this sentence to make sense is Riley herself/themself
Still find it very hard to believe? Nah it’s ok it was like that for me at first too lol
EVIDENCE NUMBER 2: The puzzles itself
What I always found odd about this game is that the devs set up the player to use preschool toys to solve problems…
Things such as: An Activity block (which is a well known preschool learning tool), Train track puzzle, Coloring book, Piggy bank, Weather wheel, Blabbot (a toy robot), stuffed animals and etc
Now you could say that it’s just aesthetic to fit with the game, but if Riley were truly a grown woman/man investigating this, wouldn’t it be more appropriate to use adult investigating tools instead of preschool themed toys? and that’s brings me to…
EVIDENCE NUMBER 3: the UI achievements
These are ALSO overlooked aspects of the game, these UI achievements specifically speak to us like we are in preschool with examples like: “Chugga! Chugga!” “Sleepy time!” “Everything’s your playground!” “Splish! Splash!” “Peekaboo!” “Librarian in training!”
Now with this along with the evidence we have so far, it does seem a bit too strange for the game to be talking/ treating us like this if we are supposed to be someone older…
MOVING ONTO…
EVIDENCE NUMBER 4: The input text response
Notice how almost every response Riley has is always just one word? Like yeah sure sometimes the input text box’s are longer but even so Riley barley uses all of it, most of the time it’s a short word or a bit longer, but it’s never too long to the point of a sentence, And no this was DEFINITELY intentional, this I believe is the devs way of subtly adding in realistic toddler responses when talking, most 3 year olds (especially ones who just turned 3 in Riley’s case) Are still learning how to put two and two together, therefore it makes sense that Riley only says words like “Amanda, Kate, Wooly, Knife, birthday, laugh, cry” and etc, the devs could have easily given us a sentence like “__ ___ ___” but no it’s always “____” or “_______” and like I said, most of the time Riley’s canonical responses don’t fill up the whole box.
What solidifies this for me is when in the second gameplay, when Amanda asks us “What’s your favorite kind of bird?” The devs once again leaves out enough room for the word “Caged” and Amanda responds with “What do you mean?” Now, the devs definitely had enough room to put in “You are caged” but no, they deliberately left room for only ONE word..
now you could just say it’s because they don’t have enough room to fit a whole sentence, but in some cases they do and they deliberately decide not to, and like I mentioned I believe is not for no reason 👀
EVIDENCE NUMEBER 5: Amanda’s…Best friend?
Now this one if from the 3rd game so SPOILERS IF YOUR READING THIS SO FAR ⚠️‼️
In the beach episode, Amanda is struggling to remember a moment where her and her best friend were hanging out by the beach with a specific kind of smoothie, Wooly tries to guess it was a different kind of drink and Amanda disagrees, Then Amanda asks us what kind of smoothie it was, And somehow…SOMEHOW, Riley knew it was a pineapple smoothie, even leaving Amanda happily asking “How do you know?”, There is also another moment where Amanda was struggling to remember what her and her best friend were wearing that day, and Riley once again knew it was sunglasses, and last but not least Amanda was recalling what her and her best friend saw that day, and once a MIGHTY GAINNNN! Riley knew it was a crab and got all of them right,
Now this brings us to Amanda’s flashback of her and this best friend, One thing I noticed (Cause I notice EVERYTHING lmao, I mean this theory took me 5 MONTHS to get together my brain is FRIED) is that the little girl is…significantly smaller than Amanda is, (which we know is canonically 7 years old) almost exactly like the height of a toddler between 2-3 years old,
The things Amanda and this little girl did together all match the things Riley guessed Amanda and her best friend had done before, coincidence? 👀 no..
The little girl in my opinion is obviously supposed to represent Riley…
Think about it, how would Riley know almost everything Amanda and her best friend would have done in the past? How did she know the smoothie was pineapple? How did she know what they saw at the beach was a crab?
These are definitely not just guesses, especially when the devs make us wonder this with Amanda asking us “How did you know?”
If this was supposed to be some random little girl Amanda was friends with, they could have had the little girl be the same height and age of Rebecca and just have Amanda say “A very close friend from school!” Or “My bestest friend ever!” Or heck even give her a name if it’s someone random
but no they have her say
“A little girl, just like me”
That phrasing isn’t random, it’s mirroring, someone who reflects Amanda’s younger self emotionally, spiritually, or literally, But the game makes it visually clear the girl is smaller, meaning Amanda recognizes this as someone younger, someone she’s fond of, someone she protected or bonded with.
