“Come on, Jason, what’s the harm?” Dakota gave him a smile that was anything but innocent, speaking in his usual know-it-all tone. Half reclining between the chair and the table in the school’s main study room, his friend was sipping Coca-Cola through a straw, which he had secretly filled into the three water bottles he had brought from home in the cafeteria. “You don't waste an opportunity to get free drinks!” he had said immediately afterwards, winking at him. “I mean, how long has it been? Three, four years?” he chuckled, exchanging a knowing look and a nod with Bobby, who was sitting next to him.
Jason snorted. “It’s only been two years, if you’re talking about Piper.” Besides, what else could he be talking about? Since the beginning of his senior year at Jupiter High, six months earlier, all his friends had been telling him to find a girlfriend, at least until they graduated. His protests and rather emphatic statements that he didn’t want a serious relationship, or even a less serious one, at least for the moment, had been useless. Was it really so essential for a high school boy to date someone?
“Whatever you say,” Dakota insisted, laughing louder and getting a shush from the girl at the table next to them, to whom he gave a not-too-explicit apology with his right hand. “But some of the guys at school have already started getting ready for prom; don’t you think you’d at least like to try going?”
“Admit it.” Hazel observed her for a few seconds with her big dark eyes, as she leaned forward to grab her backpack, knocked to the ground under the back seat of Reyna's off-road vehicle. “Reyna, you’re not fooling us. It’s useless.”
The girl studied her from her reflection into the rearview mirror. Then, she shifted her gaze on her own hands, resting composure on her own legs. They were sitting in the car in the school parking lot and, given New York’s icy winter weather and the the fact that they had got there so well in advance - oddly enough, there was no one in the street -, the three of them had decided to stay there a few more minutes, engine off and heating on. Only this time, however, Reyna had thought, otherwise the battery will drain and I will have to take the car to Mrs. Valdez.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” She knew exactly what she was talking about. They had discussed it all the way from home to school, repeatedly risking distracting Reyna from driving and, therefore, ending up on top of some light pole or some garbage can.
Her friend cast a thunderous glance at her, sticking her tongue out at her. “I might be only a freshman student, but I can recognize when a friend of mine has a crush, thank you. Nico, say something!” she jokingly complained, stretching her arm towards the passenger seat and giving her brother a pinch on his arm.
“Ow!” he exclaimed, caught off guard. “No, thank you,” he said, massaging the spot where Hazel had hit him with his other hand, “I’d rather not pry into these matters, especially if it’s Reyna.” He shrugged his shoulders, pretending to check that all the books and notebooks needed for that day were in his backpack. “I’d get a good lecture by her and I’d have to work hard to give her advice and support. And then, it’s Percy Jackson we’re talking about. If I’m being honest, I don’t like that guy. Reyna, you’d better get over this crush right now.”
also while i’m criticizing some fandom choices, i don’t ever wanna see someone say reyna didn’t look for jason!
maybe my memory is faulty but i swear i can recall reyna mentioning looking for him and still holding onto the resources to look for him, against the advice of octavian (and maybe the senate). she looked for him. but she was doing a two man job and when is she going to have time to look for him herself?
she can’t have extensive searches for him like chb did for percy because that’s not how camp jupiter/new rome is set up like. SHE HAS LIMITS. SHE IS TRYING TO OPERATE WITHIN THOSE LIMITS.
“but she hit on percy!” yeah and i don’t think that was smart whatsoever, especially when we already know she has lingering feelings for jason. my interpretation is that she’s just really fucking lonely and she knows percy is praetor material.
i’m dropping a quote from the book (son of neptune) here -
(percy) “you mean he’s been gone for eight months, and you haven’t replaced him?”
“he might not be dead,” hazel said, “we haven’t given up.”
reyna grimaced. percy got the feeling that this guy jason might’ve been more to her than just a colleague.
a lot of fan content of hazel with either nico or percy is written to reinforce their masculinity and heroism. typically nico, but sometimes percy, is written as the "man" of hazel's life, who guides, protects, and teaches her as a father. the actual books avoid this unless you count the nacho story as canon, but if you were only exposed to fanart where nico covers hazel's ears when someone curses or headcanons where percy teaches hazel how to do her hair or fanfic where nico teaches hazel what menstruation is, you might assume that hazel emerged from the womb approximately ten days prior, and would be surprised to discover that she’s independent, self-possessed, and has an above-average understanding of the metric system for a teen in the american education system.
i think that in the canon aspects of hazel's plots with leo and frank had some misogynistic writing. and i don't want fans to write frank as the "man" of hazel's life either like i can't emphasize how much i don't want that. i want fandom to divest from the concept entirely as far as hazel is concerned.

jason grace, golden son of rome, doted on and adored by the people of new rome, not trained hard at all because hes their little prince! he grows up kind, very much a golden retriever roman boy. spoiled, but ultra kind. praetor, but more ceremonial than anything. doesnt even need to worry about patricidal curses, because hos father doesnt see this kind, laid back boy as much of a threat. theyve never even met.
reyna avila ramirez areleno, girl who has been through so much. who arives at new rome and promises herself that she will never be helpless again. who pushes herself through the ranks and pushes herself to her limit, who closes herself off from the world because all that matters is staying safe and if you dont let yoursepf get attached they cant hurt you and kill you and make you suffer, she is tired of suffering (and someone elses hands. her own hands are fine) she earns her mothers favour and is walking on a tightrope to keep it, pushing herself to be the best daughter and the best fighter and finally getting to the top. shes lonely and tired and hungry and stressed and paranoid but shes at the top. shes safe, but still has to fight to keep that safety. and once she gets to the top, becomes praetor, has somehow even more work, she has to work with jason. who is everything shes not allowed to be. who is an actual nepo baby. she wants to hate him so badly. too bad hes so tooth rottingly kind.

sometimes, she sits at his grave. just sits. stares at the etched stone, that says he was a good leader, brother, friend. he was good, maybe too good.
too good for her.
but tonight, Reyna sits by his grave and her hand falls to the grass next to his headstone.
good friend.
not good enough.
her hand tightens on grass blades. may the gods curse you, Jason Grace.
“come back,” Reyna whispers. “come back.”
tears leak out of her eyes and fall onto the soil over his broken body. “come back. come back.”
she shifts to sit on her knees, pressing her forehead against dirt. she sinks her fingers into the ground, like she can unearth his body and cradle him one last time.
maybe she can heal him now, like she couldn’t before. maybe she can finally get him back.
“come back!” she screams. it tears out of her and it echoes with the fallen. it claws her throat hoarse and it makes her slam her head on the ground. “come back, come back, come back!”
sobs wrack her, and Reyna can feel the grass become wet with her grief. her body shakes.
a hand ghosts over her back and she looks up, her face messy with dirt. Jason looks at her with pain.
don’t, he says. don’t hurt.
“it hurts,” Reyna cries. “come back to me.”
i love you.
“if you loved me, you’d be here.”
i can’t.
“i’ll go to the underworld,” she says now, determination beginning to take control of her. she will have him back. she has no care for Death or Hades. they cannot stop her. “i’ll find your soul, Jason, i’ll bring you back.”
don’t, Jason tells her. let me be at peace.
“no,” she pleads. she wants to reach for him, but she knows he’ll disappear.
i must go. Hades only allowed for a moment.
“no. no, no, you can’t go. Jason, you can’t.”
his spirit vanishes.
Reyna slams her fist on the ground. “damn you!” she looks up at the sky. “why wouldn’t you save him, Jupiter? you saved Thalia, why wouldn’t you save him? i’ll kill you. i’ll be the first to kill a god.”
lightning strikes a few feet away from her. she is not afraid. “you can’t frighten me. i’ll kill you, Jupiter, i swear it, i will-”
lightning strikes and her soul can only now be at peace.
her soul floats to the underworld and her heart meets her at its gates.