And the fact that that girl’s name isn’t mentioned in anyway but is supposed to be Amanda’s best friend is a MASSIVE red flag (in a good way lol)
it’s not random, it’s intentional silence
In storytelling, when a character refuses to name someone, it usually means one of two things:
The person is too personal or sacred to name (symbolic connection)
The writer is hiding an identity that the player is meant to discover
Since Amanda directly calls the girl “just like me” and “my best friend,” leaving her nameless only emphasizes that the girl’s identity isn’t separate — it’s intertwined with Amanda and Riley’s.
It’s basically the game whispering:
“You already know who she is.”
The fact that Riley knew all the things Amanda and this “best friend” did all points to Riley being the little girl Amanda was “best friends” with
now you may ask, “how? This is a flashback when Amanda was Rebecca, there is no way Riley was even alive back then according to this theory”
And yes your right, but that’s because it’s symbolic and metaphorical..
The devs framed Amanda’s beach story like a distant childhood memory to trick us into thinking it was just nostalgia, when in reality, it’s a shared memory between her and Riley bleeding through time, Because Riley’s memories are intertwined with Amanda’s, the devs disguised their connection as a simple story from Amanda’s past, hiding the truth in plain sight.
It’s not that Amanda is recalling a real life memory she had in the past, but more of a…..let’s say, psychic déjà vu
Amanda doesn’t remember Riley as LITERALLY someone from her past, she remembers her through déjà vu, like a lingering echo from another life bleeding into her own memories, Amanda’s memory of Riley isn’t literal, it’s déjà vu, a residual echo from the spiritual link between them, blurring time and memory until she mistakes it for her own childhood.
Ok to put things on simple terms if you don’t know what the heck I just said 😭
Riley’s memories are bleeding in with Amanda’s, that’s the reason why Riley knows almost everything Amanda and her best friend did, because part of Riley’s essence is interwind with the tapes (since we see her literally come back from death and can trigger info by just pissing Amanda off) Riley’s own memories start to interfere with or replace Rebecca’s recollection of HER memories.
so basically that memory isn’t just Amanda’s alone, it’s a fusion between Riley’s connection to the tapes with her compassion and empathy and Amanda’s longing for a real best friend (I hope this makes sense 😭)
EVIDENCE NUMBER 6: The birthday cake appears again
Remember the birthday cake I discussed from the first game? Yeah well looks like it made an appearance again!
It’s the exact same cake from the first game yet smaller
This is the direct silent callback to the empty celebration of Riley’s 3rd birthday, and notice how the cake is kind of in the middle of the table with the 5 dolls surrounding it while in the game we have to place the birthday tape in the center of a ritual circle of 5 candles? And when getting this done, Riley’s birthday celebration tape turns into a memory of Rebecca’s 7th birthday celebration (YALL SEE WHAT IM COOKING UP HERE!? 😭)
When Amanda sets up a party to welcome her stuffed animal friend “Ellie” it’s also a subtle but VERY VAGUE celebration of Riley’s birthday (since we literally see the happy birthday banter on the wall) that was without any friends or any presents, but this time with an actual party and actual…..doll friends? 😭 (I guess you could count Amanda so ya!)
Riley’s birthday was the key to accessing Rebecca’s…
Think about it, Riley had a birthday too, instead hers was her mourning the loss of presents and loneliness, Rebecca had lots of presents and friends, but she was mourning the curse of awareness and predictability, Both were mourning the feeling of being alone in something, opposite problem with the same feelings.
That’s why Riley was able to save Rebecca and none of the others could (even though I PREFERRED for Rebecca to be DEAD but whatever) Rebecca needed Someone to relate to, not someone who feared her or saw her as a monster, Kate had sympathy but she didn’t have the experience to have empathy, same with the other investigators, the reason why Riley was the key was not only because they had a shared tragic milestone, but also because they both related to each other in a emotional and spiritual way, at least that’s how I view it 😗
So yeah, this the theory I wanted to get off my chest for months straight, I wouldn’t sait’s basically outright confirmed but with all the evidence I layed out and also them referencing riley’s birthday cake again in the last game I think the devs definitely wanted people to notice this but kept it semi subtle,
So yeah I’m proud enough to say that this theory is SOFTLY/SUBTLY confirmed :3
I hope you enjoyed it!
